Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "When we analyse it, I was very pleased for an hour. We're disappointed with the first goal, it goes in at the keeper's near post, and he's going to look at that and we shouldn't be letting Marcus Rashford cut inside of us.

"We got back into the game, but unfortunately there was an awful deflection on the second goal and the penalty. I don't know. We've got fourth officials and VAR, it looks like he stood on his toe, he shouldn't have gone to ground. It looked very soft. In that crucial period a little bit went against us, and losing Joelinton went against us because I thought first half he played very well and gave us a physical presence that we obviously need.

"We sincerely hope that it isn't long term for Joelinton - he got a whack and he doesn't know if he's tweaked his groin, or what it is, but for him to come off it must be a sore one. We don't think it's serious.

"Fulham have had a good week and won a couple of games, which at the bottom end of the table is big, but there are a few of us, Brighton, Burnley and maybe Crystal Palace looking over their shoulders. I've enjoyed coming to Old Trafford and having a go, but I need a few results and I'm quietly confident we'll get the results.

"My message to the supporters is that I'm convinced we'll be OK."

  4. 'We have to keep plugging away'published at 21:26 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2021

    FT: Manchester United 3-1 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce, speaking to BBC Sport: "The second goal has had a bit of luck on it with the deflection, the first goal was against the run of play and Rashford didn't have to do much to score.

"I was very, very pleased for large parts of it but getting results is all that matters. Karl Darlow has been terrific for us, I haven't looked at it but a goalkeeper will always be disappointed to concede at his near post.

"Large parts I felt were very good. The change was when Joelinton went off as he gave us a physical presence. It was disappointing but that's our luck at the moment - losing centre forwards. We have to keep plugging away.

"Everyone near the bottom will be looking nervously over their shoulder. I've been saying for many years it is about the accumulation of points. We've been stuck on 25 points for a little while, we have to win a few games to get to that magic figure, whatever it it is."

  5. 'First half wasn't up to standard'published at 21:20 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2021

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "We had to find a way to win it in the second half. The first half wasn't up to the standard that we wanted, maybe because of Newcastle, maybe because of what we did in the week. We asked them to go again after a high-intensity game and it took us to half time to get our legs and energy.

"I'm delighted for Dan James. He has been so positive recently and working hard and he deserved his chance. I'm delighted when he scores goals because he's had his ups and downs.

"Marcus Rashford has been a forward his whole life, he's got quick feet. The first goal was a great strike after some dummies. He can still learn, he can still be so much better and that's the good thing with our team - there are so many young lads that we can make better.

"We've got to be there just in case, but every game is important. Every time we get three points we've done our job and that's what we've got to do and see what other teams do. The main thing is to get the ball in the net more than the opposition, and we're doing that, but there are games where we'll have to keep clean sheets."

  7. 'We had to step up and we did'published at 21:16 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2021

    FT: Manchester United 3-1 Newcastle

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, speaking to BBC Sport: "First half, even though we had most of the possession we didn't create enough. It is never easy to get going again, also with the season as it is. We had to step it up and we did in the second half.

"He [Daniel James] is working hard, he is a great boy in and around the place. He knows he has been very close a few times. When you score the amount of goals he has at the moment confidence must be sky high.

"Dan with the energy he has, the x factor and the pace, he gives us something that must be hard to play against if you are a defender."

On Shola Shoretire: "He is a boy we believe in. We wanted to give him a little taste of it. Of course the game was not done, still another six or seven minutes but he is a boy we believe in."

Momentum? "Just keep going. You have to be relentless. The season is a strange one but you have to build on confidence. We have to recover well in between and I am sure they will because when you win games you get energy."

  8. 'I was pleased with an hour'published at 21:15 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2021

    Manchester United 3-1 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce to BT Sport: "It's the second goal isn't it? A wicked deflection and a bit of luck and the third one, it's a very soft penalty. For 60 miuntes we gave as good as we got.

"We were disrupted when we lost Joelinton, it's difficult tro replace him but I was pleased with an hour. When you come here you've got to be good for 90 minutes. There were pleasing signs but you've got to turn pleasing signs into results.

