Obviously no fans at Old Trafford today but Sir Alex Ferguson is watching.

The former Manchester United manager is sat in the directors' box.

Amazing to think Ferguson is only five years older than Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson.

I think I know who is having the better day so far.

Andros Townsend is loving life right now and he fires a shot wide from about 25 yards.

He was again given the ball by Jeffrey Schlupp, who had a trial with Manchester United in 2013.

Ash Williams: Harry Maguire casually jogging back. No urgent desire to try and live up to his price tag.

Simon Turner: That Palace lead comes courtesy of a much sharper start than United who look sluggish and dopey. Game on!

Thomas Knights: United look like what they are, a team who have been completely screwed over by having no pre-season and players who have barely got back from covid isolations. The schedules for City and United are just plain unfair

OK maybe we are going to get a few goals in this one too.

How can United respond? David de Gea, who did get a touch to Andros Townsend's shot without keeping it out, is trying to get a move going from the back.

    Andros Townsend

Andros Townsend has given Crystal Palace the lead at Old Trafford. Jeffrey Schlupp is allowed too much time in United's box and he squares it to the back post.

It must go past about four United defenders, before finding Townsend who nets with his weaker right foot from close range.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has presented Bruno Fernandes with his Manchester United player of the year award.

It is a quite remarkable achievement for the Portugal midfielder.

He only arrived at the end of January.

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson to Sky Sports: "Wilfried Zaha is a forward, either a wide one or a centre forward.

"We don’t nail his feet to the central part of the pitch – he can go wide if that’s what he wants to do. I don’t think we’re asking a lot different playing in a front two or three."

  19. Man Utd hope fans can return soonpublished at 17:22 British Summer Time 19 September 2020

Man Utd v Crystal Palace (17:30 BST)

    Manchester United

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward says the club are behind calls for fans to return to matches ‘as soon as possible’.

Although pilots involving EFL and National League clubs are taking place, Premier League clubs have opted out, stating the current 1,000 limit on capacities is pointless for them.

Writing in today’s match programme, Woodward feels having fans back at Old Trafford is possible.

“We are working tirelessly to prepare for the return of fans once the government gives us the green light and we are advocating for that to happen as soon as possible,” he said.

“We must all respect the need for caution in light of the continued threat posed by COVID-19 and nothing is more important than public health.

“Nevertheless, we do believe it will be possible to welcome fans back to Old Trafford safely, initially with a reduced capacity and a variety of other measure in place to reduce risks.”

In his programme notes today, Manchester United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward pointed out the economic pressures created by the coronavirus pandemic.

This is not what many United fans want to hear after a long drawn-out pursuit of Jadon Sancho, which is no nearer reaching a successful conclusion.

The latest speculation has been around Porto's Brazilian defender Alex Telles.

I have been told there have been discussions over Telles but they are not as advanced as some of the reports have indicated.
