  4. 'I'm so, so proud of him'published at 09:56 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

    England 2-1 Denmark

Tony Adams, who captained England at Euro 96, said he was "proud" of Gareth Southgate after he went from missing a penalty in the semi-final defeat by Germany 25 years ago, to leading the Three Lions to their first major tournament final since 1966.

"I'm very proud of him, proud of all the guys to be honest with you," Adams told Good Morning Britain.

"Yeah, 25 years ago I led my country, we got to the semi-final, got close, we went out on penalties and it's great to see Gareth there (winning at Wembley). I'm so, so proud of him.

"Weirdly I texted him the other day, to say congratulations, because I felt so proud to be his pal. He came back with a beautiful answer. He said 'Thank God my mum and dad don't have to put up with all that pain anymore'.

"He was more concerned about his family - the amount of stick they've taken down the years - that they actually can put it behind them and forget that.

"And he's making a new story, making a new path for these new young players. Most of them weren't born when he missed that penalty."

  6. Shearer explains letter to Southgatepublished at 09:49 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

    England 2-1 Denmark

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

Alan Shearer wrote an open letter to Gareth Southgate talking to him about happened 25 years ago at Euro 96 and explained why he did so on BBC Breakfast this morning.

"When Gareth did an interview after one of the games it was obvious that he was still carrying the wounds of 96 with his penalty miss but there is no way he should have because no one has ever blamed him for that, he played a part in our huge success. We should have won it in the 90 minutes or even the golden goal time, so, not one of our squad or our team held anything against Gareth for that. So, I just felt that it was important that he knew that and could just let it go.

"He's more than made up for that this month, he's given everyone a bit of hope and something to cling onto because it's been such a difficult 18 months for everyone.

"We've all got our fingers crossed that England can go on and win this competition but whatever happens on Sunday he should feel very, very proud of what him and his team have given us this month because they have given us so much joy, so much happiness and so much excitement."

The JV-Tossh: As a Dane, England was the better team, but the fact that you also needed luck to get past a team that was exhausted should be a warning sign for Italy. Honestly thinking Pickford might be a liability, easily your worst player yesterday.

  9. 'What a night, what an atmosphere'published at 09:23 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

    England 2-1 Denmark

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

Former England striker Alan Shearer was on BBC Breakfast this morning.

"I think I got in about 4 O'Clock in the morning back to Newcastle but it doesn't matter because it was worth it.

"What a night, what an atmosphere, it was just an amazing time. We said before a ball was kicked at this tournament that hopefully this England team can give us something to smile about, something to hope, something to cling onto, some excitement but my goodness have they done all of that. What a month it's been for us.

"These guys have done better then what we did in 1996, they've achieved something that not many people have. Those were great times but ultimately we got knocked out in the semi-final on penalties. I thought it was going to go to penalties last night too, but thankfully it didn't for the sake of everyone's nerves because it easier being a footballer on the pitch then it is a supporter in the stands.

"I was stood in the stands with Gary Lineker and Jurgen Klinsmann and the three of us were saying how terrible it is as a fan, it's so nerve wracking you can't do anything about it. At least as a player you are on the pitch and can control things, we were as nervous as everyone in that stadium and all the millions at home watching TV."

  10. 'I don't think he believed us to start with'published at 09:18 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Two of the England fans at the game last night were nine-year-old Mason and his dad Jamie, who surprised him with tickets before school yesterday.

Jamie told BBC Radio 5 Live's Chris Warburton he didn't want to give Mason the tickets until he had received his coronavirus test results and knew they could definitely go.

"We just dropped the tickets on him. I don't think he believed us to start with," he said.

Mason said he was "absolutely shocked".

"I'd never been to Wembley before," he said.

Listen to 5 Live on BBC Sounds for more reaction.
