  2. 'League position creates nervousness'published at 16:27 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2021

    Burnley

Burnley boss Sean Dyche for MOTD: "We didn’t play well at all in the first half. They’re a good outfit we know that.

"In the second half we tried to affect the game. I was a bit more pleased. We were on the front foot, had a bit more energy and we pressed better. There was a bit of nervousness today, a bit of anxiety. I thought the crowd were outstanding."

On nervousness: "The league table, they look at it, people keep telling you what’s happening and it affects you. But in the second half we calmed our performance down. We did what we want to try and do.

"A clean sheet against these is good. They’re in good form. Just the doggedness, we were way off with our performance in the first half.

"The defensive side of our game has been important every season in the Premier League, we’re actually not far away on that – it’s the attacking side, we’ve got to find more big moments."

  6. Everton aim to give Palace the winter bluespublished at 16:22 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2021

Crystal Palace v Everton (16:30 GMT)

    Chris Coughlin
    BBC Radio Merseyside

Only time will tell if Everton's dramatic late win over Arsenal was a turning point for the Blues' season after eight games without a win, but it's certainly improved the mood around Goodison Park.

Rafa Benitez's side showed great character to put the frustration of two disallowed goals behind them as Richarlison's header and Demarai Gray’s stoppage-time thunderbolt completed the turnaround and send the Evertonians wild.

It's crucial they follow that performance and result up at Selhurst Park against a Crystal Palace side who've hit a rough patch under Patrick Vieira.

The Eagles come into the game on a four-match winless run and having lost their past three, which is in stark contrast to their run just before that when they managed back-to-back 2-0 wins against Manchester City and Wolves.

It's surprising that Palace have only won three league games this season given their more exciting, attacking brand of football under Vieira, but the Blues will be hoping that remains the case come Sunday evening.

  7. 'I've not seen it back'published at 16:20 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2021

    FT: Leicester 4-0 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson on whether it was a penalty: "Yeah from where I was it didn't look like a penalty. When it's the referee and the VAR decision, you have to assume they have come to the right decision but I've not seen it back yet."

  8. 'It's not a penalty'published at 16:18 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2021

    FT: Leicester 4-0 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe speaking to MOTD: "I thought for all the ball we had around their box, we didn't really open them up, then in the big moments we didn't deal with them well enough.

"When you see [the penalty decision] live you fear the worst but when you see it in detail you see the player is going over before contact is made. For me, it's not a penalty. The goal came at a bad moment for us when we were on top. It's something we have to learn from."

On whether referees should look at VAR screen more: "Definitely. It's what it's there for. I don't understand why referees are so reluctant. I think if he does, he reverses the decision.

"I thought our response was pretty good and there was a lot of good play up to the final third but our decision-making in that last bit was off. It's down to cohesive team work that we haven't quite refined yet. There's still a lot of work to be done.

"The players won't have felt inferior. They will have felt competitive and hopefully they reflect in the right way. Every game is difficult. Obivously Anfield is a tough assignement for us [in the next game] but we will try everything to try and win the match."

Crystal Palace v Everton (16:30 GMT)

Crystal Palace are winless in their past 13 Premier League meetings with Everton (drawn seven, lost six) since a 3-2 away win in September 2014.

Everton are unbeaten in 10 Premier League away games against Crystal Palace (drawn five, lost five), since a 1-0 loss in October 1994. In their top-flight history, only against Preston (11 between 1897 and 1911) and Liverpool (15 between 1899 and 1914) have they had longer unbeaten away runs.

Crystal Palace v Everton (16:30 GMT)

    Mark Lawrenson
    BBC football expert

Everton got a great result against Arsenal on Monday, and the way they got it - so late on and with such a good strike - will have lifted the whole club.

Crystal Palace have taken only one point from their past four games, including three defeats in row.

But two of those losses came after they conceded late on, and even against Manchester United last week they missed a really good chance with the score at 0-0.

So the Eagles will be competitive, especially at home where they have only lost once under Patrick Vieira all season.

But I just don't see Everton boss Rafael Benitez taking many risks here, because it would be such a big backwards step to lose this game after that win over the Gunners.

Benitez will be absolutely determined not to be beaten, and I think he would take a draw now.

    Prediction: 1-1

  11. 'I am very pleased'published at 16:13 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2021

    FT: Leicester 4-0 Newcastle

    Leicester City

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers to Sky Sports: "Very pleased. Obviously with Jonny Evans going out early... When you see the young team and the experience they are gaining. To keep a clean sheet against very dangerous players, I am very pleased.

"That's very important and is typified in this team. The spirit and the team is great and they are unselfish. The first goal is brilliant in terms of our pressing that leads to the penalty. The others are really good team goals. Once we got our second goal the players got confidence and played to a good level.

"We have an unbelievable striker in Jamie Vardy but he is human so we have to look after him. Patson Daka is very important for us. He is a great goalscorer and he showed that.

