Lineker opener Sunday? The Romans built a wall here in AD122....it lies in ruins, on Sunday the Emperor Mancini will build another.... it's time to break it down again (Break it down again - Tears for fears).

  2. 'The team spirit of the players is brilliant'published at 12:13 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

    England 2-1 Denmark

Former England manager Sam Allardyce has praised Gareth Southgate for the way he has managed his squad throughout the tournament.

He told Good Morning Britain: "I think we all felt before we went into the tournament that the young squad that Gareth has got - not only the first XI but the strength and depth of his squad - was outstanding. And it's proven to be the case.

"I think that what he's done is managed 26 players exceptionally well, kept them all on the same path.

"The spirit is everything when you go into a tournament, into any football club. The team spirit of the players is brilliant, you can see that, the joy of being together. And I think that he's used that squad to its full potential. He's made changes nearly every game.

"And he's got one thing that's looking like it's the solid base they can win this tournament on and that is a fantastic defensive record. Just one goal conceded in the whole tournament up to now - and that was a pretty good free-kick last night."

End this penalty conversation now please, it happened, get over it. If it hadn't stood we would have scored by other means, we were so dominant by that stage in the game, nobody would say differently.

  5. 'We've got the ability to beat Italy' - Keownpublished at 12:00 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

    England 2-1 Denmark

    Martin Keown
Former England defender on BBC One

More from Martin Keown on BBC Breakfast who says that what England are achieving needs to be celebrated and that they do have the ability to beat this very good Italian side.

"It is quite phenomenal what we are doing, if you look at all of the decisions that Gareth Southgate has made, with Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson not even being fit before the tournament and now playing pivotal roles in the competition.

"He started the first game with left-back in the shape of Kieran Trippier who is a right footed full-back. So, every decision is has been magnificent.

"The front players, there are so many options with Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka, Jack Grealish and Mason Mount, we able are able to bring on those at just the right time for that energy we need.

"I see a group of players that are very grounded trying to win something and are reunited with the public again and it's beautiful to see 60,000 people in that stadium last night, that togetherness is unifying the country.

"We need to celebrate what they are achieving, it's been far too long. This is for the next generation now, any young people watching this, tune in and enjoy it.

"Fingers crossed we can do it but this is a very good Italian team make no mistake about that but we've got the ability to be able to beat them."

Let's hear from former England and Arsenal defender Martin Keown now who was talking to BBC Breakfast.

"We've been downcast in previous competitions when England have gone out but now the euphoria of making it to the final is almost hard to deal with.

"So, we're just keeping calm now and getting our breath back from last night and looking forward to a fantastic final.

"I'm always expecting the unexpected, something to always go wrong in an England shirt. It always seems to come down to a penalty and when Harry Kane stood up to take it I thought brilliant he never misses and then suddenly the goalkeeper saves it but then we get another chance and Harry just tucks it away beautifully. That was a massive moment, you could feel the whole country breathe again, time stood still there just for those few seconds.

"As a former player, in our generation we didn't get to achieve what they're achieving. We're so proud of this next generation, what they are doing.

"Gareth Southgate one of my former colleagues has been incredible with how calm he is and the way he has navigated the team. He should be running the country never mind running the football team, he's been quite brilliant and I hope that he comes up with all of the right answers against a very difficult, tricky opponent in Italy."

Danish media focused on national pride not bitterness after their defeat by England.

"Let the national team be embittered over the semi-final defeat. The rest of us just have to be grateful for the experiences - and for the prospect of a golden future," read a commentary in daily Jyllands Posten.

Ekstra-Bladet sports editor Allan Olsen paid a heartfelt tribute to the team.

"Goodbye, Euros - but from here just a THANK YOU!...," he wrote. "To the national team for being the backdrop for a formidable summer, where the Danes broke out of the corona isolation and partied with [coach Kasper] Hjulmand's boys. THANK YOU FOR BEING the cohesive force of the country for a month, for sharing an incomparable unity, joy - and a nice amount of parties all over the country. Thanks for a magical final round."

Sports journalist Carsten Werge tweeted: "Why is Denmark the real European Championship winner? Because Christian Eriksen survived. That means far more than a finale place and a trophy.

  11. 'England will have to be wary of Italy'published at 11:09 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

    England 2-1 Denmark

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

More from Alan Shearer who looks ahead to the final on Sunday against Italy.

