Chelsea eased into the Carabao Cup final as they closed out a comfortable semi-final win over Tottenham.

Spurs never seriously threatened to overturn Chelsea's two-goal first-leg advantage and Antonio Rudiger's bundled finish from Mason Mount's corner after 18 minutes effectively confirmed a Wembley date with either Arsenal or Liverpool.

It was a night of frustration for Spurs and their former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte as they saw two penalties, awarded by referee Andre Marriner for fouls on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Lucas Moura, correctly overturned by VAR.

Harry Kane also saw a goal ruled out for offside in an improved second-half performance from Spurs but Chelsea always looked in control - and once they had extended their aggregate lead early on, they were able to control affairs without hitting their best form.

The game was paused late on following a medical emergency in the crowd and on resumption Chelsea completed the formalities of their victory.

  3. 'We need to play much better'published at 22:27 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2022

FT: Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea (0-3 on aggregate)

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel speaking to Sky Sports: "We started well, created big chances and were in the lead. But we played with fire; we allowed chances from sloppy mistakes and almost gave a penalty away because of overconfidence. The same happened in the second half, in the last 20, 25 minutes, a mixture of lack of focus, overconfidence. We needed luck to not give away another penalty, to have an offside VAR decision. We need to play better if we're going to really deserve results like this."

On unhappiness with the performance: "We have to meet the standards. It is why we work for Chelsea and play for Chelsea. Nothing else matters. It is not about just getting a result; we can play much better. We can close spaces much better, be better in defence, individually, control the match better and make fewer mistakes. In any aspect we can do better and we must do better."

On VAR denying Spurs: "I'm pretty sure we would've stepped up if they had scored. Every goal has a reaction; we were 3-0 up and there was no need to play with 85% or 90%, but I had the feeling we did. If a goal would have counted, there is enough quality there to stand up, we've done that before when we've conceded."

On Antonio Rudiger's future: "Everybody knows [the situation - he is out of contract at the end of the season], let's wait and see. Of course [we are confident of keeping him]. We have things to offer and he is the player he is in a Chelsea shirt and a Chelsea environment. He knows that very well."

Couldn't be a clearer message to Daniel Levy there from Antonio Conte. Sign me some better players in January.

  5. 'We have to be honest'published at 22:20 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2022

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea (0-3 on aggregate)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte, speaking to Sky Sports, says: "At the end of the two games Chelsea deserved to reach the final in this competition, we have to be honest.

"In the second half we created many chances to score and we deserved a result better than losing 1-0 but if you have a judgement over the two games Chelsea deserved to win."

On the game against Arsenal at the weekend: "We have to recover some players. When we lose one, two or three players we're in a bit of trouble."

Gut Man Dave: Why do people say it’s the same team that reached the CL final? No it isn’t. Entirely different defence, Dele is a changed player and Eriksen, the orchestrator of the team, is long gone. Completely different.

Rachel T: As a long-suffering Spurs fan I do appreciate that it was a long shot for Conte to come in and bag silverware within a few months. But some hope in the semi-final, or even a goal, would have been nice.

  9. 'It is important to lead by example'published at 22:06 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2022

FT: Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea (0-3 on aggregate)

    Chelsea

Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger speaking to Sky Sports: "In the home leg, we were in total control. They came back in the second half, like today, and they were more dangerous today because of our lack of focus."

On his goal: "I knew it my head! I was hoping it would go in, so it was good. I'm working on getting into better positions. Last time we played here, I scored, so it is good to help the team and it was the most important thing to lead by example."

On whether he thought his tackle on Hojbjerg would stand as a penalty: "You never know what could happen, but I was always confident. You can see the footage, he stepped on his own leg and went down. I was calm."

On whether he is at his best right now: "I am enjoying this chapter. I think it is the best time of my career."

On Man City this weekend: "There are a lot of tough games to play. The schedule is getting busier and busier. We have to be up for it."

  10. 'We lost concentration and focus'published at 22:01 Greenwich Mean Time 12 January 2022

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea (0-3 on aggregate)

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, said: "We're happy with the result. In the first half we were the better team and we deserved to be up.

"But we lost concentration and lost focus in the last 15 minutes of the first half and again in the second half. We were almost punished for lack of focus.

"We played at 90% and that's not our style - we shouldn't do this. We had to work hard and it was not our best performance - we were better in the first leg."

If you are honest, even before the goal, in terms of Chelsea's control, belief and arrogance [the tie was over]. When they don't have the ball, they are going to take it back. I see that in this team.

They've got players who will hunt it. They were so impressive without the ball, and when they had it, they had space because their formation played havoc with Spurs. It was a very comfortable semi final for Chelsea.

Job done for Chelsea. They have a Carabao Cup final at Wembley at the end of February against either Liverpool or Arsenal to look forward to.

A very underwhelming performance from Tottenham, who only had two shots on target in a match where they needed to attack.

Three VAR decisions went against them - two penalties were overturned and a goal disallowed, but on each occasion it was the right decision.

The night was a lot easier than Chelsea would've thought it would've been.

This will be the second time Thomas Tuchel, who has not even been in the Chelsea manager's job for a full 12 months, will have taken his side to Wembley.

They lost in the first one though, 1-0 to Leicester in the FA Cup final.

Two domestic cup finals and the small matter of winning the Champions League. What a year it has been for him and Chelsea.

We have eight minutes of injury time, but this game is just going through the motions now. Chelsea trying to keep the ball.

To those saying that Spurs are a poor team. It is largely the same personnel that got to a Champions League final. Two poor managers since Pochettino have knocked the stuffing out of them.

Will Tottenham qualify for the Champions League next season?

Tottenham are currently sixth in the Premier League, but only two points behind fourth-placed Arsenal, who have played twice more than Spurs have.

We asked if Tottenham would finish in the top four and qualify for next season's Champions League.

It is a very resounding verdict. More than 11,000 of you say no, they won't.

Kaeto Hernandez: Bringing on Oli Skipp is actually pointless. Great player, but won’t change the game. I would’ve preferred to see an attack-minded substitution made, Scarlett or even Dele coming on for the last 10 minutes.
