  2. 'I expect City to find a way through'published at 19:01 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2021

Manchester City v Crystal Palace (19:15 GMT)

    Mark Lawrenson
    BBC football expert

Manchester City have got a run of league fixtures coming up where in normal circumstances you would expect them to win all of them - after this game they play Aston Villa (h), West Brom (a), Sheffield United (h) and Burnley (a).

But their games are coming thick and fast and, somewhere along the line, City are going to drop points. Everyone else has been doing it, so it doesn't matter very much - my point is that we are not going to see a runaway winner of the Premier League this season.

Of course, in isolation, I am going to back City to win this game. They ended up hanging on against Brighton in midweek but they still got the job done.

You know how Palace will set up, and they will be very well organised. I still expect City to find a way through.

    Prediction: 3-0

  4. 'My boys had a good game tonight'published at 18:53 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2021

    Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to Sky Sports: "If we won 1-0 I'd think it was completely fine. You can't deny Manchester United chances for 90 minutes. You never could. They're in a good moment.

"With all the things said before the game - they're flying and we're struggling - my boys did a good game tonight.

"First half the counter-press was great, passing was good. But we didn't score. That's the most important thing in football.

"The second half was a bit more open. They had two big chances - Alisson made two good saves.

"There is no easy explanation [for their recent lack of goals]. You always miss chances. You have to keep going and try to ignore the talk around it. Everyone wants to see goals. You cannot force it.

"It's football. These moments happen. You have moments where you can't explain why you score from all angles. Against Crystal Palace everything ended up in the net. It's a bit annoying in between these moments.

"I like the game. I saw a lot of really good individual perfomances and the team performance was good. Not the result we wanted, but the result we got."

  5. 'It's a bit flat in the dressing room'published at 18:49 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2021

    Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United

    Manchester United

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw to BBC Sport: "It's a bit flat in the dressing room.

"They had the majority of the ball but we all felt we could have won the game. They had chances but not clear-cut like ours.

"A point is better than none.

"We didn't start well and we were on the back foot straight away. We dug in and created good chances.

"We said before the game coming down the one-way street usually you see all the fans. It did feel a bit flat but we need to get used to this. It doesn't feel like fans are coming back any time soon. But we're professional footballers, we need to clear all that out."

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer speaking to Sky Sports: "I think we grew in the game and toward the end it was there for us to win. We created two massive chances and it was two brilliant saves by the keeper.

"We can play better than this, we can be more composed, we can have the ball more We had to defend really often today. There are a couple of tings for us to improve on

"I though Paul (Pogba) was absolutely brilliant today. We knew he had to do a job defensively to help us with Robertson and I thought he was excellent and should have got the goal his performance deserved."

Liverpool's Jordan Henderson speaking to Sky Sports: "We are a little disappointed we haven't taken three points at home. I thought we did enough to win the game, especially first half. We had a lot of the ball we created chanced but just couldn't find back if then net

"Yes, they had one or two chances - they were dangerous on the counter - but overall I thought we were the better team to win the game.

"I would say the performance levels haven't been up to our standards in the past few week. We just showed that we have got to keep going, work hard and improving. We will not stop now."

The match might have been dull but that title race is anything but. Lots of teams well and truly in it, very much including City.

Seem to be in the few fans who recognise that this Utd team maybe aren't quite there but it's coming together. Didn't grab it by the throat but we're competing with the big boys again and showing that we are a legitimate threat to the status quo

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to BBC Sport: "It's only a good result if we win the next game.

"It was an opportunity missed with the chances we had but then again we were playing a very good side. I'm disappointed but still a point is OK if you win the next one.

"We were stronger towards the end. We didn't start at all in the first half. We didn't have any composure or try to impose ourselves.

"The team is working hard for each other.

"We have improved and progressed. It's not just the result we're disappointed with, it's some of the performance. I know these boys can play better.

"Fair play to them - with two central midfielders at the back and to defend as well as they did shows their quality."

  12. 'Stones deserves credit for taking his opportunity'published at 18:33 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2021

Manchester City v Crystal Palace (19:15 GMT)

    Joleon Lescott
Ex-Manchester City defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

At the start of the season John Stones was probably fifth choice centre back so he’s been fortunate there’s been a few injuries and inconsistent performances from all the players. But what he deserves credit for is making sure he was ready when he was given the opportunity.

At the start of the season Ruben Dias came in and everyone thought it would be Dias and Aymeric Laporte then Nathan Ake came in and there were games where Fernandinho was ahead of him and Eric Garcia was ahead of him. For him to be in control of anything he needed to realise I need to match up with Dias, just do what he’s doing and not doing anything more and it’s working for both of them.

    Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United

    Manchester United

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire to Sky Sports: "They started better than us but second half we came into a lot more. We created the best chances and on another day we win.

"It was cagey. Two good teams matching up. We created openings and had two great chances, two great saves.

"There is a lot of talk of Liverpool being without their first-choice centre-halves but they've had a great defensive record since these injuries. They have lots of options.

"We wanted to win. You could see our intent in the second half, we wanted three points. We'll feel a bit disappointed. It'sa tough place to come.

"You can see our performance compared to last year when we weren't brave at all. We were a bit timid."

Andrew Morris: It's OGS' last hurdle to clear as a big club manager - the ability to win that important or momentum swinging game. MUFC could have really announced something in beating Liverpool but couldn't quite get there. Not sure 0-0s against Liverpool or City cut it.

Callum Johnstone: City now top of the points per game table before having kicked a ball today. Worth noting with all the talk of circuit breaks and elite sport being paused etc

  18. 'Neither team went for it'published at 18:25 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2021

    FT: Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United

    Dion Dublin
Former Man Utd striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Neither side really set the world alight today, neither of them really went for it, Liverpool possibly nicked the first half and it was even stevens in the second half. Thiago was outstanding, Luke Shaw was very good at left-back but it was very much a stalemate, very much a game of chess.

I'm assuming both managers will think that's fair enough, neither of us were good and let's just get away from here with a point and they'll probably take that.
