It's going to be a difficult watch on Sunday evening. I met my Italian wife after the Euro 80 game in Turin, when England lost 1-0. Heaven knows, I've waited so long for revenge. But don't tell the wife!

Pregnant with my first baby (a boy) and due date is tomorrow. Torn between trying to encourage him out ahead of Sunday or seeing if I can hang on in there to get to the final. He's been a fairly high performing good luck charm in utero so far.

He's waited nine months. Surely he can hold out for another couple of days?

Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline, a song written more than 50 years ago about the daughter of a former US president, has become the unofficial anthem of the England team at Euro 2020.

It is now getting such a huge raucous reaction, news of its popularity has even reached 80-year-old Diamond himself, who told The Telegraph he was "thrilled" at the scenes. He also sent a good luck message to the players before Wednesday's semi-final.

  8. Russia boss sacked...published at 15:47 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

Russia's manager Stanislav Cherchesov has been sacked after the country finished bottom of Group B with just three points.

He came under particular fire after Russia's limp 3-0 defeat to Belgium in the group stage, when many Russians asked why he was being paid 2.5m euros a year, reportedly around twice as much as Belgian coach Roberto Martinez.

He also attracted criticism for remarks targeted at journalists who criticised his side's style of play.

"There are officers at the army HQ, and there are field commanders. I feel like a field commander. Some people fight wars, and others talk about wars. You do need to listen to experts, but a commander at the military HQ knows less than one in the field," he said at a press conference after Russia's exit from the tournament.

Cherchesov had been in charge since August 2016 and led his country to a quarter final in the 2018 World Cup after unexpectedly beating Spain on penalties in the last 16.

His contract was due to run out at the end of 2022, but head of the Russian Football Union Alexander Dyukov announced today that the search would begin for a manager to prepare Russia for its upcoming World Cup qualifiers in September against Croatia, Cyprus and Malta.

This just dropped on our picture wires and it's made things a little serious.

    It's on.

Someone go tell the lads and lasses in Venice and Ancona that it's on.

Yeah your weather is better. Yeah you have better ice cream.

But we've got Kendal Mint Cake, Bukayo Saka and gravy.

    As I said... it's on.

  12. 'He’s stuck to his guns'published at 15:35 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

    England 2-1 Denmark

England rugby union head coach Eddie Jones has praised his football counterpart Gareth Southgate.

“The thing that has impressed me most about Gareth is his selection," said Jones.

“He’s copped a lot of criticism but he’s stuck to his guns, he’s been very firm in what he thinks is the best team to play, and he’s been proved 100% right.

“I think he’s been very strong because the media here likes to select teams and they have favourites they like to push, and he has been very strong in sticking to his guns and I think it is a great example to every coach.”

England manager Gareth Southgate was the model of restraint and calm until he reached the vast bank of supporters gathered at one end of Wembley belting out their new anthem Sweet Caroline with glorious, noisy abandon.

The noise hit Southgate. The emotion hit Southgate. And maybe the history he and his England players had just made hit Southgate.

The wait was over. The sweet release of 55 years of England's men's football teams coming up short was pouring out in a frenzied, celebratory cacophony after the nerve-shredding tension then joy of the Euro 2020 semi-final win over Denmark after extra time.

Darren Anderton there in that last entry. His effort that struck the upright against Germany in 1996 will go in one day if I keep watching it, as will Gazza's stretch in the six yard box. One day they go in... I'm convinced of it.

  16. 'It should be a great final'published at 15:21 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

    England 2-1 Denmark

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Former England midfielder Darren Anderton, who played in that Euro 96 semi-final defeat against Germany, praised England's character after they fought back from a goal down.

"Denmark started the game really well, they were very impressive. But once we equalised, I think there was only one team that was going to win the game and that was us," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"The Germany game was a huge one for (Southgate). He spoke about that quite openly, which of course he would do. But this was the one, a semi-final, to get to a final, at Wembley again. He must have been feeling confident; they were obviously the stronger team and the Danes were out on their feet.

"Let’s take it and enjoy it. The boys showed great character to come back from the goal behind and they’ve done it all so far in this tournament. It should be a great final on Sunday."

England fan Alex Smith has told BBC Radio 5 Live he will get a tattoo of Jack Grealish on his bottom if he scores the winner on Sunday.

The West Brom fan already has one of Gareth Southgate on there.

Despite Grealish playing for West Brom rivals Aston Villa, Alex told fellow Baggies fan Adrian Chiles: "You can’t hate Jack Grealish when he’s in an England shirt."

Adrian promised to send Southgate a photo of the tattoo.

“He might be able to use it in his team talk,” said Adrian.
