Brighton manager Graham Potter, speaking to Sky Sports: "The first goal was a mistake but then our response was really good.

"The second goal was a bit of a blow and it's those fine margins that against the big teams you need to turn in your favour. We're happy with lots of things but disappointed with the resilt and three goals against. Maybe we need to learn when to be a bit more compact as a team.

"It was a spirited performance and one with personality from my team and we competed against a top-four team."

On injuries to Adam Lallana and Ben White: "We'll have to wait. Hopefully they are not too bad but it's too early for me to say anything."

On Tariq Lamptey: "He's fun to watch isn't he? Tariq has such energy, such personalty and enthusiasm for the game. He's still young. His approach to football is refreshing."

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard, speaking to BBC Sport: "To come to Brighton and win is a tough ask. We've only had a few days so I didn't expect to see the kind of football we want to play. We had to do some of the more difficult things - resilience, throwing yourself in front of the ball, so I'm pleased.

"We've had a lot of quarantines, a lot of players who aren't match fit. That's how this season has started. There's a lot of strain on these players and hopefully wer'll get better and better."

On debutants Timo Werner and Kai Havertz: "Timo's speed to win the penalty showed he is sharp and he was a threat all night. He is very mobile and I liked his performance.

"With Kai we saw a lot as well. To get these minutes will only be good and both of them will be huge players for this club."

On Reece James' goal: "What pleased me most was the position Reece ended up in. You rely on quality players to produce big moments."

Timo Werner has a big ice pack strapped to his thigh but he'll be OK. He says he picked up the whack while winning the penalty.

  5. 'We more than matched Chelsea'published at 22:45 British Summer Time 14 September 2020

    Brighton 1-3 Chelsea

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton manager Graham Potter to BBC Sport: "The performance was good in many aspects, we more than matched Chelsea for long periods. I'm disappointed with the opening goal, but errors can happen.

"We were heavily punished with a wonder strike and ultimately if you concede three times it's hard to win football matches.

"You have moments against the big teams that you need to have go your way and we need to learn from that. But there are positives.

"Adam Lallana was enjoying the game, he brings that personality, we are pleased with what he has brought to us and we just have to help him get on the field more often."

Chelsea's Timo Werner, speaking to MOTD: "It was a hard game after 1-1 but then Reece scored an amazing goal. We are very happy that we win today."

On difference to playing in Germany: "The game is totally different. There is more space but when you come out in the second half and the game was totally different and changed completely. Brighton gave us a lot of problems.

"I played against three massive defenders, you don't have that in Germany. Happy to be here and I think it was a good first game for me and the team.

"Brighton did very well from the beginning and pressed us high. The second game will become harder because it is Liverpool. I tried and did my best and got an assist for the team.

"We had a lot of players not in the rhythm now but I think we will get better and better when we play more games together."

  7. 'A learning curve for us'published at 22:33 British Summer Time 14 September 2020

    Brighton 1-3 Chelsea

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton's Lewis Dunk, speaking to Sky Sports: "The three goals were disappointing. I think we played some good stuff at times.

"When you think you are back in the game is the time when you have to be more concentrated. It is a learning curve for us. It was disappointing to concede that quickly.

"Don't ask me. I don't know how I missed my chance. I was four yards out and put it wide. I have got to score.

"I think there were loads of positive. Our play at times was very good. I thought Ben White was excellent tonight alongside me. It was his first taste of the Premier League and I thought he did very well."

More from Frank Lampard on Sky Sports: "I liked Kai Havertz. It's not a game where you come away with some vintage moments and there's a lot on his shoulders but you saw glimpses of what he can do. Everything I have seen from him is spot on and his quality will come through. He's hugely talented.

"I loved the way that Timo Werner pops up in different areas, he has a hunger to score goals and be ruthless.

"We definitely want to close that gap to Liverpool, we have to have intentions to be up there even though it is a big ask to win it. We are behind, it's step by step. Hopefully we can make big strides.

"I am happy with Kepa, I saw confidence in him, he is here, he is our keeper and I am happy with him."

  9. 'We were OK'published at 22:28 British Summer Time 14 September 2020

    Brighton 1-3 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard to Sky Sports: "Reece James' goal, it had me off my seat and we needed it, we weren't at our best in that period. Reece has got that in him, he is a player of such quality. You try and get him in areas where he can be a threat.

"I thought we were OK. I liked the work ethic. If you analyse the fact that we've been together as a team for four days, to expect everything to click on day one is difficult. We showed determination and that is a game we might have dropped points in last year.

"I don't want to pin us down to one system. We have three or four players who want to play as a 10 for us but I want us to be adaptable. We have a lot of attacking players, I want us to be fluid, I want that movement.

"We weren't as fluid as we can be today but we will work on that."

    Brighton 1-3 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea's Reece James, speaking to Sky Sports: "We knew it was going to be tough coming here and we knew we would have to put in everything to get the three points and I think we did that. We had to push up a gear.

"As the games go on we are only going to get stronger. There are new players in the team so we have to gel and get stronger week by week.

"When you bring in high level players it brings the competition up and makes everyone work harder to get into the team."

On Chelsea's new signings: "They are great players and big names so good additions to the team. They will help us move forward.

"It's going to put pressure on everyone and make everybody lift their game. There's more competition in the team and better players so that will help us a lot.

"The aim in football is always to win. Luckily we got off to a good start so hopefully we can keep on improving."
