Peter Reid has been speaking about the England players after their heroics against Denmark.

"The players have been magnificent, the crowd's magnificent. They've just got to go and win it now," he told Good Morning Britain.

"There's pressure on them, being at home, massive pressure, and they've handled it.

"Besides being good footballers doing their jobs - determination, ability, they've got a spirit among them which I love. And the manager fosters that, and the staff."

Nick: Never been more heartbroken after a football match than the semi-final defeat to Croatia three years ago, as I never thought an opportunity like this would arise again. Now I've never been more prouder of an England team.

What a difference three years makes eh Nick.

  3. 'Italy will be tough'published at 08:41 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

    England 2-1 Denmark

    Peter Shilton
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Looking ahead then and Peter Shilton says the final against Italy will be a tough one for England and that they must be careful:

"It's going to be tough, the Italians are notoriously difficult to beat but at home with the crowd behind us, we want to win it desperately.

"It's all about taking your chances and little moments in the game that go for you. I think that has been one thing that has been evident, we have been having those little breaks and luck at the right time which you need and hopefully we'll continue that because against Italy we'll need it.

"We've got to be careful we don't get sucked into press, press, press, trying to get a goal and then suddenly they catch us on the break because that's what they are good at."

  4. 'The manager has been absolutely outstanding'published at 08:34 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

    Peter Reid

"The manager has been absolutely outstanding. He's had pressure on him and stuck to his guns.

"First of all, (Southgate) was working with the Under-21s so he's known some of these lads for a long time. And what he's done is made out national team into like a club side in spirit."

  6. Shilton on Pickford's performancepublished at 08:25 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

    England 2-1 Denmark

    Peter Shilton
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Former England goalkeeper and record caps holder Peter Shilton has been reflecting on Jordan Pickford's performance last night.

"He didn't look quite assured as he has done but it's not a criticism. A couple of distributions early on could have resulted in goals but he made a terrific save in the second half and has done in the tournament.

"As a keeper you can be remembered sometimes for things that have gone wrong and not for the all the good things but they're in the final and hopefully he can keep another clean sheet."

  8. 'Southgate has proven me and a lot of people wrong'published at 08:14 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

    England 2-1 Denmark

    Peter Shilton
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Former England goalkeeper and record caps holder Peter Shilton has been looking back at last night's game:

"I watched it on TV and like everybody else in the country, just so ecstatic at getting the result, it was just incredible.

"Since the last 18 months with Covid I think people are in a little disbelief that we've made it to the final after so long but a great achievement by the boys, I thought they deserved it.

"Denmark are a good side, Kasper Schmeichel made terrific saves to keep them in it, on chances we deserved it. The penalty may have been a little soft but you get these things sometimes, we've had bad luck in the past. I remember in 1990 we hit the post in extra time and we would have been in the final but those are the sort of bits of luck that you need.

"When Gareth Southgate took over I wasn't sure his credentials matched the job but he's proven me and a lot of people wrong. He's grown into the job, been very steady and set out principles."

I want this trophy more for Southgate than anything. His words at the end of the Germany game shows he still carries that Euro 96 semi-final Euro penalty miss with him every day and since then he's picked himself up and lead us to three semi-finals and first final in 55 years... What a comeback!

    England 2-1 Denmark

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

England manager Gareth Southgate was the model of restraint and calm until he reached the vast bank of supporters gathered at one end of Wembley belting out their new anthem Sweet Caroline with glorious, noisy abandon.

The noise hit Southgate. The emotion hit Southgate. And maybe the history he and his England players had just made hit Southgate.

The wait was over. The sweet release of 55 years of England's men's football teams coming up short was pouring out in a frenzied, celebratory cacophony after the nerve-shredding tension then joy of the Euro 2020 semi-final win over Denmark after extra time.

  16. Kane edges England throughpublished at 07:11 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

    England 2-1 Denmark

In case you missed it last night (if so, where were you?), England fell behind thanks to Mikkel Damsgaard's stunning free-kick after 30 minutes - the first goal the Three Lions have conceded in the tournament.

England were level nine minutes later when Denmark captain Simon Kjaer turned in Bukayo Saka's threatening cross six minutes before the break.

Kasper Schmeichel was Denmark's hero as he saved brilliantly from Harry Maguire and Harry Kane as the game went into extra time.

The game's pivotal moment arrived on 103 minutes when Raheem Sterling was fouled by Joakim Maehle in the box.

Kane's penalty was saved by Schmeichel, but the Tottenham striker was on hand to fire home the rebound.
