    Newcastle 2-3 Tottenham

The start of Newcastle's new era began with a roar but ends with boos as the final whistle goes.

They came driving out of the blocks, but were ultimately outclassed by Tottenham, who remain on the coattails of the league leaders.

Cristian Romero is off the pitch in agony. It came from a Matt Ritchie clumsy tackle. The ref checks it, but there's no card.

Time is up. Newcastle in last chance saloon.

  4. YELLOW CARDpublished at 90+3 mins

Joelinton into the book for a foul on Tanguy Ndombele. It may just cost his side the chance of one more attack.

  5. Postpublished at 90+2 mins

    Newcastle 2-3 Tottenham

We've had two minutes of added time. Spurs are keeping the ball. Winding down the game with zero risk.

  6. Postpublished at 90 mins

Now the home fans are interested, with four added minutes to go.

If they got something from this now it would be a whole pack of 'get out of jail free' cards played.

The line 'Newcastle look unlikely to score' still holds, because they didn't!

There was nobody near Eric Dier there but he just couldn't get his feet sorted, he tried to half-head, half-knee it and he got it all wrong.

    Now we hear the noise...

    Eric Dier own goal

    Where did this come from?!

Eric Dier has an absolute nightmare, stooping to meet a Jacob Murphy free-kick into the box and heading, unchallenged, into his own net.

Newcastle weren't going to score, so Tottenham have done it for them. It's given the home side a chance that looked utterly beyond them.

Three minutes of normal time left. I can't see anything but boos greeting the final whistle from the home fans.

I absolutely do not care if we're relegated if it brings real change and ambition. We've got a championship squad and it'll take time but it'll be worth it.

Not the finest cameo from Jonjo Shelvey. Booked 18 minutes, sent off after 24 minutes after coming on.

'You're getting sacked in the morning' chants now coming from all parts of the ground. Steve Bruce stands on the edge of his technical area, dejected but defiant.

  12. 'So stupid from Shelvey'published at 18:37 British Summer Time 17 October 2021

That is so stupid from Jonjo Shelvey. There is another defender between him and the keeper.

That is an absolutely guaranteed second yellow, yet he still does it.

That's really letting your manager, your team and these fans down to do that.

Steve Bruce is not even looking at him. He's absolutely gutted at the madness of that tackle, that is the daftest tackle I've seen in a long time.

Harry Kane takes the free-kick from the Jonjo Shelvey foul. He strikes it straight into the wall.

  14. RED CARD FOR NEWCASTLEpublished at 84 mins

    Newcastle 1-3 Tottenham

Wound, say hello to some salt.

Jonjo Shelvey, booked only a few minutes ago, is booked again and then sent off as he trips Sergio Reguilon, who had got goal side of him near the Newcastle box.

No complaints from Shelvey, who was a second-half sub.

More 'Bruce out' chants from the stands.

What started as a celebration is ending in mutiny.

Big shouts for a penalty against Eric Dier, who blocks a shot from the edge of the box. They all come from the home crowd, though.

The check on it doesn't take long. It came off Dier's head.

    More chants against Bruce.

That Callum Wilson-sparked delirium in the second minute feels a long time ago.

Lucas Moura fires a shot from range that whistles over the bar.

Meanwhile, a check for handball is going on. It is against Matt Ritchie, who stuck an arm up to deflect a cross from the right in the box prior to Moura's shot.

  19. 'Superb game management from Spurs'published at 18:31 British Summer Time 17 October 2021

    Newcastle 1-3 Tottenham

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

The game management's been superb from Spurs. They make sure that they're a danger on the break but they can hold the ball, too.

They've got a huge amount of games on, a lot of internationals to think about, a lot of travelling, you must save your legs. It's a long season and you'll get injured if you don't do it properly.

    They've controlled this game superbly.

  20. YELLOW CARDpublished at 79 mins

    Newcastle 1-3 Tottenham

It is so easy for Tottenham to just play their way out, despite the presence of many high-pressing Newcastle players.

Jonjo Shelvey is forced to foul a man, for which he is booked.

They are second best here by a country mile.
