Bill: I agree that Man Utd’s treatment of Jesse Lingard is awful. It’s also bad for the England team. Shocking all round.

Andrew: I don't buy that Jesse Lingard is being treated badly by Man Utd. If he wants to sign for Newcastle and commit to a longer term then I'm sure Newcastle and Man Utd would agree a deal. Lingard wants his cake and to eat it. Play for six months and still have free transfer.

Dean: It might be seen as harsh on Lingard but the reality is what gain is there for Man Utd loaning him out? It's not like Henderson or Donny where if they do well you either get a form player back at the club or a higher transfer fee for the summer. Lingard's contract is expiring so we will lose a squad player for nothing in six months.

  2. Hope for Lingardpublished at 14:15 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

    Simon Stone

I did say 90 minutes ago or so, that hope was beginning to fade for Jesse Lingard to leave Manchester United.

    But hope still exists.

United interim boss Ralf Rangnick has told Lingard he can leave if the right deal materialises.

Newcastle and West Ham are still interested.

It needs United to drop their price.

This will go down well with Oxford fans. Midfielder Marcus Browne has returned to the club on a permanent deal from Middlesbrough.

He has previously had two loan spells with United.

AFC Bournemouth are expected to be busy today and they've moved to sign goalkeeper Freddie Woodman from Newcastle.

The shotstopper spent last season on loan at Bournemouth's Championship rivals Swansea, helping them to reach the play offs with 21 league clean sheets.

Manchester City director of football Txiki Begiristain: “Julian is a player we have monitored for some time. He is capable of operating in a number of attacking roles, and we firmly believe he's one of the best young attacking players in South America.

“I am so happy we have managed to bring him to Manchester City. I really believe we can provide him with the right conditions to fulfil his potential and become a top player.”

Duncan Ferguson stays on at Everton. This means he will now have worked under Martinez, Koeman, Allardyce, Silva, Ancelotti, Benitez and now Lampard.

Does this mean he is happy simply being a permanent staff member because he will not get the big job until he proves himself?

Alphonse: Maybe the dislike from some of us towards Newcastle is that we have realised the game went with Man City and we aren't keen to see history repeat itself?

David: Lampard is a likeable guy but I now fear for Everton. He need a good start or it’s them and Leeds, Norwich, Brentford, Newcastle and Burnley fighting it out for survival.

    No Watford David?

Designer stubble, just enough wax to keep the hair flicked up, first and second buttons of the shirt undone.

  14. 'Frank impressed us greatly'published at 13:39 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

    Everton

Everton majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri, on the appointment of Frank Lampard: “I am really delighted that Frank has joined us. He is an impressive young man and off the pitch. He has played at the very highest level of the game and has football in his blood. He impressed us all greatly during the thorough interview process and we’re all ready to give him all of our support as he looks to give the team an immediate boost.”

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright said: “Frank impressed us greatly throughout our process, coming across as a modern, ambitious and exciting young manager. He expressed a clear vision on how he wants to take the club forward and, importantly, a tremendous passion and genuine enthusiasm to join us. I’m sure Evertonians will give him the special welcome that only they can and will be looking forward to giving him and his coaching staff a warm Goodison welcome next weekend.”

  15. 'We have to do this together'published at 13:35 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

    Everton

New Everton manager Frank Lampard: “It is a huge honour for me to represent and manage a club the size and tradition of Everton Football Club. I’m very hungry to get started. After speaking to the owner, Chairman and the Board, I very much felt their passion and ambition. I hope they felt my ambition and how hard I want to work to bring it together.

“You can feel the passion Everton fans have for their club. That will be hugely important. As a team – the competitive level that the Premier League brings and the position we are in the table – we certainly need that. It’s a two-way thing. I think Everton is a unique club in that you can really understand what the fans want to see. The first thing they want is fight and desire and that must always be our baseline.

“My first message to the players will be that we have to do this together. We’ll try to do our job and I know the fans will be there backing us.”

Lampard's first game in charge will be on Saturday in the FA Cup against Brentford.

Man Utd's treatment of Jesse Lingard is disgusting with the amount of time he's spent at the club and what he's given to them. And they won't even let him out on loan for six months, instead choosing to leave him rotting away on their bench.

    Matt, London

Cannot understand the hate we are getting. What is wrong with Newcastle spending 100m? It's the Premier League. Man City spent that on bench warmers. How spiteful and jealous can you all be? If it was your club you would be saying nothing.

After completing his Everton medical, it’s time to prepare for Everton to announce the loan signing of Donny van de Beek, the Netherlands international who became a lost soul at Old Trafford.

Van de Beek never fell out of favour at United. He was never in favour, and that raises serious questions about the 2020 transfer.

When United make signings, they want everyone to know how much background research they’ve done, but why have we had so many misses in the transfer market over recent years?

I don’t think Van de Beek deserves the same share of the blame. He has not been given the opportunity to prove himself at United, in an already struggling midfield, but he has ultimately failed to impress two different managers now.

  19. Eriksen deal will 'open door to new tier of players'published at 13:16 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

    Brentford

The Christian Eriksen deal has been bubbling away for about a month but it was one of those that you don't really believe until it's actually done and he's through the door. It's really nice to get it done.

He's a huge player. Clearly he wanted a route back into football and we're growing into a really good home for Danish and Scandinavian footballers. It sounds like it's a great deal for both parties - we can reassess in the summer and see how it has gone.

We won't see the real impact of this deal for two or three years. It opens the door for people to look at Brentford differently - and invites in a whole new tier of players who previously weren't accessible. The club is so savvy in everything they do and are always thinking about what the future impact of a deal will be.

On the pitch, Brentford are looking a bit tired and the fizz from earlier in the season has worn off. We need someone to keep the ball for us and help us be better in possession.

In that sense, he could tick a lot of boxes.

West Ham are struggling to bring anyone in today.

They have been heavily linked with Benfica striker Darwin Nunez but the signs of a deal actually being done are not positive.

Hammers boss David Moyes is likely to be without Michail Antonio for Saturday's FA Cup fourth round tie at Kidderminster because he has a World Cup qualifier for Jamaica in the early hours of Thursday morning UK time.
