  3. 'It is not an excuse for the result...'published at 19:07 British Summer Time 13 September 2020

    Tottenham 0-1 Everton

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho on Sky Sports: "I'm disappointed with the performance, yes. After the goal Everton dominate the game and were dangerous in counters too

"Taking Dele Alli off was tactical. Allan was in that position and Gomes and Docoure were pressing high with lots of space in those areas. I needed more there.

"The struggle starts in the way we didn't press. Our pressure up was very poor - I'd say it was lazy pressure. When you have lazy pressure they build from the back.

"When you let them play from the back they are comfortable to have the ball. I repeat in the first half we had some good chances.

"The goal was a bit strange. It is not an excuse for the result or defeat or performance - with so many referees on the pitch and on the line, to take a kick a minimum of five metres distance (away from where the foul was) is incredible. Before the goal I was saying to the referees - five metres makes a huge difference to the position of our back line and the angle of the cross."

Should your players have spoken to the referee before the free-kick was taken? "We have meetings even now on Zoom asking the players not to complain to officials. The referee is there, the guys in VAR are in contact with him, Graham Scott the fourth official is there.

"I will be honest with the players, saying things I cannot say to you. But I can say to them keep working and not much time to think because on Thursday we have a knockout game (in the Europa League) so there is not much time to cry or complain."

  5. 'That was poor from Jose and his team were rotten'published at 19:02 British Summer Time 13 September 2020

    Everton 0-1 Tottenham

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Absolute nonsense from Jose Mourinho to come out and attack Rob Nothman like that. I don't know what game Jose was watching and his side were lacklustre and lethargic.

Is that the type of football Spurs fans want to see? And then to come out with excuses, excuses, excuses.

That was poor from Jose and his team were rotten. He has to carry the can for that.

  6. 'Your analysis is not good enough'published at 19:02 British Summer Time 13 September 2020

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live's Rob Nothman: "There is always the first time in football, this is the first time that I lost the first game of a season, a new experience for me bit I have to cope with it.

"Did you see the first half or only the second half? That is why Jordan Pickford made two top saves in the first half and Hugo Lloris did not touch the ball.

"What is possession? Goal, goals, goals. And shots. We were poor, not good enough at all but you also are not good enough in your analysis.

"They scored the goal in the second half and we were poor in creating chances and were not aggressive enough. In attack we looked tired, lots of players did not look sharp and we lacked intensity, sharpness and creativity. After the goal they were the best team.

"You stay with the possession in the first half, I will stay with the two amazing saves from Pickford.

"There are players without pre-season, how many times has Harry Kane trained with the team? Just once.

"Of course we will get better."

  8. 'We showed what we can do'published at 18:55 British Summer Time 13 September 2020

    Tottenham 0-1 Everton

    Everton

Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti to BBC Sport: "This performance gives us more confidence for the future. We showed what we can do. For the players it was important to show what they can do.

"It's not easy for everyone to prepare for the start of the season. There was not a lot of time. The new signings had one week of training.

"[The new players] adapted really well. The performance was good.

"James Rodriguez brings his ability to control the ball, to do the right passes, to keep the team comfortable with the ball.

"This was important. But it's only the first match of the season. We have to see what is going on. I think we can compete with this squad in all the competitions.

"We have to fight to reach Europe. The work we have to do is quite clear."

Ed Mackrill: There’s only one problem at Spurs - Mourinho.

Chris: there was an English centre forward today that played like an international centre-forward. He was wearing a blue jersey not a white one

Andrew Humprhey: Please under @MrAncelotti, external can Everton performances now be that; that's Everton, that.

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti: "It was good, the game was what I expected from the team. It was not easy but we had energy, quality. The performance was brilliant. We had difficulties at the beginning but we were comfortable on the pitch.

"The players that can play football, they don't need a lot of time to adapt. James knows what he has to do, Allan and Doucoure the same. I just said show your quality and they did. We had a good combination in middfield. Last season we had players with quality on the ball but you also have to play without the ball.

