We already know Manchester United are through to the last 16 courtesy of their win in Spain against Villarreal.

In United's group, Atalanta have taken the lead away to Young Boys through Duvan Zapata.

That's lifted the Italians into second spot in the group. United's final group game is against Young Boys at Old Trafford.

Elsewhere, Sevilla lead Wolfsburg in what is a wide open Group G where all four clubs can still advance.

Frederico Chiesa is so tidy I love watching him. He's so agile and good with his feet. The two young Chelsea players Reece James and Trevoh Chalobah have really got their work cut out tonight to keep him quiet.

Reece James is some footballer. Strong, smart, quick, technically excellent. He makes tackles, he sets goals up and he scores them too.

He's already looking to get forward down the right side for Chelsea.

It started with Michael Carrick's team selection. He picked players who he has probably been nurturing behind the scenes for a number of months and telling them to stay positive and the manager will select them.

Suddenly he gets the opportunity to take charge, selects them, and gives them a clear game-plan.

Because they believe in the new manager they play out of their skin.

Manchester United have contacted former Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde about the role of interim manager.

Valverde, 57, is one of a handful of potential candidates to take charge until the end of the season before United hire a permanent manager.

United are focusing on an interim boss to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

They feel recruiting Paris St-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino mmediately may not be as straightforward as has been reported.

It's tough when you are at a new team and there is a lot expected of you. You need to step up and deliver and it's not quite happening. The team is lacking in confidence and you're lacking in confidence.

Well today, Jadon Sancho created a number of opportunities and for me was the match-winner.

  14. 'A massive result for our season'published at 20:06 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2021

    Villarreal 0-2 Man Utd

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, speaking to BT Sport: "It's massive for our season. The last couple of months have been nowhere near good enough and we needed to get a result for our season and our fans. We need to make sure that's just the start and we push on.

"It was tough and edgy in the first half. It was important to stay in the game and I thought the lads who came off the bench really helped us push on and the second-half performance was really good.

"The emphasis was getting a result. Coming away from home in Europe you have to be solid. We got what we deserved in the end because of the chances we created.

"We want to be on the front foot and aggressive and in the first half maybe we played with too much fear. But we spoke about that and the first goal came from pressure.

"Ronaldo has been brilliant. We need to get back to being solid because if we do that we have every chance to win games when we have him up front."

    BT Sport

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand on BT Sport: "Managers that depart in the way Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did know there's going to be a bounce in the squad and something might happen.

"This performance was more about soaking up the pressure and it reminded me of when Ole first took charge before he had actually signed a contract and they went on that incredible run. I'm sure that on Saturday against Chelsea the performance will be a replica of that second-half performance."

    FT: Villarreal 0-2 Manchester United

    BT Sport

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes on BT Sport: "Michael Carrick will be really happy. I'm sure he'll be thinking about Chelsea on Sunday now that is out the way. It was a disciplined performance and a great win. It is a big bonus to go through the group with a game in hand."

  19. 'There is plenty to work with at Man Utd'published at 20:03 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2021

    FT: Villarreal 0-2 Man Utd

    Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Michael Carrick was very astute with his substitutions and the timing of them. He sensed the game was there to be taken. He made the changes and they really grew from that. They took their opportunities and have come away comfortable winners.

If any potential managers are looking at Manchester United, they will have been worried over the previous 10 or 12 games about whether the attitude is right within this team. They have seen that it is today.

There is plenty there to work with. These are a top, top bunch of players.
