Manchester United youngster Shola Shoretire is warming up - he came through at the famed Wallsend club in the north east.

Miguel Almiron then fires in a shot fron range and it's an easy enough save for David de Gea.

Steve Bruce will be delighted with this opening third though.

Miguel Almiron must be right up there with the fastest players in the league. He takes yards out of Victor Lindelof after knocking the ball down the line but eventually he's forced into company.

It's not often you watch a game at the moment without a muscle injury and Joelinton is down getting treatment for Newcastle at the moment.

Nicky Butt, on the Manchester United bench tonight, shakes his head at something Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says. The hosts are starting to dominate the game now though as that early Newcastle press wears off.

Steve Bruce's voice is echoing around Old Trafford as he urges his team to press high up the pitch. You can really hear every spit, shout and protest around this football theatre with no fans in the stadium. Harry Maguire already has plenty to say to the near-side linesman.

It has been like a basketball game - it has been end-to-end. Newcastle are showing real intent to get in behind.

There is an energy about Newcastle that I haven't seen for a number of weeks but Manchester United look dangerous on the counter. They look a bit leggy after the game in midweek though.

Nice from Newcastle again, they keep it well, pin Manchester United back and Allan Saint-Maximin is inches away from picking out the run of Jonjo Shelvey in the middle.

At the other end Dan James bashes in a low cross that Karl Darlow almost fumbles and Anthony Martial was right there waiting for a tap-in. Darlow pounces on it.

Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola speaking to BBC MOTD: "They are aggressive with one-to-one pressing. They move really well in the pockets and speed from the sides. It's so difficult to play against. We knew today would be one of the toughest ones but we scored early and we could control it.

"The first 10-15 minutes were so good then the next half an hour they were much better than us. The feeling is that they are close. In the second half, we needed something to be more effective in our pressing and we were much better.

"Of course, we could score the second and the third but we scored then they defend well. It's so difficult to play Arsenal and Mikel [Arteta]. He knows our players so well. It is not easy to play and we play so, so calm and intelligent. It was a good game.

"Every game you are not going to win games 2-0, 3-0, 4-0, sometimes when you win 1-0 it is so good. We have to realise what we are doing is so difficult. It is a struggle, a fight, behind the ball and that is why we like this result.

"It is one more, one more. We think all the time the next one. That is now Champions League, then West Ham at home. One at a time. 39 points to play. We have 10 up front. So we have to win."

A 9-0 for either side may be a stretch tonight. Newcastle have certainly made a promising start though, they are not giving the home side a second on the ball. Luke Shaw then clobbers Emil Krafth after he appears from nowhere to nick it off him.

Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola talking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "It was brilliant. It was a real tough game, one of the toughest, for the way that they play, the quality and ideas that they have. It is so difficult and we did it.

"The first 15-20 minutes were incredibly good and after that they were better - they were much better at the end of the first half and we suffered. At half-time we changed something in the pressing, and the way that we played was more controlled.

"We're only thinking about the next one. The run has been incredible - I could not expect it, but that is good."

Excellent pressure again from Miguel Almiron, he forces Victor Lindelof to pass it to David de Gea, who fluffs his kick straight to Joelinton.

His touch isn't great and he can only square it to Jonjo Shelvey, who balloons his shot over the bar.

Poor strike but good intention from the away side.

Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Conceding early puts them where they want to be. After that we did really well and created some great opportunities.

"They are a fantastic team. I think we did well, but for me that means nothing. We prepared to win and I’m disappointed not to take anything from the game.

"They are so good at doing what they do. They’ve been together for five years. This is why they are where they are.

"The final quality you need to score goals, we were missing today."

Uncle Busby: Horrific feeling about tonight. I can see Man United missing chances, being sloppy on the ball and giving away an early goal. Then end up chasing a point.

This is what I wanted to see from Newcastle - with the high press and not letting Manchester United out.

Joe Willock has brought energy to the Newcastle midfield and that was something that they didn't have at all.

What a mess - but nearly the opener! Jonjo Shelvey slips as he puts in a cross, it loops up and David de Gea punches it out under pressure. Joelinton shoots, it takes a sizable deflection, loops toward the other corner and De Gea has to react well to tip it over the bar.
