    FT: Newcastle 2-3 Tottenham

    Newcastle United

More from Steve Bruce speaking to Sky Sports: "We needed to give ourselves a chance, we huffed and puffed in the second half, tried to put pressure on them, but they always seemed to be comfortable.

"But we stuck with it and if we'd scored maybe 10 minutes earlier, who knows."

On his future at the club: "That's for other people to decide. If I was believing everything I saw last week, I might not have been here today.

"My job is to get a few results. Unfortunately this year, if you're a manager in the Premier League and you haven't won in seven or eight, you come under pressure.

"It's part of the deal of being in the Premier League. It's a big league for big boys and I'll crack on until I hear otherwise.

"Every football club needs clarity, from the top right the way through. The new owners have been very respectful. I can't say enough of them, the way they've gone about their business.

"It's up to me, in the near future anyway, to try and get better."

    On managing 1,000 games:

"I'd love to say it's been a lovely ride, it's been difficult, but I think I've been the circumstance for a lot of frustration for a lot of years.

"The people of Newcastle want to see the club moves forward. All I've ever wanted was to see this great club of ours move forward, but that's going to take a bit of time."

  3. 'Excuse the idiot'published at 19:51 British Summer Time 17 October 2021

    FT: Newcastle 2-3 Tottenham

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce tells BBC MOTD: "For a few times this season we have got off to a blistering start but unfortunately sat deep and did not do enough defensively fort that crucial period. A real good start put us on the front foot but we come away from it...

At this point, Bruce is interrupted by a loud heckler inside St James' Park: "Excuse the idiot," he says.

"We have to defend better, be a little better to watch but as soon as we open ourselves up we concede at the minute.

"Spurs did not have to do much to score, there lies the problem. It is a problem we have had for a while and we have to keep working on it.

"A difficult second half, we huffed and puffed but it was too easy for them. They are a very good side. The exploited a lot of times.

Asked if he will remain in the job: "That is for other people to decide. Ever since I have walked into this club of ours it is difficult. I knew how difficult was going to be with the frustrations. I will carry on as best I can until I hear otherwise. The owners have conducted themselves respectfully since they came in. As long as I hear otherwise, I will go into work tomorrow."

  4. 'I'll always back myself to score'published at 19:45 British Summer Time 17 October 2021

    FT: Newcastle 2-3 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs striker Harry Kane tells Sky Sports: "I know there's been a lot of talk and a lot of noise around me and I know that's always the case when you're used to scoring goals and the ball just doesn't drop to you sometimes.

"I'll always back myself to put the next chance away. Pierre (Emile Hojbjerg) put a good ball in and I was able to tuck it away.

"It's a shame I couldn't celebrate when it happened but VAR helped us out there.

"You play to the whistle. Stay focused in every moment, you never know with VAR, you need to play on."

  5. 'We're not defending well enough'published at 19:40 British Summer Time 17 October 2021

    FT: Newcastle 2-3 Tottenham

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce tells Sky Sports: "We were beaten by the better team after a wonderful start.

"Problems that we've had for a while now defensively were there for all to see unfortunately.

"We've started a few games like that, we've got off to a good start and scored, got our noses in front, unfortunately we're not able to defend well enough as a team.

"From front to back at the moment, we're not defending well enough. We've tried to change, to be more on the front-foot if that's the right word you say these days, but it's difficult because you get yourself having to score three goals to win a match."

On the medical emergency before half-time: "Everybody in the ground deserves credit. I hear the man is okay, thankfully, so it puts things in to perspective a little bit.

"It looks like good news, so I'm delighted for his family."

  6. 'We knew what was coming'published at 19:36 British Summer Time 17 October 2021

    FT: Newcastle 2-3 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo tells Sky Sports: "We handled today well, but we didn’t start it well. We knew what was coming, with everything going on around the Newcastle, in the end it was a positive performance .

"We stayed in the game, we kept it steady. The moment we started moving it around, we started causing them problems.

"For all of us it’s important that Harry Kane scores. We were really happy that he finally got the goal he deserved.

"It’s a long process, but today we made another step, we reacted to the goal we conceded, we’ve been able to improve.

The players need to play together, so I believe the more time we spend on the training ground, the improvement will come."

On the medical emergency in the first half: "It was instinctive, immediate, form Eric Dier and Sergio Reguilon, their reactions. We know that he is stable and that is good."

  7. 'The crowd was fantastic'published at 19:33 British Summer Time 17 October 2021

    FT: Newcastle 2-3 Tottenham

    Newcastle United

Newcastle forward Callum Wilson speaking to Sky Sports on the medical emergency before half time: "I think it was massive really, the crowd was fantastic, they alerted everyone.

"It was disturbing to see the guy like that, we wish him well and wish him a speedy recovery.

"You could here fans whistling, shouting, then we saw the space clear where this guy was receiving CPR and then you know how serious it is."

On the game: "It was a big occasion today, I think we started well, we were wining the ball back in good areas, but the we started taking backward steps, their left back got out a few times, then we were in retreat mode.

"It’s massive. We haven’t won this season yet. We’ve had some good performances but not the results to match it. I’ve been in this situation before, we have to dig in."