"Youri Tielemans' all round game... To come back, play Thursday and today showed his quality. He was very impressive.

"When you come off the back of a disappointing result during the week, it's been a huge challenge. But we've always tried to develop a culture which supports players and gives others an opportunity. We discovered that mobility. I'm delighted for the players to get a clean sheet and score four goals.

"We can't talk so much about the [table]. We've shown over the last couple of years that we have a game that can give a problem to the big games. To be in eighth now with everyone we've gone through and with European football, I'm very proud of the players. There's still lots to improve on so we just need to get over this period now."

Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieiera: "The last four games, one point is not what we wanted, of course. We have to look at the way we performed in those games.

"Overall we lost some games that we deserved some points. The two games away from home I don’t think we created enough to win the game but I don't think that we deserved to lose them.

"It’s just about being consistent. When things are going well don't believe the hype. When things aren't going well, not hitting your head against the wall. The mood at the training ground is still the same."

Crystal Palace v Everton (16:30 GMT)

Crystal Palace are winless in the past 13 Premier League meetings.

Everton's run of 10 league games unbeaten at Selhurst Park is a tally bettered just twice at any away ground in their top-flight history: 11 matches at Preston between 1897 and 1911, and 15 at Liverpool between 1899 and 1914.

Palace's solitary Premier League win in 12 attempts at home to Everton came in 1994. They've scored six goals in total during that run.

  16. 'We can't just rely on Antonio to score'published at 16:05 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2021

    FT: Burnley 0-0 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham midfielder Declan Rice speaking to Sky Sports: "When I think about it, the chances we’ve had in the second half, getting into clear-cut positions to score goals and we didn’t quite get on the end of it or make the right decision, we probably should have come away with three points.

"When you come to a place like Burnley you always need to be secure out of possession. I felt like I needed to up the levels myself, I knew I could go a gear higher and when I started to up the space and drive past like I know I can do, I started to make things happen and become a bit more creative, I’m just disappointed we couldn’t get that goal."

On Michail Antonio: "I don’t think we can just rely on him to score all our goals. He scored so many at the start of the season. Yeah it’s dried up a bit but every striker goes through that patch, he’s still massively key for our team and the way that we play, but the goals need to start coming from other players as well including myself."

On Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope: "I think Pope is a top goalkeeper, I know from training with him at England. I should have told the lads before the game to put it hard and low, anything up top he’s probably one of the best in the world at saving them. He’s a top keeper and a great lad as well."

  17. 'We let the game slip away'published at 16:03 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2021

    FT: Leicester 4-0 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe to Sky Sports: "It was a strange game because I thought we were OK for large parts. We were ok in the first half and were a threat at times. We conceded a goal with the penalty - which was debatable whether it was. The scoreline looks like a heavy defeat but I didn't think it felt like that at all.

"It wasn't ideal for our situation. The manner of [the penalty] as well is one that the referee gives at the time and it's no way it will be overturned. It's harsh for us. The scoreline is not reflective. Statistics show us that and my gut feeling tells me that but we have to regroup very quickly.

"Every game is an opportunity. We're hugely frustrated by some of our moments in the game. If we'd have shown more composure in the attacking third we could have made more of the moments. We just let the game slip away from us.

"We know they have quality players and they hurt us when we allowed them space but I don't think we should lose heart from the majority of the game. We just need more of the big moments to go our way. We're in a huge fight to stay in this division. We'll need to use the pain and feeling from today to help us in our journey this season."

  19. 'Clean sheet is a good feeling'published at 15:59 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2021

    FT: Leicester 4-0 Newcastle

    Leicester City

Leicester midfielder James Maddison speaking to Sky Sports: "When you're in Europe you come up against teams who have a whole week to prepare. We got back on Thursday night, to sleep at 4am then back here again so it's tough to bounce back on tired legs, especially with a Covid-hit squad.

"That's what it's about. The most pleasing thing after getting an assist, a goal and a penalty is the clean sheet. We've talked about that a lot. To look at the scoreboard at the end and see a nil next to the opponent is a good feeling.

"I got fouled in the box. I wanted to take it to be honest but Youri [Tielemans] is back and he's good at penalties. He's a top player and a Belgian international. We missed him dearly. He's a top player and it's brilliant to have him back. He helps people like myself to do stuff at the top end of the pitch.

"[Patson Daka] is a brilliant, willing runner and very humble and selfless. You can tell how humble and happy he is. He's very unselfish like Jamie Vardy is. They are both natural goalscorers so brilliant to have in the team.

"I can't even imagine how angry Kasper [Schmeichel] would have been like in the changing room if one of his own team had ruined his clean sheet!

"The problem has been consistency. All of a sudden you get a good performance and three points and it puts you in the mix for the top six. But it's all about consistency in the Premier League. You can go back-to-back wins and you can be back up there. We're not naive, it's just about the conviction going forwards."
