If you employ a manager with little experience then you need to give him time. Lampard was always destined to fail under Abramhovic.

Gareth Bale is yet to complete 90 minutes since returning to Tottenham on loan from Real Madrid, and boss Jose Mourinho says the Welshman has to earn his playing time.

"I cannot give players minutes, minutes on the pitch is not something I can give, so I'm not going in this direction," said the Portuguese.

"We all know the difficulties he had for a couple seasons, we all know that he arrived injured, we all know that even this season a little bit up and down with small things.

"The most important thing for him is to be consistent, training without any problems and when a player is consistent in training, high intensity without any kind problems, then the player is ready, not to be given minutes, but is ready to earn minutes, and that for me is a difference."

Bale does get his chance tonight.

You know what they say about the year ending in '1'...

Half of Tottenham's eight FA Cup wins have come in that scenario - 1901, 1921, 1961 and 1991 - so is it Spurs' lucky year once again?

It's 30 years since their last success in the competition, while boss Jose Mourinho won it with Chelsea in 2007. The Blues also bagged the League Cup that year, something that is still a possibility for Mourinho's Spurs.

“When I won the FA Cup, I felt amazing feelings because it brought me back to the times when Portugal stopped,” Mourinho told the club website. “There weren’t many matches, foreign matches, on TV and the FA Cup Final was always there.

“It brought me back as a kid to getting in love with some clubs, with some players, unforgettable moments, the memories of my dad, and, for me, the FA Cup will always be the FA Cup, for me, always special. However, I don’t like it too much when the giant that is killed is my team!”

Tottenham have progressed from 20 of their last 21 FA Cup ties against sides from a lower division. The exception in that run was a 1-2 defeat at Leeds in January 2013, which was also Gareth Bale's last start in the competition

Frank Lampard sacked as Chelsea boss

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Frank Lampard has had one blip, one bit of adversity in 18 months. Yes, results have not gone well and he has held his hands up, he understands that. I think he even spoke about an air of positivity after the win against Luton yesterday.

Because Lampard hasn't got the most out of these players in half a season, over a short period of time, he should be sacked? I think it's incredibly harsh, based on his track record of last season. They are five points of fourth place. The bottom line os though, the owner wants to win the Premier League - and that was always going to be the pressure. I feel sorry for Frank. Chelsea should've been loyal.

Uncle Nosa: Why are people shocked that Lampard got sacked. Abramovic cannot afford to show the next manager that he is getting soft. He is not and he wasn’t satisfied with results/business. The next manager’s minimum objective will be top 4 and next season, champions.

    Wycombe v Tottenham (19:45 GMT)

Seventy-one places separated these sides the last time they met - that 4-3 thriller at White Hart Lane in 2017. Two promotions for Wycombe since then mean Gareth Ainsworth's side have closed the gap considerably.

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has met the Chairboys before, knocking them out in the League Cup semi-final in 2007 with Chelsea in a 5-1 aggregate scoreline.

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth on BT Sport: "It has been very tough. The boys are in good shape, the mental state is more important than the physical state sometimes. It is a challenge but we are very good at adaptability

"It's an amazing team Jose has put out. I can't remember a better subs' bench than Tottenham's tonight. We want to show what we have done over the past four years since we last played Tottenham. We will give everything.

"I played some of the goals from four years ago to the boys to show them it can be done. This competition has a fantastic history and the destiny is in these boys' hands tonight."

    Wycombe v Tottenham (19:45 GMT)

Wycombe Wanderers have not played since 9 January because of a Covid outbreak in the squad, with their last fixture a 4-1 win over Preston in the fourth round.

They face a Spurs side who have also had an unusually quiet week, having enjoyed eight days off since their 3-1 win over Sheffield United in the Premier League after a frantic period.

Spurs, who beat Marine in the last round, host Liverpool on Thursday.

Gareth Ainsworth could be forgiven for concentrating on the league.

HIs Wycombe side sit bottom of the Championship, 10 points from safety and with a shoddy goal difference to boot.

They do, however, have two games in hand on those sitting just outside the relegation zone and a cup upset against Premier League Tottenham might be just the boost they need...

Frank Lampard sacked as Chelsea boss

    Micah Richards
Former Man City defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I don't know what Frank Lampard was expected to do? I think Lampard was exactly the same as Ole Gunnar Solskjær at Manchester United - he just needed time. The only thing with both Lampard and Solskjær is they didn't really have that much experience managing at this level, so they had to be club legends to be managing at these clubs.

The difference between the two is Lampard knew how cut-throat Roman Abramovich could be. And being a Chelsea legend - no matter the performances on the pitch - it didn't really matter because it is a business.

But I truly believe he needed more time to do what he needed to do. It was too early. At least give it another month or two.
