    Aston Villa

Aston Villa's Tyrone Mings on Match of the Day: "This is a very proud club and they have obviously been going through a difficult patch, we knew the change of manager would give them a bit of inspiration and the only way they could hurt us really is if we let them play to the crowd's hand.

"The first half was pleasing, managing to diffuse that. It wasn't the greatest football game but was a pleasure to be here and win. They had to come out and try and win the game, we had to be aware the game was going to change, stand up to the challenge, show a different side to ourselves.

"We have played some excellent football and taken on board what the manager wants, but we have been a little bit soft and the only thng you can do is roll your sleeves up."

On Villa players being hit by a bottle: "They did and it was disgusting really, it is about all they have got... they tried to make it ugly, tried to make it an intimidating atmosphere and we came and got the three points. That will hopefully be dealt with but all you can do is get up and carry on."

"I am really excited, I love being a part of this club, love being captain, love everything this club stands for both on and off the pitch. I think we have made some brilliant signings, a fantastic squad. The club is going in the right direciton, we have stability, owners that want to take the club to the next level and players that want to push each other. It is a pleasure to be a part of."

Bringing through Anthony Elanga has been the only bright spot in what has been a really uninspiring tenure so far from Ralf Rangnick.

He has managed the situation pretty well. There has not been huge outbursts by players.

He is managing the likes of Anthony Martial, Edinson Cavani, Cristiano Ronaldo, but he has kept them on the bench and managed to bring Elanga through, which is really positive to see.

It’s refreshing to see Anthony Elanga come in.

He’s come in and grabbed his chance with both hands, scored a couple of goals and brought some real energy to the team.

Fair play to him, it’s nice to see him come in and stave off the competition from so many other great players.

  6. Eddie Howe's love for basketballpublished at 14:51 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2022

    Leeds v Newcastle (15:00 GMT

    Alistair Magowan
    BBC Sport at Elland Road

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is a fan of basketball, he counts legendary coach John Wooden as one of his inspirations, which might come in handy when facing Leeds today.

Marcelo Bielsa's side always entertain with what Howe describes as a "unique" brand of football. One-on-ones, man marking and full-court presses are no strangers to the Leeds team.

The biggest problem for Howe, though, will be Leeds' recent upturn in form. There has been almost nothing of the sort at Newcastle, who, if they lose this will start to wonder where their much-needed spark is coming from.

These so called fans have short memories. Bill saved us when Johnson was systematically destroying the club. Yes, we are dreadful but leave Bill alone and be careful what you wish for.

  10. Top four spot at stakepublished at 14:48 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2022

Man Utd v West Ham (15:00 GMT)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport at Old Trafford

It is pretty remarkable that West Ham have spent twice as much time in the Premier League's top four this season than Manchester United.

United have not been in one of those coveted Champions League places since they lost at Leicester on 16 October.

West Ham, on the other hand, have been there for 13 match-rounds so far this term.

Today, the hosts have the chance to leapfrog their visitors and go into fourth spot ahead of weekend fixtures involving Tottenham and Arsenal.

A West Ham win will take them five points clear of their opponents.

Despite Brentford's recent form, Thomas Frank was upbeat when I spoke to him pre-match - telling me he was proud of their performance against Manchester United and felt they looked a bit better defensively, despite conceding three.

Bruno Lage told me Fabio Silva "fully deserves his chance" as the teenager gets his first league start of the season in place of the injured Raul Jimenez, who has a calf problem.

  12. 'The graft was really there'published at 14:46 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2022

    FT: Everton 0-1 Aston Villa

    Everton

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford on BT Sport: "Set-pieces in games are crucial, every game you play, we need to work better on that as a unit.

"The fight, the tempo, we were solid at the back today, a set-piece did us. Second half we were much better. It was ufortunate to go in 1-0 down but we showed character and desire, just that finishing touch really.

"The character was second to none and the graft was really there. It'll come, we are working hard, work hard on the training pitch and then go out and express yourself, it wasn't to be today. But we were solid and resilient, they didn't create many chances."

  13. David Moyes' unenviable 'big six' recordpublished at 14:45 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2022

Man Utd v West Ham (15:00GMT)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport at Old Trafford

West Ham won in the EFL Cup at Old Trafford this season, so statistics can show many things.

However, David Moyes had not won in the last 44 Premier League away games where he has come up against one of English football's 'big six'.

The last success was for Everton, at Manchester City, in December 2010.

  15. Nervy times for the Toonpublished at 14:43 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2022

    Leeds v Newcastle (15:00 GMT)

Leeds sit 10 points above Newcastle in the table and should be safe from relegation but they will be keen to add further breathing space today.

Newcastle, meanwhile, need to get themselves out of the bottom three, especially after Norwich picked up a second successive victory over Watford last night.

Eddie Howe's side have two games in hand on Norwich and will move a point above them with victory over Leeds.

  16. 'Everton still look vulnerable at the back'published at 14:42 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2022

    FT: Everton 0-1 Aston Villa

    Rachel Brown-Finnis
    Ex-England goalkeeper on Final Score

Everton still look vulnerable at back. They are so easy to break down. They made three changes across the back four today but Villa looked the better side.

You look at what Steven Gerrard has done and how the players know what their roles are.

They are further down the road than Everton but you also look at their first XI and I would say man-for-man Villa have the better team.

  17. Battle for top fourpublished at 14:40 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2022

Man Utd v West Ham (15:00 GMT)

There's plenty at stake at Old Trafford this afternoon.

David Moyes returns with his West Ham side sitting in fourth - a place Manchester United hope to be sat in by the end of play.

United are currently two points below West Ham in seventh, but will leap straight up to fourth with a win. They also have a game in hand on the Hammers.

Tottenham and Arsenal are sandwiched between the two teams and have games in hand as well so the top four race is still in the balance.
