Trezeguet has been as guilty of anyone of wasting opportunities. He does so again here after being found by a long ball forward. He cuts inside, past his marker but then slices his shot from the edge of the box over the bar.

Lamptey is some player. He is terrifying Villa everytime he gets the ball.

This time he sets up Welbeck for a pull-back that fizzes behind everyone.

Chance after chance going begging. Adam Lallana is totally unmarked in the box and is found by Tariq Lamptey's low cross, but he fails to get the contact he wants with his first-time shot and steers it wide.

Villa almost in trouble again, with Tyrone Mings only just able to smuggle the ball back to his keeper with Maupay lurking.

It is frantic stuff.

Brighton are really good to watch.

They've weathered the storm and they're comfortable in the fact that they will score more goals in this game if they can continue to hit Villa on the counter.

Both teams are playing well, it's end to end. It's all about game management now.

Grealish is never out of a game. He picks the ball up wide left, cuts inside and curls a shot that is designed for the far corner but fails to find it thanks to Mat Ryan's save.

Can't take your eyes off this for a second. Cash's cross is headed behind for a Villa corner.

Traore takes but a Brighton head is the first to it to nod clear.

Villa come again, though, and Trezeguet fires over from range.

All it needs from Brighton is one pass, they're happy sitting in deep and defending deep because they know the treat in behind of Aston Villa. But when they can get that one ball away Villa are so high it's an incredible pattern of play to watch in the game.

And back down the other end we go for a chance for Neal Maupay, who has just Martinez to beat from just inside the box but fails to do so. The Villa keeper did superbly to get off his line so quickly.

Villa go so, so close again. Traore's low shot is well struck but hits the base of the post before the ball is cleared.

Villa are making a right mess of defending their left side. It was that area from which Welbeck produced his goal. And Lamptey's pace is causing no end of bother. He nips in and wins the ball and is away, but has to check due to no support, which allows the home defence to rally and clear.

Can't see this staying 0-1.

Oh, wow! How are Villa not level?!

Watkins should score after Grealish finds him in the box but gets the ball stuck in his feet. No worries, though, because here is Trezeguet following up with the Albion defence scrambling. Even when his first shot is blocked, he remains favourite to score as the ball falls back at his feet.

From eight yards out, he shoot wide. How?

Aston Villa have been really aggressive with their press. Tactically they'll know they've been over-aggressive. To leave that amount of space from the halfway line is questionable.

The composure to lift that over the goalkeeper by Danny Welbeck - it's something he can really kick on from at Brighton.

Villa will still try to be aggressive because they're dominating possession.

Welbeck again with a chance, but after being found by Lamptey in the box his heavy touch allows Martinez to gather.

A goal out of nothing - unbelievable goal. Purely because the Aston Villa defence are all the way in the Brighton half. Danny Welbeck stood near the half-way line and is onside and has the whole half of the pitch to run into. He has so much time to think about it and could get it wrong in so many ways but it's a lovely composed finish.

That is Welbeck's first goal for Brighton and it comes against a preferred foe.

He has scored five goals in his last five Premier League games against Aston Villa - he's scored more top-flight goals against the Villans than he has any other side.

Villa continue to drive forward. Matty Cash skips past a challenge and gets to the byline before pulling a cross back for a team-mate, who is denied receiving it by the sliding Adam Lallana.

Brighton keeping the ball with the back three, Aston Villa approaching with a front three of Bertrand Traore, Ollie Watkins and Jack Grealish, going man for man. Brighton wanting to keep the ball and looking forward and when they look forward the only option they have is to go long and they have to go forward at some point. They need to get higher up the pitch with the ball.
