That result means England avoid Germany in the quarter-finals.

They will face either Spain or Denmark - who play each other on Saturday - at Brighton’s Amex Stadium in the last eight.

Germany play the runners-up in England’s group, which will be Austria or Norway. Again, those teams play each other on Friday for a place in the quarter-finals.

Germany have lost just one of their 20 group stage games at the Women’s Euros (W15 D4), doing so against Norway in 2013. This victory means they’ve progressed from all seven of their group stage participations in the competition.

    A machine.

I think Spain needed someone in the box, a proper striker who you know is going to be there.

One thing Spain really could do with solving is not conceding inside five minutes.

They have now conceded two of the three quickest goals from the start of a match at this year's Women's Euros (1st min v Finland, 3rd min v Germany).

They had only conceded within three minutes in one of their previous 12 matches at the tournament before 2022.

Not the kind of habit you want to pick up for what has been billed as your defining major tournament.

  7. 'Spain have to take this as a lesson'published at 22:07 British Summer Time 12 July 2022

    FT: Germany 2-0 Spain

    Vicky Losada
Manchester City midfielder on BBC Two

It was the perfect game from Germany.

It is really important in big tournaments to score.

Spain have to take this game as a lesson and do everything in the last game.

    Fara Williams
Former England midfielder on BBC Two

Germany are looking so complete at the moment. When they were under pressure they were able to go long and play direct.

Without the ball they were very good at high pressing and they were also comfortable sitting off and having a rest.

  9. 'Germany gave Spain nowhere to go'published at 21:58 British Summer Time 12 July 2022

    FT: Germany 2-0 Spain

    Lucy Ward
Former Leeds striker on BBC Two

The game plan worked absolutely perfectly .

The players were fully engaged with what Martina Voss-Tecklenburg wants them to do.

They gave Spain absolutely nowhere to go.

Germany actually scored with each of their two shots on target tonight. Now that is clinical.

Really professional performance by Germany. Tactically they played it to perfection. The way they went out and performed you've got to applaud them.

    A statement win from Germany.

The eight-time winners have put the talented young Spanish pretenders in their place.

  14. 'Spain have huffed and puffed'published at 21:48 British Summer Time 12 July 2022

    Germany 2-0 Spain

    Lucy Ward
Former Leeds striker on BBC Two

Spain have huffed and puffed and not got into the areas where they can hurt Germany.

Germany have kept them at arms-length in their defensive third.

  18. 'If I was cynical'published at 21:45 British Summer Time 12 July 2022

    Germany 2-0 Spain

    Lucy Ward
Former Leeds striker on BBC Two

If I was cynical, I would think a yellow card and missing the last group game is better than missing the quarter-final.

  19. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 88 mins

    Germany 2-0 Spain

Germany send on Jule Brand for Klara Buhl to see the game out.

Just a couple of minutes left.

  20. YELLOW CARDpublished at 87 mins

    Germany 2-0 Spain

That's a naughty late tackle. Lena Oberdorf flies in and picks up a yellow card. She'll now miss the next game - a very likely dead rubber against Finland.
