  7. Roberto Carlos to play Sunday Leaguepublished at 14:49 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

Here's a move we didn't expect to report today...

Former Brazil legend Roberto Carlos has agreed to turn out for a pub team in Shropshire in a Sunday League match.

The Bull In The Barne won the services of Carlos - now 48 - in a 'dream transfer raffle' on eBay meaning he will appear as a substitute at one of their Shrewsbury & District games in February.

Penny for the thoughts of the opposition keeper if they concede free-kick in shooting range.

Responding to comment at 14:27 - this is how every league title is won (Leicester aside). Chelsea, Man U, Arsenal, City, even Blackburn, they all bought it. NUFC fans deserve some silverware.

BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter

Neil Lennon is interested in the vacant managerial position at Sunderland.

The former Celtic boss would not be daunted by the challenge or indeed the pressure of working at the Stadium of Light.

Lennon is an admirer of the club and has a history of working at a big club with big expectations.

Sunderland yesterday sacked Lee Johnson as Head Coach after 14 months in charge.

Shame that Fulham seem to be perpetually under threat of losing their great academy products. Are we a genuinely ambitious and aspiring club in our own right, or just a feeder club? The system should provide better protection / deterrent, otherwise we have the European Super League in all but name.

  15. 'Missing out on Van de Beek a downer'published at 14:30 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

    Crystal Palace

Terence Ford, Back of the Nest Podcast

Everton hijacking Crystal Palace’s move for Donny van de Beek has put a downer on the transfer window for many. Especially when coupled with the news that Cheikhou Kouyate looks set to leave on a free transfer in the summer.

A signing would be the perfect way to overcome the blues, but that looks unlikely at his stage. Apart from Jean-Philippe Mateta potentially making his loan move permanent Patrick Vieira will have to make the most of what he has for the second half of the season.

This is by no means disastrous. When Kouyate and Conor Gallagher leave at the end of the season they will need replacing and the money we save in this window will help fund replacements.

I have no particular dislike of NUFC, but I have total disdain for the 'investors' who buy clubs, wear scarves for PR purposes and claim to be helping the local community. The problem with these sort of deals is that NUFC may well be declared the winners of the league/cup at some point, but everyone knows those titles were just bought for them by some rich people. The one thing they will NEVER get is any respect. If your neighbour wins the lottery and buys a fleet of Ferraris, you don't respect him for it; he just got lucky. It's same with NUFC.

  18. Toon or Hammers for Lingard?published at 14:20 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Newcastle and West Ham are interested in Jesse Lingard after Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick again told the England international he was free to leave the club if a suitable offer comes in.

So far, United have refused to budge over their demand for a £12m payment should Lingard’s loan to Newcastle result in the Magpies staying up.

United have also been reluctant to deal with West Ham, who they regard as a rival for a top four place.

It remains to be seen whether United will relax those demands to let Lingard leave.

  19. Auba deal nears?published at 14:19 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

    George Cummins
    BBC Radio 5 live

Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang has landed in Spain as he looks to secure a loan move Barcelona.

The forward landed at midday (CET) but at the moment it is unclear whether he will get his move to the Spanish side over the line.

With a top four finish at stake it represents a huge risk for Arsenal to leave Mikel Arteta with just Lacazette and Nketiah as his forwards for the remainder of the season.