    FT: Newcastle 2-3 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs defender Sergio Reguilon tells Sky Sports: "I saw one guy lying down, I was very nervous, I went to the referee and said that we cannot play, stop the match.

"I looked at he fans, they were saying ‘stop, stop.’ I told the gaffer that someone in the crowd was lying down and to stop the game."

  10. Postpublished at 19:25 British Summer Time 17 October 2021

    FT: Newcastle 2-3 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo tells BBC MOTD: "It did not start very well, we expected Newcastle to come strong but reacted very well. Then they stopped because of the fan and I have the info that he is OK.

"We knew we had to ignore the noise and do our job. We did not start well but did an amazing job after. Really proud of them.

"I would like to score more, the boys also but Newcastle are a good team with good defenders.

"When the news come and (Covid) results come, it is big confusion but it was false positives. It was a disruption in preparation but we could adapt and the result is here.

"We have to focus on Thursday now, playing away from home with a lot of travelling and that requires and extra effort from us."

On Harry Kane's first Premier League goal: "It is good for us, good for Harry. What he does for us goes beyond the goals he scores for us."

  11. 'The fans feel it is a new era'published at 19:21 British Summer Time 17 October 2021

    FT: Newcastle 2-3 Tottenham

    Newcastle United

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson tells BBC MOTD: "Unreal start, great atmosphere. When you walked out you could feel it, you could feel the crowd was with you. We started great but things went downhill from there.

“You work hard through your rehab for moments like this There are difficult, gruelling moments and I tried to affect the game today.

“The fans feel it is a new era and something to build on. We want to keep the fans close, they spur you on like the 12th man at this place.

“I am glad the guy is OK and sending him our best wishes. It was stop start but you have to be ready for those moments."

  12. 'We composed ourselves really well'published at 19:17 British Summer Time 17 October 2021

    FT: Newcastle 2-3 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs striker Harry Kane tells Sky Sports: "Firstly we want to say best wishes to the guy in the stands, it was not a good sight to see. We hear that he might be stable now, so we’re thankful to the medical teams and the fans who were doing the CPR.

"Hopefully he’s OK and we wish him all the best from all the players at Tottenham.

"The game itself didn’t start great, we knew they were going to come out fast and they got their early goal. After that, we composed ourselves really well, created some good chances.

"The only disappointment is that we should have seen the game out, got the fourth, the fifth. We made it a bit more difficult at the end there."

We're very lucky that football has matured over the years and made sure that the right number of medics are present for everybody in the stadium. It was done very professionally. The specialists are here, the equipment is here.

We're hearing that they've managed to stabilise the individual - let's say the fan, it's almost certainly a Newcastle fan there.

The medics when they walked by here, it was good to see them getting a round of applause. They deserved it.

Can we all just take a moment to salute Sergio Reguilon. Yeah, he played well and all that, but his quick thinking to alert the referee and help get medical staff to the Newcastle supporter was superb.

That goes for Eric Dier too. Forget the own goal, his speed to suggest to the medical team that they needed a defibrillator was the only decision of his that matters today.

  15. 'More important for me is the fan'published at 19:06 British Summer Time 17 October 2021

    FT: Newcastle 2-3 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs full-back Sergio Reguilon tells BBC MOTD: "I think three points is always a moment of happiness but for me more important is the guy (the supporter who received medical treatment), they are telling me he is OK and stable.

"I saw the fans waving and I saw a guy lying down, I saw something wrong had happened. I looked at the gaffer and he stopped the match. I think now everything is OK and 100% happiness.

"It was very strange, we went to the dressing room and I was looking at the man lying down, I was nervous because I don't like to watch that."

  16. Game ends with 'chorus of boos'published at 18:58 British Summer Time 17 October 2021

    FT: Newcastle 2-3 Tottenham

    John Murray
    BBC 5 Live Football Correspondent

The game ends with a chorus of boos at St James' Park, after all of the euphoria over the course of the last week and a half, right until Callum Wilson put them ahead.

Steve Bruce heads down the tunnel at the end of his 1000th game in charge, that ended in defeat.

  17. Postpublished at 18:53 British Summer Time 17 October 2021

As for Spurs, that was arguably their best display of the season. They suffered an early blow but stayed calm, turned the game in their favour and dominated. But for Eric Doer's moment of madness, the scoreline would have properly reflected their superiority.

  18. Postpublished at 18:52 British Summer Time 17 October 2021

    FT: Newcastle 2-3 Tottenham

Newcastle have 11 games now before the January transfer window opens. The only significant change they can make is to go for a new manager. But whoever comes in will still have this set of players.

They remain without a win in the league this season. Things may get worse before they get better.

  19. Postpublished at 18:50 British Summer Time 17 October 2021

I think it is fair to say that 3-2 flatters Newcastle.

The chants from the crowd show the Newcastle fans have no class. It's clear he'll go anyway so why humiliate the man. How about some gratitude. No class. I'll be glad to see them drop.

Another tough day at the end of a tough week for Steve Bruce. I've nothing but pride and admiration for him. He absolutely oozes dignity.
