He's waving his team-mates forward but ends up going short, though this time the Gunners work it out smartly from the back.

Arsenal need to get a grip of this game before Liverpool find themselves out of sight.

Both players will need some treatment after that collision.

Mo Salah looks to twist and turn his way beyond Ainsley Maitland-Niles but the substitute does well to get a toe on the ball. It breaks to Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose effort is blocked but Liverpool keep it alive. Aaron Ramsdale is down well again to deny Salah, though I think the Reds forward was offside.

Thiago gallops clear after pickpocketing Takehiro Tomiyasu but Ben White is across to block the Liverpool midfielder's effort. It's far too casual from Arsenal at the back.

Mikel Arteta immediately makes a change.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles is on for Albert Sambi Lokonga.

The visitors give it away again! Trust the process and all that, but maybe give yourself a minute's breather at least. Mo Salah just can't work enough room to engineer a proper effort on goal and Aaron Ramsdale is on to it.

Arsenal keep giving it away in their own third and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain pounces this time, wriggling towards the edge of the box and squeezing an effort narrowly wide.

Arsenal try to play out from inside their own box and end up giving it away to Trent Alexander-Arnold, but the flying Liverpool right-back can't make anything of it.

Half a chance for Arsenal early in the second half as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looks to scoot in behind Virgil van Dijk, but the Liverpool defender does well to slide in and knock it away from the Gunners forward.

Manchester United

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea speaking to Match of the Day: "It was embarrassing - the way we played today. The first half was very poor - it's not acceptable for this club and the level of players that we have. It's another nightmare. There's been some difficulties but I don't really know what to say.

"I have been in difficult moments with this club but we are in a difficult situation - we don't know what to do with the ball, we are conceding a lot of goals. It's a horrible moment.

"It's easy to say the manager and staff but the ones who are on the pitch are the players and they're the ones who have to score goals and fight on the pitch. We need to look at ourselves one by one and give more for the club and the fans. It's difficult to say why there was a performance like this - I don't know what to say.

"I'm trying my best - it was good to save two penalties I thought okay come on now we can win this game. But then we started conceding chances and easy goals. It's very tough.

"It's hard to be in the dressing room now - we are sad, we are angry. Personally I'm hurt - it's a very difficult moment for the whole club."

Norwich City

Norwich City manager Dean Smith speaking to BBC Sport: "It feels really good [to be back]. It was a short break [between jobs]. I wasn't too happy with the first half - Southampton caused us big problems.

"Second half we engaged them further up the pitch and looked the better team. It was a soft goal we gave away. It was a great response, but even after that we dropped into a low block and invited a lot of pressure on us.

"Second half we engaged them higher up the pitch and were much better. It's important [to win] - the second half performance is the most important thing. The performance levels will give the lads a big lift. The players are certainly good enough."

Southampton

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl speaking to BBC Sport: "[Norwich's equaliser] for me is a clear foul [on Kyle Walker-Peters], but you can still defend it.

"Second half it is normal that the home team plays with a bit of emotion. They had one or two shots on target and we had much more in the first half. It's very, very hard to understand why we lost this game.

"It is not easy when a team is defending really deep. We tried to force a few mistakes. Theo [Walcott] had a big chance for the equaliser but he didn't make it. We didn't know what we would be facing today. Today it was enough to beat us."