"James is not the fastest player in the world but he has a lot of quality. We have to use him to show his quality. He is not a winger, but he can come inside and receive the ball, he is very dangerous. I am not worried about the physicality. If I was worried about that I would sign Usain Bolt, not James.

"After a long time of suffering now the fans have to be happy. It was not easy in the past to win here and we won, it's good to celebrate.

"We need continuity. Last season we were up and down and now we will see. This game tells us we can compete with anyone."

  12. 'Lazy pressing, bad fitness, wrong state of mind'published at 18:48 British Summer Time 13 September 2020

    Tottenham 0-1 Everton

    Tottenham Hotspur

    Jose MourinhoImage source, Getty Images

Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho to BBC Sport: "What happened after the goal with them having more chances is a consequence of conceding the goal and not such good fitness condition from some players.

"What happened before the goal was a good game. We had two incredible situations and two good saves from Jordan Pickford. We didn't score. The game was open.

"In the second half one goal made a difference in the result and what happened after the goal.

"Against good teams like Everton if you let them play from the back they are comfortable with very good technical players. If you don't press them you give them ammunition.

"We were lazy in our pressing. That is a consequence of bad fitness, bad pre-season. Some players didn't even have a pre-season. Some players had a wrong state of mind. I don't want to speak about it - I'm not sure about it.

"It was too easy for them to play from back to front.

"Technically it was not so easy because some players didn't have a pre-season for different reasons. We had two days with everybody. Two days before the game is not where you can work too much.

"The goal shouldn't be possible when you have six referees and VAR - to let a free-kick be taken five or six metres in front because it's a huge difference.

"I'm disappointed with my team. My message is inside [the dressing room]. I'm so happy no more Amazon because these things can stay in between us."

    Tottenham 0-1 Eveton

    Everton

    Dominic Calvert-LewinImage source, Getty Images

Everton goalscorer Dominic Calvert-Lewin to BBC Sport: "A very good start. We were looking to start well and build with a strong tempo.

"Scoring is what I'm here to do. When you score and get the three points I'm happy.

"We've not long played together (with the new signings) so there's more to come."

On coach and former Everton striker Duncan Ferguson: "He's been someone I can bounce questions off. He has my best interests at heart. I have a lot to thank him for and if I need to ask him things he's always there.

"You look at the quality that's come in, it's an instant uplift. As a centre forward you look at the creativity - they've played at the top level. There should be chances this season and I need to be there.

"It was most important to get momentum today. We wanted to make a statement. It's important we don't get carried away, it's something to build on."

Zero passion, even less creativity and no tactics. Don't think I can watch any more of a Mourinho managed Spurs team. We don't even lose playing good fooball anymore!

    Mark, Wales

In Allan we have finally replaced Gueye, Rodriguez looks class and Doucoure is class. DCL has got more energy than the energiser bunny and Pickford looks like a man with a point to prove

    Happy Everton fan

Tottenham are dead. Absolutely, stone cold, dead as a club. No plan. No passion. No purpose. They need 11 new signings, but they cannot afford or are unwilling to buy even a back up striker. Yesterday's men.

  17. 'Everton fans will be buzzing'published at 18:30 British Summer Time 13 September 2020

    Tottenham 0-1 Everton

    Karen Carney
Former England and Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

I am excited to see Everton again, that was only their first game.

The fluidity of the midfield, interchanging and they all bring that difference to the team.

It is incredible how they have gelled in such a short space of time. If I was an Everton fan, I would be buzzing to see this team progressing.

The other players now look quality, because if you bring in good players they need to raise their levels.

You would think that midfield played together for the last five or six seasons, it was a joy to watch them today.

I love Harry Kane when he is on form but he is not right at the moment, is it best to let him train and get him fit? Kane cannot press like he used to so it affects everything.

Jose Mourinho is then on the touchline, chopping and changing it but it is just not working. Kane only had two touches in the opposition box, that is just not good enough.
