Michael West: Anyone feel that Liverpool’s home form has been affected by the fan situation. Fans came back and made a helluva a noise for 2,000 and since the fans are no longer there they have not even played close to their best. Today’s game is like a poor training session.

On this lacklustre evidence, do Manchester City want to win this? Of course not. They just don't want Liverpool to. Surprised to see Gundogan actually putting my theory into action though.

Out of nowhere, my mate Bobbie poses a good half-time query:

When was the last incident of 'dog on the pitch' in the top flight? Feel like it used to happen at least once a week in our youth.

Oliver Camp: Even in these big, high stakes games, it's obviously hard for the same level of intensity to be reached without the crowd. Not a lot of sharpness or movement off the ball. Everyone is waiting for something to happen

Regardless of the injuries in Liverpool's defence, the match has shown the midfield of Jones and Wijnaldum is not as good as that of Henderson and Fabinho.

The away side has won just one of the last 24 Premier League meetings between Liverpool and Man City, with Liverpool winning 4-1 at the Etihad in November 2015.

The away side should be ahead this afternoon.

  10. Sheer frustration for Guardiolapublished at 17:21 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2021

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Anfield

Pep Guardiola's reaction to that penalty miss said it all. It was the moment he was craving - the chance to go ahead at Liverpool then dictate terms.

Liverpool have had a couple of good opportunities from open play but Ilkay Gundogan's miss was the big moment of an unspectacular half.

Curtis Jones has been excellent for Liverpool.

This has started up where the last one left off. Boring, boring, boring. Both teams playing for 0-0, too scared to lose.

Can't wait for normal football to resume. This isn't a normal Liverpool/City game. Let's get this novelty season over with and hope for normality in August.

Liz Tray: I don't know how a German player can Waddle it over the bar like that. We cannot do that. If we're going to be serious this season and mount a title run, for real, we simply cannot miss golden chances. Of all people. Not even on target.

Neil Trainis: Thank you Gundogan! What a let-off. Shades of Mahrez blazing over the bar from the spot...

Mark McDuffell: Ridiculous challenge from Fabinho. Even more ridiculous penalty from Gundogan. Kind of sums this game up really

No side has failed to score more penalties in the Premier League this season than Man City (3 - level with Fulham).

You should always hit the target shouldn't you? You get fired in the NFL for that.

Wow! Short run-up, went for power and pulls it over the bar. What a miss that is. What is it with City and penalties against Liverpool?

It was great play from Raheem Sterling. Went past Alexander-Arnold and then Fabinho stuck his leg out.
