The final is the game where we say it's so so difficult to call. The teams are going to have to outwork each other. It's either going to be a lapse in concentration or one moment of magic that will separate the teams at the weekend.

Germany matchwinner Alexandra Popp: "I can't put it into words. We played an amazing game and threw everything in.

"We are incredibly happy; nobody expected us [to do it]. We're in the final at Wembley against England — it doesn't get any better than that.

"We earned our self-confidence in all the games. The team is just great; they have my back and are happy with me after my whole story of suffering [through injury]. Now it's time to regenerate quickly."

On the golden boot: "It's not my priority; my priority is to win the Euros. If I have the chance to crown the title with that achievement, it would be nice — but if it doesn't happen, then I'll still be happy."

France boss Corinne Diacre: "We saw that some of the French players were not at par with their normal level of fitness but we didn’t give up or throw in the towel. Maybe if we had an extra 48 hours [to rest] the game would’ve been different but I don’t think we should take this win away from Germany.

“We came up against a very strong and beautifully athletic team. The disappointment is quite heavy in the air right now and we need to stick together.

“Obviously disappointment is the overriding feeling right now because we have lost this match, but we have got foundations to build on and we just need a bit of time.

“This was not our night, maybe it was just not our competition this year.

“We are building something strong together, a hard-working group and a group that doesn’t like to lose.”

The gulf between England and Germany back then [in 2009, when Germany won 6-2 in the Euros final]. We were part-time, they were professional and ruthless. We have seen the game evolve on the continent since then. Teams have caught Germany up and are not afraid. They have a different feeling facing them. England go into the game respecting Germany but knowing they can open them up and Germany will be looking at England and thinking 'whoa, they can open us up'. There are so many threats.

Although Germany dominated most of the game, Merle Frohms was still called upon at times and made some really top saves. In the second half especially she made good decisions, she dropped in when she needed to. She made a big save from that Wendie Renard header. The footwork to get into that position was excellent. The mentality that she showed after the frustrating end to the first half was brilliant and she's going to be key for Germany if they go on to win this.

France's substitutions made a huge difference, especially Mateo. Going in to the game at Wembley, England playing Germany, you can play through them. If you are thinking of a Fran Kirby or Georgia Stanway playing those slick passes in through the midfield. When Mateo came on to the pitch France were creating more chances.

Alex Popp was waiting for her moment in this tournament. She wasn't even in the starting 11 in the opening game. It came down to an injury and a substitution. She came on, scored that third goal and took her chance. That is what players that are hungry do, that is what winners do and Popp is a winner.

As Freed From Desire from Gala blares out around Stadium MK, the Germany players can’t help but bounce along in celebration as they go on a slow lap of honour at securing yet another appearance in a European final.

Germany have won this tournament on eight of the 12 occasions it has been held. Only England can stop them from making it nine.

It will be a battle for the whole England back line. Germany's movement into the channels is so good that the whole defence is going to have to be on its game.

What is smart about Popp is that she knows if she stands next to Renard for the second goal she is not winning that header. She pulled herself away, waited for the space and timed her run to perfection to get a run on Renard. That is the only way you beat her in the air and she did it perfectly.

I can picture it right now, walking up Wembley Way. It is going to be amazing. The players are going to need the fans on Sunday because this Germany team are a difficult one to play against. I am sure Sarina Wiegman will have been sat in the hotel watching this game and considering her tactics and finding a way to beat this Germany side.
