    England 0-1 Belgium

Belgium just popping this about neatly now. Looking like, if not the best team in the world, comfortably the best team at Wembley today.

    What meat, James?

Why did Manchester United get rid of Romelu Lukaku again? He's just a brilliant centre-forward isn't he?

These texts and tweets make for pretty glum reading, folks...

Rob: No Grealish is scandalous! Dier in defence is scandalous! Pickford in the team is.... think you can guess! How disappointing. England lose before kicking off (as usual)

Yodasmog: just started watching as Dier dived in. Then checked the team. No Grealish or Ings but Maguire, Walker, Rashford.. I stopped there. England back to the bad old days of 'if your face fits & you play for the right team'.

Already England look second rate after only 20 minutes against a Top team. Same old story. Beat the fodder but remain knowhere against the elite. Nothing changes.

Glad I'm not watching it concentrating on roast dinner.

    England 0-1 Belgium

Nothing comes from the England corner as Kieran Trippier heads it all wrong, Belgium then cut through England in a few passes and Romelu Lukaku tees up Youri Tielemans to fire wide.

    Late offside flag up again.

Belgium are winning the ball and they've got players in such good areas. Yannick Carrasco is just on the roam, Kevin de Bruyne is on the roam - they are so hard to pick up.

They've got the licence because they've got such a focal point in Romelu Lukaku that they can bounce off. When it does break down they are on this England team, they are pressing.

England win a corner! They've been penned in for an age but Trent Alexander-Arnold gets down the right and whips in a cross that is cut out. Better.

Adam: England clueless with gaping holes in the channels. No connection between midfield and attack. Who’d have thought?

Ash: Southgate needs to start making bold decisions. Maguire is having a bad season, Dier and Walker aren’t centre backs. Rashford's been below average for United too.

Paul: I'm going to be in my shed for the next 80 minutes. Could someone come down and get me when this nightmare is over

  8. CLOSE!published at 20 mins

    England 0-1 Belgium

If you've ever seen England play since about, er, 1966, you'll be familiar with the concept but while the Three Lions look rigid and nervous Belgium's attackers are so fluent and all over the place, in a good way.

Wing-back Thomas Meunier ends up hooking a shot just wide on the spin, that was close...

    England 0-1 Belgium

England have conceded their first goal in exactly one year (1-2 v Czech Republic on 11/10/2019).

Marcus Rashford is pressed and loses it, Belgium come forward so fast and find Kevin de Bruyne, who hits a low left-footed shot and Jordan Pickford gets behind it to make the save.

    It's a good penalty, a confident one.

We were talking about the space in behind the full backs, if you're going to go one-on-one with the centre back against the forward, you're going to utilise was the space in behind.

That was beyond idiotic from Dier.

Dier better than Coady? Ha, ha, ha...

The assistant must have given that because the referee certainly didn't give it.

Eric Dier doesn't get any of the ball, and as soon as you make a slide tackle and don't win the ball it's going to be a penalty.

Ash: England very lucky there [offside goal.] Playing Dier at centre back is a risk. He’s slow when in midfield and not a natural defender. No help from Maguire, the most expensive defender either.

Richard: Too easy for Belgium to cut through this England defence

Jonathan: what an awful team. How do Grealish and Ings get dropped. Dier, trippier and rashford, really?

Utter rubbish , Belgium will watch us pass the ball between Dier and Maguire all afternoon and hit us when they can..dreadful England

    Jon

Even Mings should have started this game based on form. The fans should be the ones to select the team or have the team selected based on form. That motivates everyone to do better throughout the season.

    England 0-0 Belgium

    Rob Green
Former West Ham and England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

It was fine margins and a tight decision. I think he was just offside but Roberto Martinez looks completely baffled by that decision.

The wing backs pushed on high, the ball over the top is where the space is. If you give the defenders time they are going to pick the pass.
