  5. England penalty 'generous' - Verrattipublished at 14:34 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

    England 2-1 Denmark

Italy midfielder Marco Verratti described England’s penalty against Denmark as “a bit generous” - though he also felt England deserved to win and set up an “epic final”.

"Perhaps it was a bit of a generous penalty, but it is part of the picture in football. I think it was a bit of a generous penalty,” said Verratti, 28.

"I think England did a great job. They got to the final for the first time and this says a lot.

"They conceded only one goal, so it is a very solid team, great players, a very balanced team and I think they did deserve to get to the final.

"I'm happy we will be playing them in a great stadium, it's going to be a great final. It's the dream you have as a kid, as a footballer.

"We're happy England won and now it's all down to the final, which I think will be an epic final, and history-making either way."

According to overnight figures, last night's game brought an average audience of 23.86m.

It was the most watched non-news event since England's World Cup exit against Croatia in 2018 which was watched by 24.3m.

When England won the World Cup in 1966, 32.3m tuned in. Wonder if that viewing record will be broken on Sunday?

  10. 'They never gave up'published at 13:42 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

    England 2-1 Denmark

Former England international Trevor Steven was always confident about the game even when Denmark took the lead.

“I was a little bit more calm and relaxed about this game," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"The game was a lot tighter than I thought it was going to be, but the emotion was an expectancy. I thought England were going to do it. The nation has got a belief in this group of players, led by a terrific manager. They never gave up, they keep going and they’ve got a really great level of talent, quality and togetherness.

“We didn’t play as well as we can. Man for man, nobody had their best game of the tournament. But the collective, the way it works, the understanding and the ability Gareth (Southgate) has to bring talent on from the bench meant our level was really high. We have the mental strength to draw on those resources.

“When that terrific (Mikkel) Damsgaard free kick went in, I wasn’t panic-stricken. There was plenty of time left and I thought if we got one, we’d go on and win it.

“It proved to be the case albeit the way we got it through the penalty proved to be a little bit fortunate. I’d probably have given it, because there was contact; it was minimal. It went to VAR so what can you say? We got the rub of the green there and when (Kasper) Schmeichel saves the penalty from Harry Kane. If the ball had been a bit wider, he’d have pushed it round the post or away to safety."

  11. He's a brilliant man-manager'published at 13:32 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

    England 2-1 Denmark

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Here's more from former England international Trevor Steven, who praised Gareth Southgate for the way he has managed his players throughout the tournament.

“We’ve got a manager who has been in the role for four years; he’s been there and walked the walk as a player," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"The players relate to him. He is a terrific man-manager; players are not knocked off their perch if they are left out the team. Every player gets a chance, and if they don’t you feel they will get a chance next time. It is a brilliant psychological barn and everyone is sitting on it. There is no unrest and it is terrific."

On the final: “Toughest test, without a doubt. Spain were better than Italy in the semi. But Italy have a terrific unbeaten record, they play very differently to how we’ve seen Italians play in the past. We’re in the final, anyone can win a final and if we all step it up, we’ll win it.”

  12. 'It is a classic final'published at 13:22 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

    England 2-1 Denmark

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Here's more from Darren Anderton, who like many pundits this morning, admits England got a touch of fortune with their winner - though he says they deserved to win.

"I’ve seen Harry Kane take a lot of penalties watching Spurs, and I’m sure he won’t mind me saying that was one of his worst ones. We got that bit of luck our performance deserved; it is about time we got a little break like that," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"Italy seem to have a little bit more going forward (than in previous years). The two teams are pretty balanced out; there’s not going to be much in it.

"We’ve got so much quality in that final third, they’re the same with their front three, both are very good teams defensively. I’m sure it is going to be tight and tense; the first goal will be so important. It is a classic final, one that we’ve all been dreaming of, and I think it is going to be us lifting the trophy on Sunday night."

  13. 'His work-rate is phenomenal'published at 13:12 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

    England 2-1 Denmark

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Raheem Sterling's former PE teacher Dave Thorpe spoke to the BBC 5 Live Breakfast Show about the Manchester City winger after his performance at Wembley. He was less than committal when asked about the penalty but heaped praise on his attitude.

"The definitive thing about whether it is a penalty or not is whether the referee blows the whistle and points to the spot," he said. "That is all that matters."

"His work-rate was phenomenal; in the second half of extra time, he was still taking the ball and running at people and running past people. That is what I remember of him as an eight-year-old.

    “I wouldn’t like him in a penalty shoot-out maybe.”

My nephew told us before the tournament had even started that he'd had a dream that England reached the final, played Italy and lost 2-1. I should have put £1 on it - no idea what the odds would have been - but didn't think much of it or really believe it could happen. I really hope he's not some sort of clairvoyant or that he has got the score the wrong way around!

Italy v England (Sun, 20:00 BST)

What's that, you want MORE stats?

    Well, here you are:

    • Italy have never lost against England at a major tournament. First time for everything eh England?
    • The Three Lions have won just two of their last 14 meetings with Italy in all competitions and just have won just one of their eight competitive meetings.
    • In all competitions, Italy are unbeaten in their last 33 matches and England have won 15 of their last 17 at Wembley with the Three Lions unbeaten in their last 12 games.
    • This is the third major tournament (World Cup/Euros) final to be held at Wembley. The previous two were England v Germany in the 1966 World Cup, and Germany v Czech Republic in Euro 1996. Two out of three will not be bad England.

Italy v England (Sun, 20:00 BST)

So, England play Italy in the FINAL of Euro 2020 and if you were not aware of that then I'm not sure where you've been.

Anyway, fancy some stats ahead of Sunday?

    Let's do this then...

    • This is Italy’s 10th major tournament final. They won the European Championship in 1968 beating Yugoslavia in a replay, but have lost their subsequent two final appearances in the competition in 2000 and 2012.
    • You probably know this but we'll remind you of it again anyway. This will be England’s first ever appearance in a European Championship final and their first in the final of a major tournament since winning the 1966 World Cup.
    • What you might not be aware of is that this is the longest gap between major finals (World Cup/Euros) for any European nation, 55 years to be exact.
    • This will be the 11th instance of a European nation competing in a major tournament final as hosts.

I was extremely disappointed to hear people in the crowd booing the Danish National Anthem. This is simply a matter of respect. To disrespect another nation's anthem it to disrespect our own. National pride should only operate in the positive. If people did this, it would show a strength of resolve that would have much more impact on the opposition. Booing their anthem, simply fires them up.

  20. 'They were the better side'published at 12:25 British Summer Time 8 July 2021

    England 2-1 Denmark

Here's more from former England boss Sam Allardyce, who concedes England may have had a slice of luck - but they deserved their victory.

"They (England) were the better side, they created more chances, they found it difficult to get the winning goal, of course, and then in the end - as always in any football match, a little bit of luck sometimes - with the penalty where it came back to Harry (Kane) to finish it off," he told Good Morning Britain.

"We can all forget about that now, we're in the final. It was a great night for everybody in England and I think that the whole country celebrated. And the millions and millions that watched it are going to look forward to Sunday."