"We'll have a look at the golkapeer, he will be disappointed to be beaten at the near post for the first goal. It's been a difficult week but we have games coming up where we think we can take points.

"We are a threat now, we are trying to be higher up the pitch. It will take some getting used to because we have played a certain way for a while.

"I am convinced we will be safe, there are six or seven teams looking over their shoulders. We need to win a few games. We have to get to that magical point mark - whatever it is."

  9. 'The gaffer trusts me'published at 21:09 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2021

    Manchester United 3-1 Newcastle

    Manchester United

Manchester United winger Daniel James to BBC Sport: "Every time I play I give my all, the gaffer trusts me and a lot of things I have been working on in training are coming off.

"I have been on the sidleines a lot but doing everything can to get back into the team. I am patient, you've got to be. What can you learn from when you are not playing? That's what I've done.

"We conceded a disappointing goal and came together at half-time, we knew the space would come down the side. We need to keep winning games and build from there."

  10. 'We have to be the best Man Utd in every game'published at 21:08 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2021

    FT: Manchester United 3-1 Newcastle

    Manchester United

    Ole Gunnar SolskjaerImage source, Reuters

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, speaking to BT Sport: "We had to up the tempo a little bit, especially in the last third and I felt we managed to do that. It is always difficult to get going after an away game in Europe. Even though we dominated possession and had a lot of the ball we couldn't create many opportunities. I felt in the second half we found our positions better."

On Daniel James: "He never disappeared. He has been working hard behind the scenes and always been available. He is always a player you can use in different areas with his energy and pace.

"We work with him, we try to help everyone but of course Dan came from the Championship, he hit a few goals in the first games and it is bound to take some energy from you. He has knuckled down and really worked to get back to full fitness but maybe more so confidence, to believe in himself.

"We can't control any other team, we just have to focus on ourselves and be the best possible Manchester United every game. Things happen and there are many surprises in football."

Rashford must learn to be more ruthless in shooting for goal. Too many twists and turns at times. And the penalty was harsh - he should have shot for goal and scored. It will cost Utd in games ahead.

Newcastle don't look like a team that could be relegated, not with the way that they played today or from what I've seen of them in the last couple of weeks.

There is character in the team. They are playing for Steve Bruce and I think that is what you look for, the body language of the players on the pitch and I did not see any issues today. Sometimes you have to hold your hand up and say 'we're playing Manchester United' - they had a really good go today, they fell short but they've pushed them.

Man Utd were lucky to get away with the points. Their game was crying out for something different. With two such talented youngsters on the bench in Amad and Sholatire, very disappointed they didn't get quality minutes to make an impact. Ole is very poor in his decision making, esp when it comes to subs.

Newcastle goalscorer Allan Saint-Maximin: "It's really disappointing because we were in the game in the first half. They scored quickly in the second half and the penalty was unlucky but that's football.

"I have just come back a few weeks ago and I want to give more assists and goals. It's good I scored but it's not enough and I need to keep going.

"We played against one of the best teams in the league, we know how difficult it is. We have the quality to win a game, you can see that against Everton, who beat Liverool. It's a crazy league."

Manchester United's Daniel James, speaking to BT Sport: "Very important win. After Thursday we just wanted to capitalise on that and I think we did well today.

"People say I haven't played so much recently but I am just working as hard as I can when I do play.

"It is a turnaround [for me]. There was a moment last season when I maybe was not performing as well as I wanted to do. I have just been working in the training ground as hard as I can. I kind of lost my way a bit. I have been working with the coaches to get me back to myself and I'd like to think I've got there now."

The victory is very important for Manchester United. It was a big game to make sure that they put themselves ahead of the chasing pack. There is a pack of teams that are desperately trying to pick up that fourth position and I can't wait to see how it plays out.

Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes (15 goals, 10 assists) is the third player within Europe's top five leagues this season to reach double figures for both goals and assists in league matches, alongside Harry Kane (13 goals, 11 assists) and Thomas Muller (10 goals, 10 assists).

There are huge positives for Newcastle to take from the game - the first half and the first five-10 minutes of the second half. But the quality that Manchester United possess on the break was just a little bit too much for United.

Steve Bruce will say that they've got a chance to stay up in the changing room. Well, not a chance, because they should stay up.
