Something for Edouard Mendy to do! It's not the most taxing of jobs as he catches a routine ball into the box, but it was at least something to warm his gloves.

There are signs that Palace are becoming a bit more adventurous, though.

jjparle: Re Dan 13:37. Imagine thinking Chelsea need any more talent going forward. Ridiculous take. Lampard can’t even play half of them in their proper positions. You need defenders. You did all last season, didn’t fix it, and will suffer because of it.

Almost an assist to add to his goal for Ben Chilwell as he whips in a superb corner, Kurt Zouma rises unchallenged but heads wide. Should have been on target.

Wilfried Zaha had the joint fewest touches in the first half with eight - same as Chelsea's keeper Edouard Mendy. Palace will need him to be less isolated if they are going to get back into this but its not really happened for him yet.

Amol Raval: Palace deserve to be behind. No ambition going forward and just sit back till a counter opportunity comes. The negative play will be Palace's downfall this season. They make games unpleasant to watch for a neutral.

Nii: Scrappy goal. Yes, but we will take it.

The game certainly needed that goal and it will be interesting to see what Crystal Palace's response will be. They do win a corner off the goalscorer Ben Chilwell but it is headed away.

First slip up for Palace at the back. Ball broke loose and became anyone's and Ben Chilwell absolutely slams it past Vicente Guaita. Debut goal.

    Debut goal!

A rare moment of poor defending by Crystal Palace as Mamadou Sakho nods on a deflected cross and Ben Chilwell steams in at the far post to drive home the opener.

A creative midfielder, a proper striker and an experienced defender who hasn’t come for the money and Chelsea can think about a serious title challenge. This is just dour.

    Dan, London

Fans should be glad they can't go to games. Yawn.

    And still Chelsea's players wait.

The two teams have not quite synced up their arrival times onto the pitch at the start of both halves.

  15. 'Chelsea can't recoup Kepa fee'published at 13:33 British Summer Time 3 October 2020

    Rob Green
Former West Ham and England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

I don't think Kepa Arrizabalaga can leave Chelsea because of the money that has been spent. They can't recoup anywhere close to what they have spent on him. Not even 50%. Chelsea are not in the business at selling players at a huge loss, so it'll be an interesting one.

I know they want to keep him, I know they want it to be a "competition" but I think Edouard Mendy will play as many games as they want him to. In the scenario and climate football is in - the loss of revenue for all clubs - they are just not going to recoup that loss Kepa would bring.

Henry Emerenini: It will be a complete disaster if we lose this game. Questions must be asked of Lamps.

Alan Curr: Some crazy comments from Liz & Willem. Chelsea had the worst defence in the top half last season. We need to stop conceding and with the players we have we’ll get goals.

David Hayter: Chelsea need to get Giroud on. Lampard left him on the bench last season until January. Then he used him and we started scoring.

  17. 'Palace have frustrated Chelsea'published at 13:31 British Summer Time 3 October 2020

    Chelsea 0-0 Crystal Palace

    Alistair Bruce-Ball
    BBC Radio 5 live commentator

Not a first-half that will live long in the memory. Fair to say Crystal Palace have frustrated Chelsea in the main. Palace are one of the most well-organised teams in the Premier League playing against a team that has yet to click, so that half was pretty predictable.

Noel Fitzpatrick: For all the much hyped spending on attackers by the home side, Palace are blunting them very easily.

Kev: Is Phillip suggesting there’s a conspiracy against Everton? That’s the biggest reach I’ve seen all season.

Kaustubh Joshi: I know he is still young but every time I see Hudson-Odoi in possession of the ball he does end up making bad choices or losing it. Doesn’t look like a player Bayern shall be sweating for.
