    Everton 3-1 Brighton

Everton could do without another injury and especially to their star man as Dominic Calvert-Lewin is caught late by Steven Alzate. Calvert-Lewin is hobbling but looks like he should be able to run it off.

Chris Lambo: Remember back in December last year when Ancelotti got the job and said he will be taking Everton to the Champions League and everyone laughed...who’s laughing now?

Oliver Camp: Pickford is such a strange keeper. Like Hart, he's weirdly intense - and that seems to cause his mistakes. Why did he jump to catch the ball before the Maupay goal? Why did he launch himself into Mina like that? Calm down!

    Everton 3-1 Brighton

Good spell of possession for Brighton at the moment and a goal for the visitors would certainly make things interesting in the closing stages.

Chikere Asogwa: Why are Brighton so intent on playing out from the back this season, seeing as it's clearly one of the reasons they concede sloppy goals? Surely a coaching thing?

Jenade Sharma: When they defend like this Brighton really seem like Dunk ‘n’ doughnuts at the back. Sorry.

  5. Postpublished at 60 mins

    Everton 3-1 Brighton

Lovely play by Brighton on the left as Solly March plays a one-two with Neal Maupay and his cross deflects just wide of the far post and out for a Brighton corner.

  6. 'Doucoure fantastic'published at 16:18 British Summer Time 3 October 2020

    Everton 3-1 Brighton

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea and Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

I have to say Abdoulaye Doucoure is breaking down everything in that midfield. He's been absolutely fantastic. He is having one of those games where you do question 'are you playing as a defensive midfielder? Attacking midfielder?' And actually, he's doing both!

  7. Everton 'so exciting going forward'published at 16:17 British Summer Time 3 October 2020

    Everton 3-1 Brighton

    Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on Final Score

The stagnant, boring team of last season is forgotten. They look so exciting going forward. They trust each other to make the crucial pass. They steal the ball because of the high press. It’s great play from Calvert-Lewin who passes it to Iwobi, and it’s a great ball to Rodriguez.

They’re playing full of confidence at the moment. They’re winning games and scoring goals, and despite mistakes at the other end they believe they can win the game.

  8. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 58 mins

    Everton 3-1 Brighton

A second enforced change for Everton as Seamus Coleman appears to have picked up a knock. He is replaced by Fabian Delph.

  9. Postpublished at 55 mins

    Everton 3-1 Brighton

Aaron Connolly does well to hold off Seamus Coleman and get to a long ball forward for Brighton. He holds the ball up and crosses but he doesn't have a team-mate in the box.

  10. 'The game was so open'published at 16:14 British Summer Time 3 October 2020

    Everton 3-1 Brighton

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea and Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

I said there would be more goals! It was just so open. Once again Everton, the pace in which they broke. Well done Iwobi there. Brighton were caught again trying to play things from the back. James was never going to miss that with his left foot and technique.

  11. goal

GOAL - Everton 3-1 Brightonpublished at 52 mins

    James Rodriguez

A second of the season for super James Rodriguez!

Leandro Trossard loses the ball, Dominic Calvert-Lewin passes to Alex Iwobi wide left and the substitute crosses to the far post where the unmarked Rodriguez fires home.

Lovely play. Everton are really looking the business.

Declan Bee: Really impressed by Everton and that's from a Liverpool fan. DCL on fire and defenders like Keane and Coleman really exceeding expectations.

Dean Woodward: Aren't Everton being massively overhyped, considering they've played probably the easiest first 3-4 games of the season compared to the other top 6-7 teams?

  13. Postpublished at 50 mins

    Everton 2-1 Brighton

Dominic Calvert-Lewin tries to flick a pass around his marker but the ball comes across at too much pace and he can only flick it out of play. Right idea, though.

I quite like the fact that Everton's opponents at Goodison have to get changed in a porta cabin and then run through the rain into the stadium for the second half. Grounded.

    Everton 2-1 Brighton

Those people who are in Jordan Pickford's corner will have a really hard time defending that mistake. It was a really, really bad error.

Furbs: Utd fans wanting DCL not Sancho. You can’t afford him!

Craig Bickerton: Chris .. why on earth would DCL want to leave the team at the top of the league to go to United?

Rishabh Kapoor: James Rodriguez is up there as early names for bargain/signing of the season. Galvanised the entire team.

Simeon: Anyone who knows anything about Brighton will know that was inevitable: Last minute before half-time - check. Set piece from a dangerous area - check. Always was going to be a goal to Everton. So predictable.

  19. 'Total confidence' in Pickford?published at 16:02 British Summer Time 3 October 2020

    Everton 2-1 Brighton

    Alistair Magowan
    BBC Sport at Goodison Park

If Everton have designs on Europe and maybe even the Champions League in coming seasons, as the club and Carlo Ancelotti have said, then they need to look at their goalkeeping options.

Eight days ago, the Everton boss said he had "total confidence" in Jordan Pickford, but these mistakes are becoming far too common.
