That was the start of a run of seven matches in less than four weeks for Brighton and Southampton.

Next up for Graham Potter's beaten side is a trip to Leicester on Sunday, ahead of two key games against sides below them in Fulham and Sheffield United.

Southampton welcome Sheffield United to St Mary's on Sunday, with tough games against Arsenal and Manchester City to follow next week.

Will they still be in the mix after that run?

  3. 'Where is the consistency?'published at 22:37 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2020

Brighton full-back Solly March, speaking to BBC Sport: "It is hard to take. I've looked at it five or six times and I don't know how you can prove there was contact in the box.

"I don't know how that decision was made to be honest. We collided outside the box, both fell over and slid into the box.

"It is just consistency, I don't think there is any. It is just random decisions that I don't think the people who play football would give but I don't want to say much."

  4. 'It was a penalty'published at 22:35 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2020

    Brighton 1-2 Southampton

    Southampton

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhutltl speaking to Sky Sports: "I also take undeserved wins, we saw a tight game today. It was clear a few chances would decide this game. The long ball was what we trained all week to come in behind their back five. The penalty was inside [the box] and you can then decide the game with a good fighting spirit."

On his side's penalty: "I think it was inside the box, it was a penalty and that's why we have VAR.

"We lost last game which gives an impact and you must say today with supporters back it's a different game - it's more hectic and not so calm. The circumstances were tough today against a good opponent."

On Danny Ings' impact: "I hoped he would give us a boost up front. Everyone knows his qualities, around the box he is always dangerous. It was important to have him back."

Robert Weaver: Why can't managers be honest when a poor decision has gone their way? Steve Bruce went up in my estimation when he said he disagreed with the penalty decision awarded to Newcastle at Spurs. Hasenhuttl has just gone a long way down.

The Brighton Bard: Sometimes it takes away, But in others it provides, But the utter disdain for it, Most real football fans can’t hide, We want our old game back, Most of us are really keen, We want to enjoy the game, Without being forced to look at a big screen.

  6. 'Danger of over-refereeing'published at 22:31 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2020

    Brighton 1-2 Southampton

    Brighton & Hove Albion

More from Potter on whether games are being over-refereed: "There is a danger of that. As you have one on the pitch and one checking the decisions so there will be a bit more intervention but it is what it is. I have said before sometimes they go with you and sometimes they go against us and today it went against us.

"It is hard to control a game for 90 minutes, you have to accept a team will come back into it and Southampton are a good team. To concede just before half time was disappointing and then the margin could have gone either way with the free kick but not to be.

"You have forgotten what it is like to have the supporters but they were good."

  7. 'Sometimes they go against you'published at 22:29 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2020

    Brighton 1-2 Southampton

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton boss Graham Potter, on the late penalty decision, speaking to BBC Sport: "I think the first challenge is probably outside the box and whether there was another challenge inside the box that is what they are trying to work out. It didn't seem so clear and obvious. If they think that is what it is then we have to accept it.

"The sense was it was going to be outside the box. Things surprise you."

  9. 'It was clear inside the box'published at 22:24 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2020

    Brighton 1-2 Southampton

    Southampton

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl, speaking to BBC Sport: "With the ball I didn't think we played our best game. It was slippery on the pitch, every player had problems. Then it is a lot of risk when you try to build up, make the passes on the ground. The crowd was also there, for the players a little but more stress. In the end a brilliant penalty by Danny Ings. A win like this last season I don't think we had a lot of. Good to see.

"I didn't see the first penalty. For the second one, that is why we have VAR, especially when it is about decisions if it is in or not then you need this. I think it was clear inside the box. It is not nice to get a penalty against you but the decision from what I have seen was relatively clear.

"We have everybody fit now, we are going into a very tense period of the season and we need every player."

Not sure why there's such controversy over whether Ings scores a penalty or Ward-Prowse scores a free kick.

There is, of course, also this argument...

  11. 'If it's factual, that's what VAR's there for'published at 22:20 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2020

    Brighton 1-2 Southampton

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton manager Graham Potter speaking to Sky Sports on Southampton's penalty: "I'm not sure. I haven't seen it back. It looked like the first challenge was outside. I don't know if there was a second but that's what the referee seemed to think.

"I thought it was quite an even game so I'm disappointed with the result. If it's factual and the offence is inside and they've proved that's the case, then that's what it's there for and it's what you have to accept.

"I think we can play better and that's what we'll focus on. It's hard in the Premier League to control all aspects for 90 minutes. We weren't able to survive the first half pressure which is disappointing.

"It's the challenge of the Premier League, we must focus on what we can do better. We can play better than we did in the second half."

A remarkably calm Graham Potter says his side simply need to focus on what they can do better, despite all the VAR controversy.

More from Jannik Vestergaard, speaking about the penalty decision: "I was one of the guys furthest away. It looked like a foul, I couldn't tell if it was inside or outside. I was happy that it was given, Danny Ings stepped up. But I can't comment on it."

  14. 'Danny Ings is one of the best'published at 22:14 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2020

    Brighton 1-2 Southampton

    Southampton

Southampton defender Jannik Vestergaard: "Back to winning ways. We knew it would be a difficult game. Brighton are a very good team, very organised and know what they are doing. They gave us some challenges throughout the game. They made it difficult for us but I still think we managed to get into the game and in the second half I thought we did very well and deservedly won.

"Mine was a good goal. Nice little moment for me personally, nice scoring. Great cross. I was pretty unmarked so it felt very smooth. We have generally become more dangerous off set pieces.

"Danny Ings is up there, one of the best strikers in the league in my opinion. I wouldn't lie, it gives us a boost just to have him around the team. He is a very important player for us. A talented man and a respected human being as well."

  15. 'I just stood hoping it was a penalty'published at 22:12 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2020

    Brighton 1-2 Southampton

    Southampton

Southampton striker Danny Ings speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a tough game tonight. You could see the fans getting behind them which is great for them but not for us."

On his side's penalty: "I just stood with the ball hoping it was a penalty. I couldn't see much on the screen, I was just professional and took the penalty.

"I didn't see it clearly enough to know. Sometimes these decsions go for you and sometimes they don't.

"To get the penalty and score - I'm extremely happy."

Hmm, on the replays it does look like the initial contact between Solly March and Kyle Walker-Peters is outside the area. If indeed that was the concern, rather than whether it was even a foul.

We'll bring you the thoughts of the managers and players as soon as we get them.

  18. Postpublished at 22:02 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2020

Brighton have now gone 10 Premier League games without a win at home (D4 L6).

That's their longest run without a victory on home soil in the league since a run of 12 in the fourth tier back in February 1998.

  19. 'Southampton flying'published at 21:59 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2020

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

It is another big win for Southampton but I have to say controversial - the penalty award. Danny Ings tucked it away well. Southampton are absolutely flying. The confidence in that team is amazing.
