I could be bitter. I have left the club under Graham Potter's tenure but I left happily and he supported my decision.

I felt I wasn't going to play much in this Brighton team, I wanted to go and try and play more which hasn't quite worked out.

I think he has done a fantastic job. The club is going through a transitional period and they are going through it really well. It is perfect apart from not getting as many goals as they would like.

Once he gets that right I think he can really push the club forward.

  6. Brighton to finally beat Saints?published at 19:56 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2020

    Brighton v Southampton (20:00 GMT)

    Mark Lawrenson
    BBC football expert

Southampton have got some good unsung players including James Ward-Prowse, who scored those two cracking goals against Aston Villa and grabbed another in the defeat by Manchester United last week. He'll be a threat again against the Seagulls.

Ralph Hasenhuttl has done a fabulous job and the club deserve a pat on the back for holding on to him despite that 9-0 defeat against Leicester last year.

Brighton were good against Liverpool in last week's 1-1 draw and have started to look like a decent side. I know they haven't beaten the Saints since they came up to the Premier League but I fancy them to end that run.

    Prediction: 2-0

Graham Potter's side battled to a well-deserved point against defending champions Liverpool at home nine days ago, courtesy of Pascal Gross' injury-time penalty.

Southampton, however, let a two-goal lead slip as they lost 3-2 to Manchester United at St Mary's - their first defeat in eight games.

Funny that Saints v Brighton or Bournemouth will never become a proper derby like a Pompey game.

  9. How Hasenhuttl shook up Saintspublished at 19:49 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2020

    Brighton v Southampton (20:00 GMT)

Ralph Hasenhuttl celebrated his two-year anniversary as Southampton manager on Saturday.

Hasenhuttl signed a four-year contract extension earlier this year and guided Saints to the top of the Premier League for the very first time on 6 November.

And, of course, it's difficult not to mention the contrast to their start last year - and that bruising 9-0 home defeat by Leicester.

Simon Stone has taken an in-depth look at how Hasenhuttl has shaken up the Saints, which you can read over here.

  10. 'Brighton slow in build-up'published at 19:45 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2020

    Brighton v Southampton (20:00 GMT)

    Glenn Murray
Brighton striker on BBC Radio 5 live

Since Graham Potter came in Brighton are a bit slower in the build up.

It is a prettier brand of football which is extremely good.

It is just in the final third, if they can add goals there's a chance of rising up the table.

Jack Tanner: halfway through the season (normally at Christmas)

Re: 'early days' - Let's just see how the land lies when everybody's played everybody else. An element of match play kicks in after that, six-pointers at both ends of the table. In keeping with this weird year, I reckon neutrals are in for an exciting end to the season...

    Mike, Wigan.

We'll go with 19 matches then, unless anyone disagrees...

  13. A first for Brighton?published at 19:39 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2020

    Brighton v Southampton (20:00 GMT)

Brighton are winless in their six Premier League meetings with Southampton, though four of those games have ended in a draw.

Southampton are unbeaten in their past seven matches against Brighton in all competitions, winning three.

  14. Breathing space for Brighton?published at 19:34 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2020

    Brighton v Southampton (20:00 GMT)

The first target for Graham Potter's side will be to establish a comfortable barrier between themselves and trouble.

Tonight's game offers a great opportunity to begin building that, with Burnley the only side below Brighton to pick up a point over the weekend.

Three points for the Seagulls would see them seven points clear of the bottom three - and above Arsenal.

When does 'early days' become 'oh wow they're having a great season', anyway?

Is it after Christmas? After 19 matches? 15? 30?

  16. Saints shoot for fifthpublished at 19:26 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2020

    Brighton v Southampton (20:00 GMT)

If Southampton do manage to make it 1,000 Premier League points this evening, they will jump from eighth to fifth in the standings.

You're probably doing OK if both Manchester clubs are behind you at this stage of the season.

Yes, both United and City would have a game in hand. And, yes, it's 'early days'.

But what a turnaround it would represent - they didn't reach the 20-point mark until their 19th game last season.

  17. A chance to hit 1000published at 19:23 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2020

    Brighton v Southampton (20:00 GMT)

Southampton have earned 997 Premier League points to date.

So victory tonight would make them the 11th side to reach the 1,000-point mark in the competition's history.

But can they get there tonight?

I wonder if the only thing stopping bigger clubs coming in for Ings is his injury record. Otherwise in the top 3 best English strikers.

You'd have to assume so, Shaun. He's been in brilliant form.

    Brighton v Southampton (20:00 GMT)

After an unpredictable start, it's all starting to look a bit more normal at the top of the Premier League.

Tottenham, Liverpool, Chelsea, Leicester, Manchester United and Manchester City all won at the weekend to occupy the top six places - with just six points separating leaders Spurs from City in sixth.

Southampton are right in the mix though, with a win tonight able to take them four points off the top.
