Mariona Caldentey did everything right but every time Spain have got in behind Merle Frohms has been absolutely brilliant.

Just before that chance, Spain took off Sheila and sent on forward Marta Cardona of Real Madrid and replaced Laia Alexandri with Athenea Del Castillo, also from Real.

Germany send on Linda Dallmann - a Bayern Munich midfielder - for Sara Dabritz.

Spain finally get in with a ball from deep finding the perfectly-timed run from Mariona Caldentey in the box. The Spain player meets the ball with a volley but it fails to find the target thanks to a blinder of a fingertip save from Merle Frohms.

Too often, Spain want just that fraction of a second too long on the ball. Even when they do nip ahead of a German player and set up a potential attack that slight delay in making a decision simply courts a tackle to come.

Irene Paredes gets her head to another corner but she's off balance at the back post and can only nod wide.

Another finely-timed tackle from Kathrin Hendrich stops Mariona Caldentey from getting into the box. The German defence has been superb.

As the sun goes down in London, time continues to tick away with Spain growing increasingly desperate.

They continue to look to open Germany up, but it's just not happening. They're going to have to try something different sooner rather than later.
