  1. Goodbye

So, it's on to Munich for England and a first meeting with Germany since knocking them out of Euro 2020.

Expect lots of changes from Gareth Southgate in the Allianz Arena on Tuesday.

    Thanks for your company.

There's more football to come in the shape of Italy-Germany which kicks-off in just a few moments.

Jump over here as my colleague Phil Dawkes takes you through that one.

    Until next time.

Handsome Nick: The only player who played like they deserved their place in the squad today was Jarrod Bowen. Everyone else looked like they would rather be on holiday. Germany will have watched this game ahead of Tuesday and they’ll be laughing.

  3. 'We did not do enough to win'

    FT: Hungary 1-0 England

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate on Channel 4: "We have to accept that we did not do enough to win the game, a draw would have been the fair outcome. We did not create too many clear-cut chances and the actual result hinged on a decision which is harsh but probably won't be overturned.

"Once it has been given as a penalty, he probably will not overturn it. You see challenges like that in the box, Reece James puts his body between the ball and the forward makes a meal of it. Away from home sometimes you will get those calls.

"It has been a long season. The heat was a factor and took a lot out of the players and we tried to refresh the team earlier than normal. The balance of finding out about new things and the consistency of the regular team, I have to look at whether I got that right.

"I don't want to be too harsh on them, these are games we need to learn from. They are bitterly disappointed because we want to keep winning matches. If we want to be a team right at the top tier of football, we need to come here and win."

On facing Germany on Tuesday: "We have to go and see how everybody has come through physically, there are players we tried to keep out of the game to refresh the team for Germany. That is now a bigger game. We want those challenges, we know we have a good team with some steps still to go and learned about some individual players and learned about different tactical challenges. I have to make sure I keep the players on track."

Kris Jefferson: People still question Southgate after he got us to a World Cup semi-final and a Euro final because of performances like this. I really hope he has a rethink of his 3/5 at the back, defensive tactics. Look at recent tournament winners, they don’t play defensively.

  5. 'I've no idea why people would boo gesture'

    FT: Hungary 1-0 England

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate on booing before kick-off: "The first thing, that (taking the knee) is why we do it, to try to educate people around the world. I have no idea why people would choose to boo the gesture. The young people can't know why they are doing it so they are being influenced by older adults.

"The Uefa decision is for other people to decide. We have made our stand as a team, everyone knows what we believe in and stand for, it is a night where I need to focus on the football."

Kyle Utterson: It was a poor game and a lack of quality from both sides. England were very poor, it felt like an end of season match with nothing on the line. A draw would have been fair. As poor as England were, that was not a penalty. A terrible decision from a poor referee.

  7. Post update

    FT: Hungary 1-0 England

    England

Gareth Southgate is asked about the booing when his players took the knee before kick-off: "We are trying to educate people around the world. I have no idea why people would choose to boo that gesture. We have made our stand as a team."

  8. Penalty was 'harsh' - Southgate

    FT: Hungary 1-0 England

    England

Gareth Southgate is being interviewed by Channel 4. He says the penalty that decided the game was "harsh".

"The heat was a factor. That took a lot out of the players," he adds. "I don't want to be too harsh on them. These are games we need to learn from."

  9. Post update

    FT: Hungary 1-0 England

    England

Gareth Southgate became the first England manager to give debuts to as many as three different West Ham players (Bowen, Rice, Cresswell) since Sven-Goran Eriksson in 2001 (Carrick, J. Cole, Sinclair).

  10. Get Involved

Carl Wills: What an awful performance, no tactical awareness. It kind of felt like a friendly no-one wanted to play in.

  11. 'We need to bounce back'

    FT: Hungary 1-0 England

More from England defender Conor Coady, speaking to Channel 4: "We've got a massive game coming up on Tuesday. We need to look at this performance and learn from it very quickly.

"I thought we started off quite well. We need to tidy up and bounce back. We need to look at how we performed and how we move forward because these are big games for us.

"We have lost and it's important we look at ourselves."

On the decision to award a penalty: "I think we were all a little bit shocked at first. It was one of those where no-one appealed for a penalty."

  12. 'Kane too wide and deep'

    FT: Hungary 1-0 England

    Matt Upson

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

There are always difficult questions after a loss, especially in a game many would think England should win. The result is important but it is more about the performance. It wasn't quite there, didn't have enough zip or cutting edge. That will be the hardest thing to take and explain as a manager.

It is about Harry Kane getting in danger areas. He played more central in that number nine role in the second half but in the first he was so wide and deep. If I'm a centre-back for Hungary I am delighted.

  13. 'Not something we want to hear'

    FT: Hungary 1-0 England

England defender Conor Coady, speaking to Channel 4 on the booing from the crowd when players took the knee: "It's massively disappointing. It's important people understand why we are doing it. It's not something we want to hear. We want to keep pushing the message."

  14. England's anti-racism gesture jeered

    FT: Hungary 1-0 England

A reminder that England's players were jeered when they took a knee before this match, despite most of the crowd in Budapest being children.

Channel 4, which is broadcasting the match in the UK, asked Uefa for a statement on the matter but were told by European football's governing body that it would not be making any comment.

I suspect we'll hear more about this.

    Read more here.

  15. 'England were slow'

    FT: Hungary 1-0 England

Michael Owen is part of Channel 4's team in Budapest. He labels England's performance as slow and says: "I'd like to see more of an identity from them."

  16. Post update

    FT: Hungary 1-0 England

    Hungary

Hungary registered their first win over England since May 1962 at the World Cup - eight years and 95 days before manager Gareth Southgate was even born.

  17. 'Hungary deserved to win'

    FT: Hungary 1-0 England

    Matt Upson

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

No complaints on the result from England I don't think. It is a thoroughly deserved win for Hungary. They were the better team in the second half. England showed promise early on but it was soon taken away from them. Hungary had the ability to break and be more cutting. That is the problem. They looked more likely top score. The goal is from a contentious penalty but they had the better chances and deserve the win.

  18. Post update

    FT: Hungary 1-0 England

    Where were the positives?

Jarrod Bowen put himself about and James Justin - another new boy - was bright before he was replaced at half-time after picking up a knock.

England do not have much time to get over this. They face Germany in Munich on Tuesday.

  19. FULL-TIME

    Hungary 1-0 England

All over. A memorable win for Hungary, a poor performance by England.

  20. Post update

    Hungary 1-0 England

    Desperate times for England.
