  1. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 77 mins

    Newcastle 1-3 Tottenham

Steve Bruce turns to Ryan Fraser and Jacob Murphy. Callum Wilson and Joe Willock depart. Not sure if this is a genuine attempt to get back into the game or an admission of defeat and some rest for star players?

  2. Postpublished at 76 mins

    Newcastle 1-3 Tottenham

Tottenham continue to push for a fourth.

Two corners in succession put the pressure on, but Newcastle just about hang in there to clear.

So after 74 minutes, the first chants of "We want Brucey out."

Was starting to think the Newcastle manager might get away unscathed today. The song didn't last long.

If anyone can rescue something for Newcastle it is Alain Saint-Maximin.

He jinks inside and unleashes a shot, but way, way over the bar.

It is followed soon after by the first stadium-wide chants of 'we want Bruce out'. Well, the people they need to make that decision are here to hear it.

I don't think Newcastle fans thought it was going to happen overnight.

There was an incredible belief at the start of the game, but there is no belief and no unity in the team right now.

They look like a team near the bottom of the table and they should be there.

    It's not happening for Newcastle.

Callum Wilson has been isolated for much of this half but even when he gets on the ball he is surrounded and unable to make anything work.

Some real star displays from Spurs today. Son Heung-min you'd expect, but Sergio Reguilon and Tanguy Ndombele are right up there with him.

I assume Newcastle will throw the checkbook at the problem in January but who actually will want to sign? The big players the fans and owners crave won't want to join a mid session relegation battle and any other player joining will surely know they are just a sticky plaster until the summer.

    Newcastle 1-3 Tottenham

A combination of a Newcastle defensive header and a volleyed clearance gets the ball away from the corner.

Spurs come again, though, and Cristian Romero goes down in the box. It was an accidental tumble after he had taken the ball down. Definitely no penalty.

  10. Postpublished at 70 mins

    Newcastle 1-3 Tottenham

Tottenham nearly pick Newcastle open again, but a last-ditch sliding tackle prevents Harry Kane's pass into the box finding Tanguy Ndombele.

Spurs do have a corner, though.

They are a delight when they attack, Spurs. When they counter-attack like that, they are a fabulous-looking outfit.

The understanding they've got between those front players, every single one of them looks like they could make a chance.

If they keep doing that for the next 20 minutes, they'll get another goal.

  12. YELLOW CARDpublished at 69 mins

    Newcastle 1-3 Tottenham

Isaac Hayden gets the clearest yellow card going as he hauls down Lucas Moura to stop him breaking away.

The home fans are doing their best to urge the home players on. But it's more in desperate hope than expectation.

  14. Postpublished at 67 mins

The Newcastle players look spent. Maybe some of the emotion of the occasion, the rush of those first few minutes and the break before the end of the first-half are now taking their toll?

David: Spurs are in second gear and still far too good for a very very limited Newcastle side.

Neil: When the Newcastle goal went in I was like, here we go again; but since the first 15mins Spurs have looked like the Spurs of old.

"You're getting sacked in the morning" sing the Tottenham fans towards Steve Bruce as Newcastle struggle to get a foothold in the game.

They quickly follow it with "no noise from the Saudi boys".

Andy: Newcastle may have become a mega-rich club overnight, but becoming a good team is clearly going to take quite a bit longer.

  18. YELLOW CARDpublished at 65 mins

    Newcastle 1-3 Tottenham

Emerson is booked for holding back Alain Saint-Maximin. The referee allowed play to go on for an attack that led to nothing, before going back to show the yellow. Good refereeing.

  19. Postpublished at 63 mins

    Newcastle 1-3 Tottenham

Newcastle will undoubtedly have better afternoons than this on the pitch. They're offering nothing here now, though. Sleepwalking to defeat against a vastly superior side.

  20. 'The sucker-punch is there every time'published at 18:14 British Summer Time 17 October 2021

    Newcastle 1-3 Tottenham

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Any time Newcastle come forward, the sucker-punch is there every single time. Spurs break with such pace and they've got such technical players up there.

If you're Steve Bruce, you want to try and be positive and go forward, but if you're not careful, three could become four or even five.

Then you'd really ask the question of how long you'd be in the job.
