  2. 'A joke of a decision' - pundits on not awarding Jota a penaltypublished at 19:28 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2021

    FT: Spurs 2-2 Liverpool

    Sky Sports

Jamie Carragher: "Yes, you cannot condone speaking to a referee but managers are emotional. We want managers to be honest and emotional and the decisions that go against Liverpool, it was a blatant penalty, Harry Kane should have been sent off.

"We were frustrated with VAR a year or two ago, we are OK with it at the moment but we have gone right the other way. Last season a touch on the ankle was a decision but now we are thinking what is the point of VAR with penalties? We saw that with Newcastle, it is not VAR, it is who controls it. Chris Kavanagh is VAR and that has to be a penalty.

"It might have happened 100 miles an hour but he whole point of VAR is to help the referee. This is the whole point of bringing VAR in. The clear and obvious is a real problem because the don't want to re-referee games. VAR helps referees on big situations and that was a big one."

Jamie Redknapp: "It is a horrendous decision, he just barges him. at least get some opinion from VAR. Look at the position of the referee, surely he can see that. How has he go the ball? It is such a bad decision. There is not a fan of football, ex-player who would say that is not a penalty. It is a joke of a decision."

    Spurs 2-2 Liverpool

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham forward Son Heung-min speaking to Sky Sports: “I think it was a special game. It was really intense and both sides were really strong.

“Sometimes you really feel the pressure but today I really enjoyed it. We have prepared this kind of thing for the last three to four days. We know Liverpool are really strong on the ball. Even for ourselves we used the ball well and created chances and the game plan was spot on.

“We had enough [chances] to finish the game and to be honest I feel really sorry for that because I had so many opportunities and had some bad touches or bad decisions.”

    Spurs 2-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to BBC Sport: “We played against a team where I had no idea who was available with pretty much no preparation possible and apart from [Pierre-Emile] Hojbjerg it was pretty much the side they would usually choose.

“We created enough chances but they set up 5-3-2 with those tow guys up front and their plan was to kick the ball behind the last line and let them run and that’s how they caused us problems.

“In the second half we felt the intensity more than the opponent. A point at Tottenham is fine. Let’s carry on.

On if Harry Kane should have been sent off: “I think we all agree it is a clear red card, I just need to ask two people, Mr Tierney and whoever was the VAR. You can give [Andrew] Robertson a red card, he knows that himself but Harry should not have been on the pitch in the second half and then tell me how the game goes. If Mr Tierney does not see it I get that. But the VAR was obviously awake because he told him to look again at Robertson.

“With the penalty he tells me he stopped on purpose because he wanted to be hit. The referee had the best position in the whole stadium.

"You don’t need a ref that helps you. You need a ref who is clear and objective. In three decisive decisions he was once right and that was with Robbo, and twice wrong. All three were against us."

  5. 'Reputation helps a lot' - pundits on Kane challengepublished at 19:18 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2021

    FT: Spurs 2-2 Liverpool

    Sky Sports

Jamie Carragher: "I don't understand the terminology used. VAR is talking about speed and intensity, Kane is sprinting and lunges in, that is nonsense."

Jamie Redknapp: "That is a red card. When you go in and use that amount of force, right now how the game is, he is out of control. if Robertson's foot is on the floor he snaps his leg. It is not intentional, he is not that type of player. Being England captain, reputation helps a lot."

  6. 'Alli played a good game'published at 19:17 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2021

    FT: Spurs 2-2 Liverpool

    Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs boss Antonio Conte to Sky: "I think it was an exciting game and we created many chances to score and win the game. We have to be a bit disappointed for the draw. For sure we played against a really strong team.

"For the chances we created, we go home with the thought instead of one point it could be three points.

"We prepared a plan. It’s not simple to defend against them. When we’re in possession I said we could create problems for Liverpool. This happened today. The supporters have seen a good exciting game.

"I don’t want to speak about the decision of the referee. I think the game was good for both teams. Harry played a good game. He scored a goal of vital importance. He had chances to score other goals. He’s an important player for us.

"Dele Alli played a good game. With this formation with three midfielders he can play as a midfielder and I think he’s strong physically. If he was a bit effective he could score but the performance was good. It’s important to understand about the players I can count now for the future. Also to find the right solution for formation. To have two possibilities is good for the team."

On the Premier League meeting tomorrow: "The people have to take the best decision for everybody. To be safe is the most important thing. If they decide to stop everything, if they decide to find different solutions and not close... I think we have to follow what they tell us."

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is also not happy about the fixture schedule: “We play now on Wednesday, Sunday and Tuesday. That is impossible. We do not have the players. We could maybe have another case or two. We have to think about it, we cannot just push it all through.

"First of all take away the second semi-final of the Carabao Cup. Just play once, wherever you play it I don’t care. The 26th and 28th of December is really not possible. We would prefer to play but we need some help. If we carry on we cannot carry on as usual.

"If we don’t play any more and have a break I am fine. But I know the problem. When do you want to play the games. It is not that easy to fit them in. We said before Coronavirus that it was a bit busy and now it gives us a proper punch."

  8. 'They are a point of reference for us'published at 19:11 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2021

    FT: Spurs 2-2 Liverpool

    Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs boss Antonio Conte to BBC Sport: "I think to take one point against Liverpool is good. We’re talking about one of the best teams in the world. They’ve created something special for all these years.