"The final is going to be an incredibly tight game because Italy are superb opposition.

"They haven't lost for 33 games and for whatever standard of football you are playing in, that is impressive.

"We've watched them live a few times this tournament and they like England have a great togetherness.

"They've got pace on either side of the wings and have two giant defenders in Bonucci and Chiellini, very experienced and despite their age they still played the extra-time for Italy the other night, Bonucci even took a penalty.

"We'll have to be very wary. It's such a tough one to call. There will be space in behind because Italy do play a high line, so, I would hope and expect very much like last night Raheem Sterling was just incredible, what a performance. It was a brilliant team performance but I think Raheem Sterling was absolutely magnificent, so, he could have a little bit of joy down the sides of the Italian defence."

I was at the semi-final in 96 - and was there last night. Finally, I woke up this morning and the 'bitter taste' had left my mouth. It felt like we were totally in control last night - apart from a mad 15 mins when they scored. I have never been this confident about an England team.

    England 2-1 Denmark

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Former England manager Steve McClaren has said England's key to winning is "weighing teams down".

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live’s Adrian Chiles, he said Denmark had "gone" after the first hour because "they had done so much running".

"Physically, we’re so strong. The last 30 minutes and extra time we looked as if we’d just started the game. We were so full of power and energy, Denmark couldn’t cope with it.

“Nobody can live with England physically," he added. "The Italians maybe can, but I think they will be vulnerable now."

England's long, painful wait for a second major tournament final is over.

Fifty-five years ago, the country achieved its finest football moment by winning the World Cup on home soil.

Since then, managers have been hired and fired, players picked and dropped, games won and lost, but the quest for another big showdown has always ended in failure until the arrival of Gareth Southgate and his squad at Euro 2020.

Now that the wait is over, BBC Sport has looked back at the players, managers, miles and more that England have put in to reach their second notable international final.

  17. 'I never doubted Harry for one moment'published at 10:29 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

    England 2-1 Denmark

Former England striker Teddy Sheringham said he never doubted current Three Lions number nine Harry Kane.

Kane failed to score in England's three group games but has now scored four goals in three knockout matches.

"First of all I never doubted Harry for one moment," he told talkSPORT.

"He is the leader, he knows he is good and it is very hard to tell people in the newspapers 'yeah I'm good, I am the best centre-forward in the world' without being a flash git.

"But he is saying it in a way where he knows he is good, in fact he is better than that, he is great, and he knew it would come. And very much like Alan Shearer when we were in Euro 96.

"He was the best centre-forward, you knew he would play and you can't take him out because if half a chance comes on the pitch, you want him there."

  19. 'It's worth the hangover!'published at 10:17 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

    England 2-1 Denmark

BBC News North of England Reporter Rowan Bridge has been catching up with England fans in Manchester city centre this morning.

Dave Brown said: "I’m 43 years old. I’ve been waiting for it all my life. It’s the best feeling as a football fan I’ve ever had. I didn’t worry at all, even when Denmark went one-nil up, because I had the faith in the team."

You had to get up at 4.30am this morning, was it worth it being this tired?

"I’m not tired, just hungover! It’s worth the hangover. It comes once in 55 years you know, that’s it!"

Susan Rhodes had to get up at 4.00am this morning for her job at Manchester Eye Hospital. She didn’t go to bed until 11pm but says it was worth it.

“There are such things as coffee, coffee and coffee all day." She said.

Even when it went to extra time she couldn’t face going to bed.

"I would have just have been awake so it was just a case of go with the flow, it doesn’t happen very often. It’s amazing, I’m extremely proud of Gareth and the boys, they did an absolutely fantastic job.

"It’s brought the country together after an horrendous 18 months. The sun is shining, England are through their first final since 1966 and it’s just an amazing feeling."

  20. England 'fortunate' to get penaltypublished at 10:13 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

    England 2-1 Denmark

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Former England winger Chris Waddle admits every side needs some fortune to win a major trophy and he feels England got lucky with the penalty last night.

"No one wins a tournament with brilliant performances and no luck," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"I have to say we were very fortunate to get it. There must have been the slightest of contact. We talk about VAR but the referee didn't even have a look at it.

"We have to win it now, it's feet back on the ground this morning. Everyone enjoyed it last night but now we have to come up against one of the most experienced teams in world football in Italy.

"It will be more difficult than last night."
