It's the two wing backs linking up. Kieran Trippier made the simple, but right choice.
Everybody knows what Mason Mount wants to do but the deflection loops agonisingly over the keeper. Sometimes as a keeper you've just got to accept your lot.
England are finding answers without playing particularly well.
Mason Mount (64 mins)
What was that you were all saying?!
England somehow lead this game and it's a proper fluke of a goal. Good play though as the two wing-backs combine, Trent Alexander-Arnold whips in a cross and Kieran Trippier nods it down and back to Mason Mount on the left of the area.
He shoots, but it takes a freakish deflection off the toe of Toby Alderweireld, spooning up really high, over Simon Mignolet's head and then dropping into the far corner.

If you are Belgium, would you rather play against Henderson, Rice and Mount, or one of Rice or Henderson plus Grealish and Sancho?

Who is most likely to scare the Belgium defence? I will give you a clue. His name begins with G and ends in realish (and goals)

Southgate's decisions are baffling me tbh, but, who would all these people calling for his head replace him with??!

Good play from Kyle Walker to step in and clear from in front of the waiting Romelu Lukaku.
Oh - Harry Kane is taking his top off as well...

Gary Lane: Southgate is keeping the seat warm for Lamps or Gerrard to come in after we spectacularly crash out somewhere...but let's hope not.
England ARE readying a sub.
It IS another defensive midfielder.

Comparing this game to a premier league game. Belgium like Spurs good players but no tournament wins. England like Burnley not much creativity and rely on set pieces.

England break away with purpose, Marcus Rashford flies down the left to clip in a cross which Dominic Calvert-Lewin ends up miskicking.

Rob: Too much respect for Belgium. Fine, park the bus. But at least put your best forwards on the pitch. Triple substitution please. Grealish, Sancho and Kane. Dier off, back to 4-4-2. Oh and try to win, not avoid losing
England 1-1 Belgium
Despite England having no real natural balance on the left, with the right-footed Kieran Trippier at left-wing back, they are doing the majority of their attacking down that side of the pitch.
England 1-1 Belgium
Roberto Martinez isn't happy at a robust challenge on Romelu Lukaku who's left holding the small of his back. I think it was more the landing to be honest.
Declan Rice is the man who slid in on him, already on a booking, and unsurpisingly he's left limping away as well.

I really like Mason Mount. Great player with plenty to offer, but nowhere near as dangerous as Grealish.

Well played Timothy Castagne - the Leicester man nutmegs Trent Alexander-Arnold but Kyle Walker is there to hammer clear.
Every time you beat a right-back in this England team there's another one there to sweep up.

Rakesh Pradhan: Gareth Southgate is still living off a World Cup semi final . He is bang average and his team are reflecting that... Slow ponderous and cautious. Poor selection and he is going to waste a golden generation of ballers

England looked confident on the ball then. It slowed down at times but when they did play with pace they found Kieran Trippier and he found a team-mate. It didn't really come off but just keeping that ball and getting a foothold in the game, and the way games are going without crowds you can really control it.
England 1-1 Belgium
Much better - Kyle Walker steps up from that back three for the first time and it opens up a gap somewhere else, Mason Mount then runs into space and wins another corner.

Problem with form vs reputation is what if you change the team every international to make sure form players are playing. It would likely be even more disjointed. We always say the best international teams play like club sides. Probably because they play with each other all the time. Form is important but has to be balanced with players you trust within the system you're playing.
