Northern Ireland have the strongest back four they could have and it's important Jonny Evans is back. He's a big player and a big influence on the team. The surprise package in the selection is maybe Niall McGinn, who is having his first start in 10 games, but has loads of experience at this level. I hope McGinn starts on the left, George Saville in central midfield and Corry Evans on the right. Saville clearly wasn't comfortable on the left side of a front three in the last two games.

The Football Association of Ireland has said that a second member of the Republic team's backroom staff has tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of tonight's game in Bratislava. The FAI employee tested negative in Dublin on Tuesday morning but a positive result came from a test in Bratislava on Wednesday and the Irish football governing body said "he is asymptomatic and is feeling well".

On Tuesday, it was announced that another member of the backroom staff had tested positive for coronavirus.

Interesting to note that Aaron Connolly and Adam Idah have now dropped out of the Republic of Ireland substitutes.

In his pre-match interview on television, Stephen Kenny has not elaborated on why.

Brighton striker Connolly did have to miss training earlier this week but Kenny did say that James McClean's inclusion was a "late decision".

Word also came through half an hour ago that a second member of the Republic's backroom staff has tested positive for Covid-19 following a previous case on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old Inter Milan player is self-isolating in accordance with Uefa protocol.

Slovakia were already without Napoli midfielder Stanislav Lobotka after the Serie A side's entire squad was quarantined following positive tests for two players and a member of staff.

Legendary goalkeeper Pat Jennings says he is delighted for Steven Davis as the Northern Ireland captain surpasses his caps record.

Jennings made 119 appearances for NI but Davis has done one better in Thursday's Euro 2020 play-off semi-final against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

"I've texted Steven to congratulate him on the record and wish him well for the big game," said Jennings.

"I'm happy for him - records are there to be broken and I've no regrets."

Captain Steven Davis earns his 120th cap for Northern Ireland tonight, surpassing the record previously held by goalkeeper Pat Jennings.

Slovakia v Republic of Ireland (19:45 BST)

Republic of Ireland starting XIImage source, BBC Sport

James McClean's inclusion is the main talking point from Stephen Kenny's Republic of Ireland selection.

The Stoke City winger is included instead of Brighton's Aaron Connolly in a side which has an entirely changed midfield and attack from the Nations League defeat by Finland.

Jeff Hendrick, James McCarthy and Conor Hourihane replace injured Harry Arter, Jayson Molumby and Robbie Brady in midfield.

In attack, if indeed, it is the expected front-three formation, McClean, David McGoldrick and Callum Robinson, take over from Connolly, Adam Idah and Callum O'Dowda.

Covid-19 issues rule out Inter Milan centre-back Milan Skriniar and Napoli midfielder Stanislav Lobotka for the home side who will rely heavily on star midfielders Marek Hamsik and Juraj Kucka.

With Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka still ruled out by injury, Fulham goalkeeper Marek Rodak remains in the side after playing in the draw in Israel last month.

Slovakia XI: Rodak, Pekarik, Vavro, Valjent, Mazan, Kucka, Hrosovsky, Hamsik, Rusnak, Duda, Mihalik.

Subs: Bero, Schranz, Koscelnik, Pauschek, Haraslin, Gregus, Gyomber, Bozenik, Mak, Kuciak, Greif.

Republic of Ireland XI: Randolph, Doherty, Duffy, Egan, Stevens; Hendrick, McCarthy, Hourihane; Robinson, McGoldrick, McClean.

Subs: Kelleher, Molumby, Idah, Byrne, Brady, Williams, Connolly, Long, O'Dowda, Travers, Browne.

  19. Team news - Magennis in for Washington up frontpublished at 18:58 British Summer Time 8 October 2020

    Bosnia-Herzegovina v Northern Ireland (19:45 BST)

    NI

In terms of personnel, the two big decisions that Northern Ireland boss Ian Baraclough has made are to play Josh Magennis as the lone striker and Niall McGinn wide right.

Magennis started Baraclough's first match on the right wing before getting sent off, with Conor Washington playing up front in both of the Nations League games.

Aberdeen's McGinn is vastly experienced in international football and rarely lets his country down, but this is the first time Baraclough has started him.

Again, it looks like a 4-2-3-1 formation with Paddy McNair in behind Magennis and Saville to the left, with Corry Evans anchoring midfield with captain Steven Davis, who will be breaking NI's appearance record on his 120th cap.

Jonny Evans, as expected, returns to a back four that has the versatile Stuart Dallas at right back.

NI XI: Peacock-Farrell, Dallas, Cathcart, J Evans, Lewis, Davis, C Evans, McGinn, McNair, Saville, Magennis.

  20. How do the play-offs work?published at 18:54 British Summer Time 8 October 2020

The 16 teams are in four different paths, mostly based on which Nations League tier they were in.

However with all bar one of the Tier A sides qualifying automatically - Iceland - three teams from Tier C were drawn at random to take part in those play-offs alongside them.

The winner of each semi-final will go on to play in the finals, also one-legged, during the next international break against the winner of the other game in their path.

The winners of that game go to Euro 2020.
