Manchester United have opened discussions on a major redevelopment of Old Trafford that could see capacity increase to more than 80,000.

Significant improvement to the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand is expected.

Criticism of Old Trafford - England's biggest club ground at 74,140 - has grown in recent years, issues including leaks from the roof of the Charlton Stand.

The stadium as a whole has not had significant development since 2006.

  5. 'I don't know if Solskjaer has the answers'published at 16:13 British Summer Time 24 October 2021

    Bastian Schweinsteiger
Former Manchester United and Germany midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

I don't know if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has the answer. It is his first big job as a coach.

Personally I don't see a chemistry on the field at the moment and you need that to be successful in the long term. The consistency is lacking too.

I always compare Manchester United to the big teams like Bayern Munich. Before the game I can tell you that Bayern will win 4-0, 5-0 or 8-0. It is clear. They have a chemistry and structure on the field. It is coming - it doesn't matter if it is raining, sunny or snowing. It is difficult to say that about Manchester United at the moment.

Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo believes the Old Trafford side need time to adapt after an inconsistent start to the season.

United are sixth in the Premier League and five points off leaders Chelsea after collecting just one point from their last three top-flight games.

They host Liverpool on Sunday, with their rivals second on 18 points.

"We are in a moment in my opinion that Manchester [United] do a few changes," said 36-year-old Ronaldo.

"They buy me, they buy [Raphael] Varane and [Jadon] Sancho."

Khan: Konate at CB worries me. He’s only played 1 league game before and that was weeks ago at home. Would have preferred to see Gomez with his pace on big pitch. Also Mane has been terrific so should have been ahead of Jota and Firmino. Hard to argue with Klopp though

Plenty of chat around the arrival of those teams line-ups. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has made a big call by thrusting central defender Ibrahima Kounate into this one but it is a huge show of confidence in the £35m summer signing from RB Leipzig. Few would have also predicted the absence of Sadio Mane from the starting eleven.

As for Manchester United, it's back to the "McFred" midfield partnership of Fred and Scott McTominay in the hope the brakes on a Liverpool team that has been rampant on its travels this season.

Paul Pogba has the craziness of changing his hair every day and his earrings but I don't care. If I have a player that is able to bring me the biggest success in the world with the Champions League, World Cup, European Championships I need to give this player confidence. I need to make him important. that is what these sort of players need. Didier Deschamps manages to do this with the French national team.

  10. 'Staying at Liverpool not up to Salah'published at 16:05 British Summer Time 24 October 2021

Man Utd v Liverpool (16:30 BST)

    Nedum Onuoha
Former Manchester City defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

It is absolutely not up to Mo Salah if he wants to stay at Liverpool for the rest of his career. He can say he wants to stay, but when his contract starts to run down it is up to Liverpool to decide whether they want to keep him.

Players want to stay but some clubs think that players have moved on in terms of being an asset to them. It helps that he wants to stay, but to say it is inevitable because of how he's playing now goes against what football actually is.

Mohamed Salah says he wants to spend the rest of his career with Liverpool.

The 29-year-old Egypt forward has scored 137 goals in 214 games for the Reds since a £34m move from Roma in 2017, including 12 goals this season.

His current Liverpool deal runs out at the end of next season.

"It doesn't depend on me, but if you asked me I would love to stay until the last day of my football [career]. It's not in my hands, it depends on what the club wants," Salah told Sky Sports.

He added: "At the moment I can't see myself ever playing against Liverpool. It's hard, I don't want to talk about it, but it would make me really sad."

Cristiano Ronaldo's move back to Old Trafford made all the headlines this summer but he is being outshone by Mohamed Salah in the Premier League this season.

Salah has scored seven goals in eight games - including two goal-of-the-season contenders. He is joint top of the scorers list with Jamie Vardy - and joint second on assists with four.

Ronaldo, by contrast, has three goals and no assists in five games - fewer than the likes of Hwang Hee-chan, Ismaila Sarr, Callum Wilson and Neal Maupay.

In all competitions, the gap between Salah (12 goals) and Ronaldo (six goals) is starker.

Salah is known by Liverpool fans as the king - can he now prove he is the Premier League's top star?

I'm disappointed in Tottenham. They bored me a little bit if I'm honest.

They were slow. Where was the energy? I was like "come on, there is more from you". You can't wait to grow into games and they didn't test Lukasz Fabianski enough with the forward players that they've got. There wasn't enough energy.

No disrespect to Newcastle and Aston Villa but it is good getting results against them but these are the games you've got to stand up in if you have top-six aspirations.
