  2. 'A good exercise without it being an amazing performance'published at 19:02 British Summer Time 11 October 2020

    England 2-1 Belgium

    Rob Green
Former West Ham and England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Playing against Belgium twice is a great challenge for this side and the way they want to develop, if you put yourself in that position more and more, you will rely on these moments in the bigger moments in your career and in the team's development.

Gareth will say 'we know how to beat this team, when we don't play that well, so imagine what could happen if we play well'. They will rely on this experience. It's been a really good exercise without it being an amazing performance.

Kris Jefferson: I’m so confused as to how England won that. It never felt they were actually playing that great, and had luck on their side (with both goals and Belgium misses). But still, hasn’t exactly reassured me about England’s competitiveness come a serious competition.

Kyle Utterson: England fans should stop with the constant criticism of Southgate. He played a more defensive formation because he wanted us to be stronger at the back and not overrun in midfield. It worked a treat he has learnt from past matches.

  4. 'The fact England can beat the number one side is outstanding'published at 19:01 British Summer Time 11 October 2020

It's not a performance where you'll go home and be excited.

Nobody was sparkling. Kyle Walker was England's best player, making vital interceptions and reading the game. I thought he was fantastic.

But, you're looking at a performance that was against the number one side in the world. The fact that they won is outstanding.

Inflicting Belgium's first defeat in 2 years is no small achievement - regardless of how it was achieved. We should also bear in mind that England still have another game this week so it wouldn't surprise me to see another 5-6 changes for Denmark.

  6. 'England found a way to win'published at 18:56 British Summer Time 11 October 2020

    England 2-1 Belgium

    Rob Green
Former West Ham and England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

England found a way. It wasn't the most fluent or electric performance but they found a way to win the game. Once they got in front, unlike Belgium, they looked solid.

There was questions about the defensive three, and the goalkeeper, and it looks like they've been untested but that's the sign of a good defence.

Mason Mount now has as many England goals as Rio Ferdinand, Paul Ince, Gareth Barry and indeed, Gareth Southgate (2).

Thoughts? An odd game that - England have come from behind to beat the #1 team in the world but it wasn't really scintillating stuff was it?

A good, solid, professional win though.

Kyle Utterson: England have played this 2nd half superbly. A lot of fans should just wait before jumping to hammer the team the manager and the selection. Plus we have won this game without Sancho, Chilwell, Sterling and Kane in the starting 11. The future is bright.

Without Courtois, both Hazards, Vertonghen or Mertens - have you really beaten the #1 ranked Belgium team?

FOUR minutes added on. The questions over England's setup and selection may roll on but if this was the World Cup quarter-final you'd take this wouldn't you, England fans?

If Belgium are the top ranked team in the world then I'm the world's best tennis player. The match has been dross.

Clever from Harry Kane, just gets across his defender and waits for the contact to buy a free-kick. Roberto Martinez as angry as he can get.

There are guys on the bench that I feel sorry for especially Grealish and Ings are their performances against Wales but no one has put a foot wrong! There is great competition in this squad!

ReindeerHotdog: Still don't think Southgate got his starting XI right today but if England can see this out it's an impressive result. Belgium have been wasteful their chances but have been in charge for most of the game. Against more clinical sides we'd have been swept aside today

  20. CLOSE!published at 85 mins

    England 2-1 Belgium

Almost a brilliant goal! Declan Rice carries it forwards through midfield, plays a one-two with Marcus Rashford and then sends it back to Rashford. He drives across the area, beats a last man and then fires over the top!

That really would have been something.
