Have you ever seen an England team manage out a game as well as we did last night. Pass after pass to run the clock down. No silly mistakes, just calm heads moments from victory.

Keith Trudgeon: As one of the generation that has experienced every single one of the 55 years of hurt - first vivid memories are of the 1970 World Cup, just too young to remember 1966 - last night was poignant. I might have had something in my eye.

Coincidently there might have been a fair few with things in their eyes, Keith. How strange.

Raheem Sterling’s primary school teacher says watching him play gives her "immense pride".

Rebekah Akonor taught Sterling in Year 6 at Oakington Manor where he wrote in his yearbook: "My two years at Oakington Manor have been enjoyable. I've played in several football tournaments and become a legend at football, cricket and even tag rugby."

Ms Akonor told 5 Live’s Adrian Chiles all the staff "knew he was going to be a star from the minute he graced our school with his presence"."He was that driven, that focussed," she added, "he was very clear in ‘I want to be able to play at Wembley’, and those dreams obviously came true for him."

    England 2-1 Denmark

For a moment it seemed like things were going Denmark's way last night. What a tournament Mikkel Damsgaard has had. I'm sure there will be a few clubs with an eye on the 21-year-old Sampdoria star.

Now that England got the job done we can all applaud his dipper of a strike.

Nothing mentioned about diving or cheating. England should hang their heads in shame. Disgraceful diver Sterling is and Kane isn't much better. Couldn't even beat Scotland and in the final mostly all played at home farcical.

They'd put Chiellini, Bonucci and Verratti to shame.

Listen, by my reckoning Italy owe us one! We let them have the Eurovision song contest - they let us have the Euros, only fair.

  17. On this day...published at 16:19 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

On this day in 2012 Roberto Mancini agreed a new five-year contract with Manchester City. The new deal came after the Italian had guided the club to their first top-flight title in 68 years, sealed on a dramatic final day of the 2011-12 Premier League season as Sergio Aguero's late winner against QPR saw them pip neighbours Manchester United.

Nine years on he's leading Italy into battle against England.

    Funny old game.

  20. Jordan 'Speedy' Pickfordpublished at 16:07 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

    England 2-1 Denmark

Jordan Pickford's former PE teacher, Alan Fisher, has suggested his erratic nature has helped his game, and admits he saw it even when the England goalkeeper was a student.

"He was 'Speedy'. That was his nickname and it's stuck with him. He wanted to do everything at 100mph - and he still does," Mr Fisher told the Press Association.

"Last night, I can remember Gareth Southgate shouting across to him, 'Cool down slow down a little bit'.

"He gets into the moment and probably that's a good thing being a goalkeeper. You want to be on that edge, you want to maybe be walking that fine edge of being in control and just being a little bit out of control. "In terms of reactions and reading the game and things like that, you've got to be on your toes, and I think 'Speedy' is probably an apt name for him because he does it that way.

"But also, I've seen a more mature Jordan in these championships, and I've seen a more mature Jordan at Everton as well."
