  7. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 77 mins

    Newcastle 0-2 Chelsea

Been a bad week for Werner. Germany got spanked by Spain and he has missed a load of chances here. Got an assist, though, so there is a silver lining.

He is replaced by Callum Hudson-Odoi.

  8. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 76 mins

    Newcastle 0-2 Chelsea

Werner thinks he has his goal, but the flag is up to chalk it off after he had collected Ziyech's pass, rounded the keeper and scored.

    Send for Andy.

It's the old 'Plan B' for Newcastle as Carroll is thrown into the mix. It is not for Joelinton, though. It is Saint-Maximin who departs. Two big men up top. Now who supplies the crosses?

  10. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 73 mins

Oh what a goal this would have been.

Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff unleashes a rising, angled drive from well outside the box and is denied by the crossbar.

    Newcastle 0-2 Chelsea

Tammy Abraham has scored in three consecutive appearances in all competitions for the first time since September 2019.

It felt at the start of the season like he would end up warming the bench after all that summer spending. He's making himself undroppable.

This was planned before the goal. It is even more necessary after it. Miguel Almiron replaces Javier Manquillo.

    Tammy Abraham

    And surely that is that.

Timo Werner has spurned a few chances of his own today, but he does superbly here to set up Abraham to score. The German charges through a gigantic hole in the home defence before laying a perfect pass for the England striker to coolly slot in off the post.

1-0 was salvageable for Newcastle. But 2-0? Nah.

Newcastle have got the bit between their teeth at last.

And another chance goes begging as Joelinton curls a shot wide from the edge of the box. This is a game now and Chelsea are wobbling.

Oh, there it is. That was the chance for Newcastle. But wait, was it?

Isaac Hayden muscles his way through the middle and has just Mendy to beat from 12 yards, but somehow finds a way to scoop it over.

The ref on the field has given a free-kick against Hayden for handball during the process of setting up the chance, but VAR would have picked the bones out of it.

    Still a shocking miss.

Paul: Not gonna moan at Newcastle for how they play too much but these games are essentially free hits anyway given they're expected to lose. So why not go for it? Better to lose having given it a go than play how they do. May as well just forfeit the game.

    Newcastle 0-1 Chelsea

Newcastle almost gift Chelsea the goal that would surely settle this game. A dire attempted back-pass by Schar is nicked by Timo Werner, but with only Darlow to beat he bizarrely opts to pass instead of shoot - straight to a home defender, who clears.

Soon after, Kurt Zouma heads wide from a corner after rising way above everyone else.
