Gareth has run his course. Grealish a definite to start, Mount a substitute at best. Rice a sideways player and Coady should be the mainstay of the defence. Goodbye Gareth thanks but we need to win trophies.

England will never win a major trophy under clueless Southgate. No matter how well the "fringe" players play under him, he'll always, revert to a conservative line-up for the more important games. How the likes of Grealish, Coady and Pope aren't starting is baffling. Maguire? Pickford? Even Mount when compared to Grealish. Baffling...

If the England team hasn't got enough flair in it for Watford's goalkeeper I think that is an issue.

The starting XI doesn't scream confidence to me, it doesn't scream in-form either. There's a few positions that I didn't predict, Mason Mount being one of them. I honestly thought Jack Grealish would get the nod tonight. I don't really understand that one.

Maybe Michael Keane and Conor Coady too, I thought they'd get the nod. It's going to be an interesting game for sure.

Jack Grealish played well against Wales and made the difference and I think Gareth Southgate will be looking at him and thinking 'nice one, this is the way I play but if we need a plan B he is a brilliant option'.

From where Grealish was two or three squads ago he has made massive strides to get into that position.

  6. 'I'd have liked more flair'published at 16:45 British Summer Time 11 October 2020

Gareth likes to play the players that fit his system. He likes player who he knows what's he going to get. He likes players that he can rely on. Jack Grealish has to start for pretty much any team in the world for me at the moment, he is that good. He is on form and his confidence is sky high.

It's a conservative looking side. I'd have liked more flair up there.

  7. Quite the recordpublished at 16:45 British Summer Time 11 October 2020

    England v Belgium (17:00 BST)

Belgium's fine form continued in Euro 2020 qualifying as they won all 10 group matches, scoring 40 goals and conceding just three. Theirs was the best record of any European team.

They top League A Group 2 in the Nations League after taking maximum points from their first two games - a 5-1 win over Iceland and a 2-0 victory in Denmark.

Belgium have scored in each of their last 19 away matches, scoring 54 goals.

England, who beat Iceland thanks to an injury-time penalty and were held to a dull goalless draw in Denmark, are two points behind.

  8. 'It's a great opportunity to have a fantastic game'published at 16:43 British Summer Time 11 October 2020

    England v Belgium (17:00 BST)

England manager Gareth Southgate talking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "Belgium deserve huge credit for their consistency. They've got some outstanding players that their system has developed and they've started to the deliver the performances, that the talent warranted, in the last couple of years. It will be a really tough test.

"We've got a great opportunity to have a fantastic game, it's a really good test. There's a lot riding on the game for both teams.

"I feel as if we're closer to Belgium, compared to the team that went to the World Cup. We've got far more belief in what is possible. They were further ahead in their journey when we went to Russia, they went as one of the favourites and we were one of the least experienced. The two games were a bit weird with both sides changing their whole team for the first game and then the second game being two days after the semi-final and extra-time for us."

The squad players stepped forward against Wales on Thursday - they will feel so much more at home because of it. That will improve the squad as a whole.

The squad game is going to be so much greater because of the current situation with Covid and extra games.

  11. 'Tonight will be a good benchmark'published at 16:41 British Summer Time 11 October 2020

    England v Belgium (17:00 BST)

    Ben Foster
Watford and former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

England are not a million miles away from Belgium. I think we need to believe our hype a little bit more, we saw it in the World Cup that we'd genuinely started to turn the tide but it feels like that has ebbed away in the last year or so. Tonight will be a good benchmark to see how far we've come because it's a very good Belgium side.

Guy Hide: Never thought I'd be bemoaning the fact Conor Coady didn't make the England starting XI. Lads like Maguire, Rice and Pickford expect to walk into this team. And the harsh truth is that they don't quite cut the [insert mustard emoji here]

I know Ben Chilwell is not available but how have England ended up with Kieran Trippier as first choice left wing-back? Even the two who played there in midweek, Bukayo Saka and Ainsley Maitland-Niles, don't play there through choice.

    Who are we missing?

The disrespect for Declan Rice is mad. He's in form, club captain, never misses a minute. West Ham just dominated Leicester and Wolves. Do people really think a midfield entirely made of lightweight playmakers will stop Belgium?

ReindeerHotdog: Pickford should be nowhere near this team and Grealish is one of the most exciting, talented midfielders we've had since Gerrard/Lampard yet he's stuck on the bench? Rashford has done absolutely nothing this season to warrant starting today. Perplexing from Southgate.

When will Southgate get the sack? He has reached the end of the road for England. His team selections make no sense. So dull and boring to watch too. He has an amazing talent pool to pick from and this is the best team. Joke

I would have liked to have seen Grealish and Mount play together today. I don't really get why Grealish hasn't made the team.
