    England 1-1 Belgium

England seeing plenty of the ball in the second half but it's very much of the sideways and slow type. They do get it forwards then and Trent Alexander-Arnold sees a ball ping across goal and away for a corner.

Is there any evidence that Southgate has learnt any lessons from the two defeats against Belgium in the World Cup? No. Tactically, Southgate is not able to match the top teams.

DCL wins a header and England are suddenly three on three. They don't make enough of it as Marcus Rashford goes up a bit of a cul-de-sac on the left and it all breaks down.

Here come England, Marcus Rashford down the left but Jordan Henderson stops making a supporting run and it breaks down.

Belgium did have seven shots on goal in that first half but Jordan Pickford was only called upon to make one save.

Kyle Utterson: Belgium are the better side but they never went for it as much as they should have done when 1 up. They had few chances despite dominating the ball. England can still win this 1 hopefully we see Kane, Sancho and Grealish in the 2nd half. Game on now though

Harry Kane has been directly involved in 10 goals in his last five home matches for England (nine goals & one assist), scoring two hat-tricks in this run – against Bulgaria in September 2019 and Montenegro in November 2019, in what was his most recent home game; the only previous player to score a hat-trick in consecutive home appearances for England was Tommy Taylor between 1956 and 1957 versus Denmark and the Republic of Ireland.

I think it's time for Jack Grealish, we don't really offer any threat with the ball. Marcus Rashford looks lively but there hasn't been much from Mason Mount and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

  15. England lucky to be levelpublished at 17:52 British Summer Time 11 October 2020

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Wembley

Belgium much the better side, with far more quality and adventure, but England drew level with that soft penalty and now have a chance.

Surely have to be just a little more adventurous than this though?

  16. 'England have offered very little'published at 17:52 British Summer Time 11 October 2020

    England 1-1 Belgium

    Ben Foster
Watford and former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's not particularly great from England. Romelu Lukaku is getting far too much of the ball and dragging Belgium up the pitch. That is allowing them to dominate from there. You're going to have to ask the England centre-backs to get in front of Lukaku.

Set pieces look England's most likely way of scoring at the minute. England haven't really offered anything at all other than the odd set piece.

Sulaimon: Though it's level. Belgium are still the better side.

Richard: Southgate is playing seven defensive players and has the midfielders on a “tactic” of just getting rid of the ball ASAP. Inspiring stuff.

Rory: England fans whining that we are playing a defensive side against the best team in the world, are the same folks who would be howling about Southgate being naive if we went toe to toe and lost 4-1.

Arjun: It’s been a pretty boring game to be honest. England seem determined to make Belgium look like the #1 side even if they’re not playing like it.

The combinations of play and the patterns that Belgium do, they go forward in pockets of twos and threes and they can link up.

England at times are looking for Marcus Rashford in behind and he's on his own, or Mason Mount picks up the ball but has two players around him. If they can find those combinations and link-ups I think they'll get a better foothold in the game.

    Can't please you lot...

Lester: Southgate has fallen for the "Form is temporary, class is permanent" ruse that has ruined many an England team. Poor selection from a poor Manager. It'll only end one way!

Tom: Southgate will probably take this as a vindication of his tactics and play for the draw now...

Henderson does his best dying swan impression to fool the referee.
