It's more than 1,700km from Lisbon to Manchester, which is a long way to travel - especially when your side is 5-0 down from the first leg. A few hundred hardy Sporting fans have made the trip though, decked head to toe in green and white stripes, and they have already made a bit of noise when their team's goalkeepers ran out for their warm-up.

They might have been dreaming of a miraculous comeback when they set off from Portugal but they would probably settle for not breaking an unwanted record their club already owns...

Sporting suffered the heaviest aggregate defeat of any knockout tie in the Champions League era when they lost 12-1 to Bayern Munich in the last 16 in 2009. Bayern won 5-0 away and 7-1 at home, so Manchester City are already halfway there.

I was walking to the ground this afternoon thinking about the atmosphere inside the stadium.

When you first run out it is an incredible feeling because it is so vast and so vertical - you feel so small. But when you get on and start playing you feel so big because you have all the crowd behind you.

When you are playing at Real Madrid you need personality and character - even if the fans boo you.

You are always going to make mistakes but you have to be not frightened to make mistakes.

    Manchester City

No side has ever recovered from a five-goal first leg deficit in the Champions League.

That is what Sporting Lisbon must do tonight to progress and they come up against a Manchester City side who reached the final last season.

Pep Guardiola insists the tie is not over though.

"Football is unpredictable in many cases - [there] can be red cards, can be distractions or the qualities of the opponent and that's why we will take a top side as much as possible."

Pressure always comes in the Champions League. Real Madrid are front runners in the league but this is the competition they want to win. Carlo Ancelotti will come under pressure.

Every manager that comes to this football club needs to win the Champions League. That is what they want to do every year.

Is Neymar past his best? Is Vinicius Junior the man to step up and become Brazil's star striker?

In an interview aired by DAZN in October, Neymar said he sees this year's World Cup as "his last one", stating he doesn't know if he has "the strength of mind to deal with football any more".

Only a few months earlier, he had been celebrating a contract renewal until 2025 with PSG.

Such interviews have bolstered the impression that, despite having only recently turned 30, Neymar may be already past his best and not enjoying football as much as he once did.

With Real sensation Vinicius in the form of his life, having netted 16 goals this season, there is a growing belief that he might be on the way to taking over from Neymar as Brazil's leading man in Europe.

It is a massive game there is no getting away from that. If you look at their respective leagues, they are both top by a vast amount of points, but this is what counts. The Champions League.

It is huge for both teams and both managers.

Kyle Walker's red card in City's final group match against RB Leipzig means he is suspended for this tie.

Oleksandr Zinchenko steps up in his place, despite the Ukraine international having been badly affected by Russia's invasion of his country.

Pep Guardiola said earlier this week: "He is ready. Of course it is not an easy period for him, absolutely not, but I think he will be ready just in case he has to play."

Robert Lewandowski scored a hat-trick inside the opening 23 minutes as Bayern Munich thrashed Red Bull Salzburg to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

Lewandowski was making his 100th appearance in the competition and it was the first time a Champions League hat-trick had been completed as early as the 23rd minute.

The quickest treble in the competition was scored by Bafetimbi Gomis in eight minutes for Lyon in a 7-1 win over Dinamo Zagreb in 2011.

Bayern also won 7-1 last night. Read the report here.

Meanwhile, Liverpool qualified with a 2-1 victory on aggregate over Inter Milan despite losing at home in the second leg.

An outstanding finish by Lautaro Martinez was not enough for the Italian champions as the late goals by Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah in the first leg in Milan three weeks ago proved decisive. Read the report here.

  17. Full team news - Egan-Riley comes into Man City defencepublished at 18:59 Greenwich Mean Time 9 March 2022

Man City v Sporting (20:00 GMT)

    BBC Sport at Etihad Stadium

Manchester City make six changes from the side that thumped neighbours Manchester United here on Sunday.

With Kyle Walker suspended, 19-year-old defender Conrad Egan-Riley is called up for only his second senior start - his first was against Wycombe in the Carabao Cup in September. He or John Stones could play at centre-half or right-back - we will have to wait and see.

Ukraine international Oleksandr Zinchenko comes in at left-back to replace Joao Cancelo, who is ill, while Fernandinho and Ilkay Gundogan are back in midfield and Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus return up front.

Kevin de Bruyne, who is one booking away from a suspension in the Champions League, drops to the bench, as do Rodri, Riyad Mahrez and Jack Grealish. There are six more City academy products among the substitutes.

Man City XI: Ederson, Egan-Riley, Stones, Laporte, Zinchenko, Fernandinho, Gundogan, Bernardo, Sterling, Foden, Jesus

Subs: Carson, Slicker, Grealish, Rodri, De Bruyne, Mahrez, Kayky, Delap, Edozie, Mbete, McAtee

I'm still 'so angry' with Kyle Walker over red card - Guardiola

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said he was still "so angry" with Kyle Walker following his red card at RB Leipzig.

City had already qualified for the last 16 when Walker's 82nd-minute kick at Andre Silva incurred a three-match ban.

"When a player does a stupid thing, he deserves to be banned for three games," said Guardiola.

"I'm not so kind to Kyle in this kind of action. I'm still so angry with him. It's not necessary to discuss [it] with him.

"Kyle is so important for us but in Leipzig when we had already qualified, 80 minutes in, and he made this kind of action? He deserves the three games."
