    Newcastle 1-3 Tottenham

To focus only on the game, it was a rollercoaster for the Newcastle fans, who came ready to begin a new era and got the perfect start after two mad minutes. But they've been second best since. Spurs roared back and are now in total control.

All that is secondary, though, to the health of the fan who required medical treatment and now, thankfully, appears to be stable.

The anger was completely unnecessary. The challenge on Emerson was fine and the referee waved play on. There's certainly no need for all the squaring up and shouting. There are bigger things to be worried about.

The crowd are slowly becoming more engaged with the game again now. The response was to the third goal was almost empathetic - understandable in the circumstances.

But the home team have responded well to the goal. They've also provoked the ire of Spurs by not putting the ball out with Emerson down.

    Couldn't miss.

The break in play has affected Newcastle far more than Tottenham. The visitors have been on the ball since the game resumed and they now have a cast-iron grip on it.

Harry Kane is found on the right of the box and his low ball provides a finish for Son Heung-min from just a few yards out.

The fans beside the individual at the time - they were very quick, they had the scarves up, waving them, they understood that this was an emergency. Everything moved very quickly then.

I think the applause we've just heard was for the individual of course, but also the medics. They were brilliant.

Darren: Superb from the Spurs players. Hope the fan is ok.

Azrael: Fingers crossed it is nothing too serious. Hope the person in the crowd proves to be okay.

Mtsherlock: Players checking in with Hojberg earlier is a great example of empathy.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was on the pitch when Christian Eriksen collapsed during Denmark's Euro 2020 game against Finland.

    An incredible situation here.

What was extraordinary was the part that fans and players played in alerting the medics. The players were lined up for a corner, but the sheer volume made by fans to get the players' and referees' attention quickly underlined how serious it was and brought the game to a halt.

I could see someone administering heart massage in the stand, and Eric Dier raced over to the bench to make sure a defibrillator was delivered as soon as possible.

The players will now come out to play the remaining seven minutes of the half.

It was the fans in the stands that attracted the attention of the referee and the players to what was happening.

Thousands of people in the stands were whistling and waving their arms and pointing, it was only then that the referee clocked that something was happening in the stands.

It was the players that then urgently called for the medical staff to come over.

If you're just joining us, a medical emergency involving what we understand to be a supporter has halted the game here at St James' Park with a few minutes left of the first-half.

The medical staff of both teams were called on to assist, with the referee taking the players off shortly after.

This is the right call. Referee Andre Marriner is sending the players inside with what we can only assume is a supporter receiving medical treatment.

Early on in the incident, Tottenham's Eric Dier was one of the first to get to the Tottenham bench and call upon the medical staff. He was making a chest pumping motion, which gives you a clue as to the severity of all this.

The game is still on pause, with both sets of players down by their respective benches. This is the quietest it has been in this ground for a good while. People are sensing the potential gravity of what is going on. We still don't know what exactly, but both medical teams were very quick to get over to the stand on the far side of the ground.

The right decision is made on the pitch. Play has stopped here. We've seen scenes similar to this only too recently in games of football. All we can do is hope for the best.
