    Final Score at Vicarage Road

I was at St Mary’s a few days ago for Spurs’ 1-1 draw against 10-man Southampton, and this feels quite similar.

Tottenham are being allowed to control the game, but they’re lacking the ingenuity to crack Watford’s backline.

Credit to Claudio Ranieri’s team, they’ve defended very well. They’re just not offering a single dose of encouragement going the other way. Focus is very much on absorbing rather than attacking.

Not sure how that's not a penalty for Dier, thrown to the floor. Where is VAR? Madness

Ex-England captain on BBC Radio 5 Live

The job is half done for Watford. They've defended pretty well and got away with a few things as you have to against a top side like Tottenham. Tottenham will be very, very frustrated. Conte will get into them and tell them they need to pick better balls. If they score the first goal, they are going to score more.

  7. 'Frustration but pride'published at 15:56 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2022

    FT: Arsenal 1-2 Man City

    Arsenal

Arsenal assistant Albert Stuivenberg, speaking to BT Sport: "Very frustrating with the end result but also very proud of the players. When you end the game playing with 10 players against this City team and you don't concede a lot of chances, the overall performance is very good.

"Confusing is the right word [on the penalties]. We are looking for consistency. For me, the Odegaard penalty is clear penalty but if there is any consistency there the referee also comes to check. With the City penalty that happens, I think it is quite soft, but that happens. We took the game again after that as we had the chance to score with Martinelli. But then we get the red card.

"When you already have a yellow you need to control emotions and be smart. I am not sure why the first yellow is given to Gabriel. I hear a few different things. But you have to control emotions. It is something we need to learn.

"Mikel has the same feelings as me. He is frustrated after the performance and seeing the development of the team from the start of the season to now. Are we able to compete against one of the best teams in the world? And we were. We also showed guts and played the game we wanted in the first half. In the end it is frustrating to end with zero points."

How isn't their even a VAR check? Honestly transfers, sponsors, tv license deals, money and super leagues are most important in football...referee problems play second fiddle every year! Shocking!!!

  9. 'The people are tired'published at 15:54 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2022

    FT: Arsenal 1-2 Man City

    Manchester City

More from Pep Guardiola to BBC MOTD on the 5-0 win in the reverse game: "In that moment they had a lot of injuries and a red card for Granit Xhaka, people judge the results but managers have to make our views further. I know Mikel Arteta from the time we spent together, an extraordinary manager and the way they have been playing lately, Alexandre Lacazette at false nine, with the runners, that is Arsenal my friends.

"Just take a look at the history. To win here is a massive result. I played a thousand, millions time against Arsenal, with the best Barcelona ever, and we struggled. Now they have the momentum and they are back to where Arsenal was.

"Today in the right moments, especially with the second yellow card which Gabriel can avoid, the played aggressively. Today we were not ready because we were tired, it can happen. December is a terrible month, we finished two days ago, you see how they suffer against Brentford.

"The people are tired, you have to understand this, 1-1 was a good result but it was 2-1. Hopefully next time we play against Arsenal it can be better with energy in our levels and a better performance."

On Sunday's game between Chelsea and Liverpool: "We will take a look because now we have six days (until the next match) in the FA Cup then Chelsea. Hopefully the people can come back safe, use sanitisers, use the mask and can approach the game better than today. We are going to watch it, yes."

  10. 'I had a shower so didn't see'published at 15:53 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2022

    FT: Arsenal 1-2 Man City

    Manchester City

Man City boss Pep Guardiola to BBC MOTD: "They were better, they were the better team, we did not have energy. At the end, we played two games ago against Brentford, went back to Manchester and came back to London.

"Arsenal struggled in the last years to be in the top four and they started the season in the bottom but have moved up step-by-step. I felt the energy and connection between the players and we did not have the energy to compete with them.

"In football sometimes you try to analyse the reasons, what we have done, but it is unpredictable. 4-0 against Leicester, in 20 minutes, 4-3. Injuries, Covid and lot of games, these types of situations happen.

"Aaron (Ramsdale) was on the grass for a long time, that is why the extra-time was longer than should be. At the end, an incredible pass from Kevin de Bruyne and the fight from Rodri and we finished it. Arsenal is a team that is alive, aggressive in all areas and we knew it, today we could not compete with the same energy. They are human beings and sometimes it is not possible.

"Bernardo Silva's penalty... With Martin Odegaard, I took a shower and came here so did not see it [on the replay]."

Watford are defending bravely, but everyone is back. There is nobody in the wide areas and even the strikers are back. Going in [at half time] at 0-0 was their big target. They've done well.

Frustrating for Tottenham who haven't tested Daniel Bachmann anywhere near enough.
