    Fulham 0-0 Man Utd

Slightly unconvincing defending from Manchester United in these early stages as they give the ball away cheaply. Ademola Lookman takes a few steps towards goal before letting fly from distance but his shot is straight at David de Gea.

  2. 'There is VAR here'published at 20:17 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2021

    Manchester City 2-0 Aston Villa

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola on BT Sport: "It was a very good performance again, against a top side. They are very dangerous and just look at their results this season. A big victory.

"The most difficult thing is to score a goal, in the second half we were more aggressive.

"I didn't see the action [for the first goal], I know they were complaining but I didn't see it."

Would you be unhappy if it happened to you? "Yeah.

"There is VAR here no? So, I don't know the rule or the situation but they analysed it.

"Noone else has won five, six in a row but it's still the first leg of the season. A lot of games to do but the important thing is that the feeling is good."

  4. 'It was a farcical decision'published at 20:15 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2021

FT: Manchester City 2-0 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith, speaking to MOTD: "It was a farcical decision. I've not seen a goal like that given. It needs to be looked at. I don't think anyone in this stadium thought it was a goal.

"I thought they would go over to the VAR screen. I saw the incident and saw it was kicking off, so I asked the fourth officials did they get juggling balls for Christmas.

"For the second goal, a header from a yard out that has hit his arm. That's not handball. Ridiculous.

"It was a heroic performance in terms of energy and commitment but we didn't show enough quality against a very good team.

"It's been tough but much tougher for other people across the country, so it's not too hard for my lads to do 10 days in isolation when some people have done it for nine months."

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith to BT Sport: "In terms of effort, it was heroic. We only had three days' training and played a very good team. They had lots of chances but they've missed them and they've been given two goals at the end.

"Are we just going to leave players behind the line then? It's farcical. He was 10 yards offside and come back and tackled our player, it's a pathetic law and a pathetic decision.

"I said to the fourth official David Coote 'did you get juggling balls for Christmas?' I don't think any other manager would get sent off for that.

"Matty Cash is a yard away for the handball, he can't jump without his arms up. He didn't even look at it, it flabbergasts me. It was a poor performance from the officials and that's cost us."

  7. 'We are very happy with the three points'published at 20:07 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2021

FT: Manchester City 2-0 Aston Villa

    Manchester City

Manchester City goalscorer Bernando Silva on BT Sport: "It was a very important win, a tough game for us. just three more points and on to the next one.

"It felt like an important win because we got to 75th minute without scoring, so to get those two goals, we're very happy.

"Its been a long time since I have scored. I'm happy to score. It doesn't matter who scores the goals but I'm happy to score today. Most important we are leaders for now. There is still a long way to go but still, very happy.

"We're doing very well, very solid at the back. We are happy with the last two games and our momentum."

On whether the first goal was offside: "I haven't checked it yet. Our player was offside but when their defender touched it, he stops being offside, I think. But I haven't checked it.

Scott: That is a truly shocking decision and to not even use VAR is beyond belief.

Stuart Marshall: The most blatant offside since VAR began ruining football. You can be offside by an elbow but 20 yards is onside?! What a joke. Awful. Man City very lucky, not a Villa fan but I think Dean Smith should get an apology from the officials.

Thanks Tom! Those post-match quotes are certainly going to be interesting.

As it is, that is a win that puts Manchester City top of the table for now, although that could change in a couple of hours depending on how Manchester United get on against Fulham.

Aston Villa have been excellent tonight. They will have a lot of tired legs out there and you can see why Dean Smith made changes. They were excellent and definitely competed in the game.

Shane O'Neil: The first City goal was a shocking decision and the second a poor decision at best. This could decide the title. I have said for years that Jon Moss doesn't belong at this level. Very poor, and that's being generous.

Pav Dhande: To VAR or not VAR, that is the question. But one which referees seem to be showing absolutely no consistency over.

Chris Judge: There's often an element of luck needed over a season to win the league. City's year again?

I can't even think why that goal was allowed to stand, I guess it must be something to do with Rodri not interfering with play or something but, come on now.

It's a good penalty. Gundogan has got that ability where he just waits for Martinez to dive and he just puts it down the middle. Really composed finish.

The scoreline doesn't flatter City because they have been dominant but you have to feel sorry for Villa.
