What a start that would have been for Michael Carrick. McTominay should probably have done better.

John Challinor: So Olé goes but McFred stays. I could weep. Though at least Donny gets to start - hope he gets a run in the team.
Paul Garnett: Now is the time for the players to stand up and be accounted for... but if they do does it not also show that they just downed tools for Ole?

Chance!
Alex Telles delivers the free-kick into the box and it is just over Cristiano Ronaldo. Scott McTominay meets it at the back post but heads into the side-netting.

Anthony Martial is a selection that surprised me to be honest, we've seen so much of him over the years - I thought maybe his time was coming to an end, he's had so many chances. But a new manager has come in and worked with him in the background, he's probably been trying to gear him to stay positive and he's got the opportunity to send him out there.
Players have been listening to the likes of [Michael] Carrick in the dressing room because those coaches in the background are the ones that keep you focussed and make you feel like part of the squad. Suddenly they get the job and they believe in you and you can go out and work extra hard for them. I think Carrick will get a reaction from those players that have some trust in him.

Sounds like Donny van de Beek is getting an early bit of support from the Manchester United fans in this stadium.

It's an imposing ground - not just those in the bottom tier who are close to the pitch but even those in the top tier - they're right on top of you.
It makes it a touch more intimidating than you'd want it to be - it's a question of how you can handle that. It's not just the XI players on the pitch it's the 20,000 or so fans in the ground.

After that unexpected delay, the Michael Carrick Manchester United micro-era is under way.
Hold on, here's referee Felix Brych. Looks like we'll finally have a game of football to watch.
Pochettino has been heavily linked with the vacant Manchester United job and he is understood to be interested in the job.
Ironically the former Tottenham boss is in Manchester, with PSG set to face Manchester City on Wednesday night. He has just been asked about the vacancy in his pre-match press conference...
"I am focussed. I am very focussed on football. I am not a kid. I am not a child. I have spent all my life playing football and now coaching," Pochettino said.
"We are in a business where rumours are there. I completely understand what is going on, sometimes in a positive way, sometimes in a negative way. That type of thing can not distract. Rumours are there and we need to live with that.
"We are giving 100% to try and give the best to PSG and to the players to help them perform in the best ways. I am so happy at PSG and we are focussed on tomorrow and trying to get the best result that we can."
While we wait, here is what PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino had to say to the press this hour...
We're still waiting. They've tried a change of battery in the ref's communication device. Still not working.
We've got a bit of a delay to kick-off. Looks like the officials have got a communication problem with their ear pieces. Just to ramp up the tension and anticipation a bit.

What Scott McTominay and Fred do is sit in front of a back four and defend it - not go too far ahead and start being expansive and finding yourself in positions that are going to leave the back four exposed. This is a back four that is suffering at the moment, that has conceded goals and doesn't look like they've defended at all for the majority of the season.
Maybe they do need those defensive positions guarding in front of them.
It does take away from the top of the field if you've got someone with a better passing range but at the moment United are leaking goals. They're away in the Champions League and they can't really afford to lose this game so it's no surprise to see [Michael] Carrick adopt that tonight and go with the extra protection.

Carrick and Phelan are legends of the club, but if we were going to take the decision to get rid of Ole, we should have let them go too. Worrying to hear Carrick talk in his pre match press conference of sharing the same footballing philosophy as our footballing philosophy-less predecessor, who in 3 years never created a clear team identity on the pitch. If we're not willing to make wholesale changes as to how the team sets up, how different can the team really perform?

Manchester United are the favourites to qualify for the Champions League last-16 from Group F with 88% chance of doing so according to the Euro Club Index., external Avoiding defeat in his week's match in Spain is crucial for United's ease of progress to the knockout phase.
Here come the players. Time to strap yourself in. Judging by Manchester United's previous games in this Champions League, this should be very interesting.

Bruno Fernandes has created the most chances of any player (16) in the Champions League this season, and he could become only the second player to assist in five consecutive appearances in the competition for an English club, after David Beckham in November 1998, also for United.
If he gets on, that is.
Donny van de Beek starts in a competitive match for Man United for the first time since 22 September, when he was included in the starting line-up against West Ham United in the League Cup (1-0 home loss).
