    Villarreal 0-1 Man Utd

Cristiano Ronaldo is nearly in again. He anticipates that a ball to the back stick will beat the defence, but his touch to send the ball around the Villarreal keeper doesn't send it goalwards.

Soon after, Marcus Rashford's shot from close range is pushed behind by Geronimo Rulli.

    Villarreal 0-1 Man Utd

For those keen on context, we probably do need to say that Villarreal are a team that this expensively-assembled Man Utd team should beat. They are 12th in La Liga. But considering the last few days, I think Manchester United would have snapped your hand off for scrappy 1-0 win with David de Gea probably their best player.

We come to expect this type of finish from Cristiano Ronaldo - it's magnificent.

When you play from an organised shape and organised position like United have done tonight this is the benefit you get. They pressed as a team - they stopped simple passes that usually go into the wide areas when they don't do that. All evening they have played as a unit. The ball goes to Etienne Capoue, Fred presses and wins the ball back and Ronaldo turns and in one movement loops it over the keeper.

Terrific finish, but it comes from a really good pressing structure from United.

Fair play to Michael Carrick. His changes have definitely helped swing the momentum of the game.

It has not been pretty. In fact, it's been pretty dull for the most part. But this is now starting to look like a decent away display. Goals eh. They don't half change things.

Manchester United are 10 minutes away from qualifying for the last 16.

    Cristiano Ronaldo

    It's him again!

The finish is all Cristiano Ronaldo's. A chip over the advancing keeper. But just as much credit must got to the much-maligned Fred, who closes down Etienne Capoue following a short goal-kick and won the ball to send it to his forward.

Fernandes offers Villarreal a completely different kind of problem to what they've had to deal with so far. Suddenly, the United forwards are more in the game because of his ability pick a forward pass.

After playing Villarreal in the final I really thought this season's Utd would push on. Now we're holding on for a draw, Fred is still playing and Carrick is in charge..... Where's the progress in that?

    Si, Scunthorpe

Can see clearly why Ole never played Van de Beek... Bruno has been miles more effective in the 5 minutes he's been on.

Comfortably Manchester United's best spell this.

Marcus Rashford latches on to the ball in the box but his low cross is cut out before it can reach Bruno Fernandes.

Villarreal freshen things up in attack with Samuel Chukwueze replacing Yeremi Pino. Alberto Moreno is also on for Manu Trigueros.

That was top quality all round - it had me off my seat, I was half way in the air! That would've been a wonderful goal all around from United.

The movement, the sharpness and the change of speed from Jadon Sanch in particular - he realises he has an opportunity to get in. Top quality play but a really good save.

Best chance for Manchester United by far!

Bruno Fernandes finds Jadon Sancho on the run into the box. He beats a man in front of him but sees his shot saved by Geronimo Rulli.

They've sat back for 70 minutes but now all of sudden, United are looking forward.

It's one thing picking the team but does Carrick have the ability to change things if it's not working?

De gea should have gotten his Madrid move long ago, he belongs in the spanish league where his attributes are acknowledged. He would have won allot by now.

Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford are already making a difference. Manchester United seeing a bit more of the ball in Villarreal territory.

The ball is floated over the top for Marcus Rashford, who looks miles off but is encouraged by the assistant's flag staying down. He can't beat the keeper, though, and up goes that flag.

No surprise with either of those substitutions - both those players have lacked game time. The question for me was should he bring on Jesse Lingard? He can play from a good structure and break from midfield, he likes to counterattack - they're the kind of runs that may be needed.

But you also need someone who can play some passes and with Bruno Fernandes there now they should have someone.

More boos for Cristiano Ronaldo as he goes down easily following a challenge. He's barely been in the game, especially in this second-half. It only takes a second, though.

    Dynamo Kyiv 1-2 Bayern Munich

Dynamo Kyiv have their first goal in this season's Champions League.

Bayern Munich have been pretty average in the second half and they pay the price as Denys Harmash slots home nicely after being thread through by Viktor Tsyhankov.

    Game on.

  19. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 67 mins

Donny van de Beek and Anthony Martial depart. Not sure either have done much to advance their cause.

    Over the bar!

The ball is fed to the left side of the box for Arnaut Danjuma, but he lifts his effort a yard or two too high.

Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes are stripped and ready for action. Time to get out of first gear.