"To play against Liverpool is not easy. You have to be prepared to suffer. They want to tackle with eight players. We prepared our game to face eight against eight and to attack the space. We created many chances. In the second half there was more balance. An exciting game for the fans. A good point but if we want to improve our mentality we have to start to think we should be disappointed to only get one point.

"I haven’t seen the decision about Robertson or Harry. My staff say the second goal was not regular because of a handball but I haven’t seen anything. Tomorrow I’m more calm to watch the game. A good game and both teams played very good. They are a point of reference for us to work hard and try to be closer to them. It won’t be easy. Liverpool is one of the best teams in the world.

"For sure we enjoyed the game and the atmosphere was fantastic. It was easier for us to play after two weeks. We suffered a lot in that time because the government decided to close our training ground. We worked well with the players, they were safe. Tonight we had a good performance."

  10. 'He had the best spot on the pitch and doesn’t give it'published at 19:04 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2021

    Spurs 2-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

More from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: “It is always helpful when you play football yourself. When you see the situation back (Diogo Jota’s penalty appeal), the VAR is there. Why is he stopping? I don’t understand. The draw is fine. We are not crazy enough to think we cannot draw at Tottenham but these situations are crucial.

“I have no idea what his [referee Paul Tierney] problem is with me.

"I was a bit more emotional in the game but he gives me a yellow card but it is not allowed in a situation like this? He comes over and gives me a yellow card but I’d have preferred the right decisions on the pitch.

“We have our complete midfield out, the best centre half in the world… We lose our captain on matchday so you cannot expect to play the best football game of the season. You have to fight and that’s what the boys did.

"But just an objective ref who sees the situations and judges them. He told me he thinks he stops on purpose. It is incredible. He had the best spot on the pitch and doesn’t give it. You will have to ask him what his problem is with me."

  12. 'Not the smartest challenge from Robbo'published at 18:55 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2021

    FT: Spurs 2-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to Sky Sports: “I saw a big fight from my side. The first half was a good game from my team. The second half not exactly as good because we felt intensity of last few weeks and the opponent looked like they had finished warming up. They looked fresher.

"Scoring the second great. Conceding not so much.

"There were a lot of other things that were pretty influential to the game but some of these questions it is better to ask Mr Tierney."

On a red card for Harry Kane: “Yes definitely. You can give Robbo a red card. It is not the smartest challenge but that is definitely a red card. No doubt about it. His leg was in the air, it was pure coincidence. Harry cannot judge it. If Robbo’s leg is on the ground it is a broken leg.

"We have a VAR sitting there and he thinks have a look again at Robertson again. Fine that’s what he is there for. But what did he do in that situation? And then there is the penalty situation with Diogo Jota.

“Mr Tierney told me Diogo [Jota] stops on purpose because he wants the foul. First and foremost if you want to shoot you have to stop because you cannot do both."

Spurs striker Harry Kane to BBC Sport: "Overall we had the better chances and we're coming away a little disappointed we haven't won. Tough game. We reacted really well to going behind."

Was he worried he'd be sent off? "No. At the time I thought it was a good strong tackle. Maybe it looks a little worse when you slow it down. That's what VAR is there for.

"There are going to be strong tackles in a game like this. I wasn't worried. I was quite surprised [to be booked] to be honest."

It is one rule for Tottenham today and one rule for Liverpool.

I'm not sure how to feel. On one hand it's a fair result and Spurs missed a bunch of great chances with Alisson having a great game. On the other awful penalty (again) decisions and inconsistent VAR and cards.

    Regan, Bedford

Haitch: Yes Robertson should have been sent. Yes VAR were correct to ask the ref to review it. The level of consistency however is awful. Kane’s horror tackle not even reviewed by VAR at all. Consistency is key and it’s currently non existent.

Girish: Never moved an inch for the whole game. The Conte effect!! Spurs have a proper proper coach again.

Robin: Excellent game for a neutral tonight, unfortunately the officials have got three big decisions incorrect, which is such a shame really.

  20. 'Definitely not a red card'published at 18:39 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2021

    Spurs 2-2 Liverpool

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham forward Harry Kane speaking to Sky Sports: “It was a great game to be involved in and am sure it was a great game to watch as well. There were plenty of chances at both ends. We had some clear chances that we had to do better with to be honest. Overall it was a tough battle against a very good side. We move forward to the next one now.

“When we were 1-0 up we had two clear-cut chances. Sonny tried to take on the keeper and he made a great save from Dele’s. If we score both of those the game is clear. You’re playing against a top side and you have to take your chances and we had more than enough to win the game. Overall I thought it was a great performance.

“It was nice to score, it’s been a few games since I scored especially here at home in the Premier League but on another day there’s a couple more I could have taken."

On if he could have been given a red card: "No. Definitely not. It was a strong tackle but I thought I won the ball. Obviously I haven’t seen it back. When you are playing against top sides and fighting for points sometimes there’ll be strong tackles. They checked it and we move on.

"It didn’t feel like it and Andy [Robertson] on the pitch said, ‘you just caught my foot’. When you slow things down it makes it look a little worse than it is. That’s what VAR is there for."
