It was all smiles for Italian pair Jorginho and Leonardo Bonucci at the coin toss and swapping of pendants before kick-off. Those two have fond memories of playing on the same pitch in this city.

I said five minutes into the game they are stopping Villarreal playing passes through the middle of the pitch and forcing them wide.

Suddenly, everyone knew their jobs. Suddenly, everyone was working really hard. You need everyone to stand up and be a part of that.

Thiago Silva has the best success rate of any player, since the start of last season, to have contested 20 or more aerial duels in the Champions League. In the Brazilian’s 12 appearances for the club in the competition, Chelsea have only conceded four goals (an average of 0.3 per game).

It's a job very well done for Manchester United. This was a team that came into this lacking with confidence. We weren't sure what the reaction would be. This looked like a team that believed in one another.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich will not attend the club's Champions League game at home to Juventus on Tuesday despite visiting Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The Russian billionaire visited the club for the first time since withdrawing a United Kingdom visa application in 2018 to host an event which was attended by Israeli president Isaac Herzog.

That led to fans anticipating the 55-year-old would see his team at Stamford Bridge but Abramovich has a prior commitment to a charity and will not be in the country on Tuesday.

The last Chelsea match that Abramovich attended was the Champions League final win over Manchester City in May, which was held in Porto.

It is understood he entered the UK using an Israeli passport after ongoing issues with his investor visa three years ago. A delay in renewing the document came amid increasing diplomatic tensions between London and Moscow.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel said of Abramovich on Monday: "He is in love with the game, he's in love with the details, he wants to know everything about what's going on at Cobham.

"And we keep him posted, because he has such a genuine interest and love for the game.

"If he's not here I know he will watch and follow us closely and so we put a show on a daily basis, and by putting on a show I mean hard work."

• Since beating Juventus in the first-ever meeting between the two clubs (1-0 in the Champions League in February 2009), Chelsea are winless in their past four games against the Italian side in European competition (drawn two, lost two).

• Juventus have won their past two games against Chelsea in European competition (3-0 in 2012 and 1-0 earlier this season), while they could become the first team to record three consecutive victories against Chelsea in the Champions League.

• Chelsea’s past 10 games against Italian opponents in the competition have seen the Blues record only one victory (drawn three, lost six), beating Napoli 4-1 in March 2012. They’ve failed to keep a clean sheet in all 10 games in this run, conceding 21 goals in total.

• Meanwhile, Juventus have won each of their past five games in the Champions League; the longest current run in the competition, along with Bayern Munich. A victory in this game would see the Old Lady establish a new club record for consecutive wins (six) in the European Cup/Champions League.

If anybody deserved a goal tonight it was that man - he's been outstanding.

Always been a threat and getting into good positions to make something happen with the ball. That was a team goal - Fred wins the ball back and it was clinical, crisp, it was unselfish. Cristiano Ronaldo into Marcus Rashford, who you think could go through on his own, but he squares it to Bruno Fernandes who opens his body up to allow Sancho to get onto it.

Three players you wouldn't expect to pass on that situation!

Man Utd have played the percentages tonight. Give as little away as they can and rely on a stellar forward line to take a chance. Nothing wrong with keeping it simple. What do they say? Back to basics and all that.
