United threaten from a corner as Rangers allow the delivery to bounce in a busy penalty box. Mark Connolly has two thrashes at the ball at the back post, then it breaks to Mark Reynolds, who drills in a low shot but it can't get through the forest of legs in front of goalkeeper Allan McGregor.

Two home defenders are out quickly to block as James Tavernier has a pop at goal from the edge of the United penalty box.

Rangers with the lion's share of early possession as Dundee United sit deep in their own half.

A peep of the whistle from referee Steven McLean and away we go.

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has been telling Sky Sports that his changes are designed to keep everyone fresh during a busy run of fixtures.

"It is not about egos, it is about the squad and everyone has their role to play," he says.

"There is a lot of football coming up, the games are coming thick and fast and everyone needs to be ready to come in and contribute at the right time."

Gerrard is pleased that a number of players are contributing to Rangers' goal tally this season and they are not having to rely on Alfredo Morelos as much as last term.

"I'm expecting a tough game," he adds. "Micky Mellon is an experienced manager. He has been around for a long time, he is a good manager that has come in and done ever so well. We expect him to have his team well drilled."

Dundee United manager Micky Mellon is delighted to be back after a period of isolation even if some of his players are not: "If you look at our starting XI it's a strong group," he tells BBC Sportsound. "The bench is made up with young players but it is what it is and we'll get on with it.

"We think this is a team that can answer the questions Rangers will ask of us and maybe ask them a few questions as well. It's an exciting challenge and we know we need to get a lot of things right.

"We are a newly promoted team and we are growing. This is the next opportunity to move the team forward."

Dundee United have done pretty well on their return to the top flight, sitting comfortably in the middle of the table.

The main issue for manager Micky Mellon has been his blunt attack, which is something of a surprise given they have Lawrence Shankland, Nicky Clark and Marc McNulty as options up top.

Last Saturday's 2-0 defeat away to Livingston was the eighth time in 16 league fixtures that the United frontline have failed to hit the back of the net.

James Tavernier was on target in that earlier win over United and the Rangers captain just can't stop scoring this season.

He was at it again last weekend, knocking one in against Ross County, taking his tally to 16 in all competitions.

The right-back is the Premiership's top scorer on 10, leaving all the strikers in his wake - and he's top of the assists table with seven, just for good measure.

In September, Rangers had no bother sweeping United aside in a 4-0 win at Ibrox.

Steven Gerrard's side broke a 114-year clean sheet record that day and that defensive solidity shows no signs of letting up, with just three goals conceded in 16 league outings.

Ryan Kent, James Tavernier, Kemar Roofe and Scott Arfield were the scorers in that one-sided affair. Will it be a case of the same again today or will United put up more of a fight on their own turf?

It's a big day for Kerr Smith, who turned 16 yesterday and signed his first professional deal. Now the teenager finds himself on the Dundee United bench for a game against the runaway league leaders.

Kerr had attracted a lot of interest from clubs in England, so United are delighted that he has opted to stay with them.
